Answer Monday! (Part 3)

Wanted: Offensive coordinator.
Job description: Will not call plays.

Anyone interested?

Q: The Wizard of Troy said:
I saw how the USC basketball coaches tried to recruit Jackson Jeffcoat by sending a picture of the USC Song Girls with the caption "Enough Said" at the top. After he saw the picture, he signed with Texas! Do you see the comedy in that?

A: I would imagine after looking at that picture, Jeffcoat also thought, ``Enough Said!''

Q: BearBryant3 said:
Are there any surprise coaches that might be added to USC Staff or are they more likely going to be coaches from his Tennessee Staff?

A: I think we might see a surprise as I hear a couple NFL assistants were contacted for the offensive coordinator's job. But the sticking point, as I feel I've said ad nauseam, is that Lane Kiffin will call plays. And no self-respecting offensive coordinator will give up that duty.

Q: Chitown Trojan said:
Since you started covering the USC beat in 1996, which USC football player do you consider to have been the most polarizing figure?

A: Before the publicity explosion of the Pete Carroll era, I would R. Jay Soward, because there was always some drama surrounding him even though he was a extremely likable figure.
In the Carroll era, I think it has to be Matt Leinart. He was adored by the fans for most of his career but I think things gradually changed because of off-the-field behavior and today I hear a lot of pro-and-con comments about him from fans.

"off-field behavior" from Matt Leinart? Like what, sitting in a hot tub with coeds? Give me a break. True SC fans remember Matt for always coming up clutch when we needed him, not for his dalliances with cute coeds. Scooter's just jealous because he couldn't get Matt's leftovers.

The only thing Matt ever did that made me respect him less, was the way he handled his relationship with Brynn and his questionable early father instincts with Cole. But you can chalk that up to being young and immature. I'm sure he's learned from such mistakes. Besides, we all make mistakes. It's not like he shot himself in the groin while packing heat in the club, or got caught beating on his wife. There are far worse things other athletes have done, I'm pretty sure most of us are just fine with Matt. (present company excluded, of course)

Scott

you need to do your homework on the OC stuff.

David Shaw from Stanford, who is being rumored as the next SC OC, did not typically call the plays - I believe Harbaugh did

Chip Kelly at Oregon has an OC, but Kelly calls the plays

Its not unusual for a head coach to have an OC who doesn't call the plays

and maybe Kiffin would change his mind. Just because he had previously said he would call plays doesn't mean he will.

The problem with ML with fans was that he became too arrogant and talked about himself in the third person. He seems more humble now. As a QB he leaves no criticism.

Scott,

I found another for you: Sarkisian at Wash has an OC, but Sark calls the plays.

Here's a trivia question for Wolf: what do Wash, Ore and Stanford all have in common?

Answer: Each has a head coach who call the plays instead of the OC and yet somehow they all found a way to beat USC last year.

I remember Kiffin was the OC when SC's offense tore it up in 2005. Somehow I think they will be alright if he retains play-calling duties

i'm also hearing a lot of david shaw talk and if that goes through, there is no doubt in my mind that kiffin will have put together the best coaching staff in the nation. i love matt leinart and i always will, i hope he succeeds now that he has his second chance.

pdxtrojan...a source confirms you are right on about
David Shaw, the OC at Stanford about to join the Trojan staff. We will hear about it from Wolf sometime in the future.
