Just Say No

For several years now, USC's declined to participate in the women's basketball NIT. This seems odd year-after-year and even more so this season because with a young team that could use experience, a post-season tournament makes sense.
Not to mention that one of the reasons for building that nice, new arena on Figueroa is to actually stage events. But hey, what do I know?

SW, do you EVER look into a story before you run it? Do you know how much it costs to host that event? Are you willing to pay for it? Or are you just on the freeload?

Well, the team's been riddled with injuries for several years. Jackie Gamelos is finally playing, but Stephanie Gilbreath has yet to see the court.

An NIT title isn't much to play for, so maybe the thought in the program is it's better to rest and get healthy for next season. Some fans have pointed out, for example, that Ashley Corral tends to get pretty worn down as the season progresses. Perhaps the NIT experience isn't deemed worth it.

wow. cheatey really took the comPete mentality with him.

wah! "it costs too much"..."we're tired"..."the NIT is not good enough"...so many excuses to not comPete.

Well, perhaps the NIT isn't deemed much of a competition. USC isn't the type of school to, say, parade around an EagleBank Bowl trophy.

As for costs, that's what responsible folks unaccustomed to government handouts/subsidies concern themselves with. Gotta raise fees when the government money isn't coming in like it used to; you can ask the UC Regents about that.

I wish USC would explain why it did not participate in the Woman's NIT. Usually, it comes down to money, but an explanation, even a terse one, would be nice.

They say the first step to recovery is admitting that you "don't know". That a boy Wolfeee, you have taken your first step to reality. Fight On!

Wouldn't it be nice if someone who covers "Inside USC" could actually get to the bottom of this?

uscmike, you have some good posts, but why should SC explain anything to you or anybody? I can tell you that most boosters already know the answer. It's too fing expensive for what you're getting.

Perhaps you're right NOBS. USC doesn't need to state the obvious. But does it send the message that the woman's team is not worth it? The admin would allow the men's team to accept a NIT invitation, although that would generate more revenue to justify it. Alas, it is about the $$$.

but a lot of so called "Trojan fans" don't know much anyway as much as you guys like to post on this blog....

NOBS Author Profile Page said:

uscmike, you are right. But two additional thoughts: First, I personally wouldn't want the Men's team in the NIT either and secondly, in this economic enviornment, I wouldn't do much that didn't produce some revenue. Donations are DOWN.

Money is a total copout. They hosted the Pac-10 tournament with sparse crowds. Who says the Trojans have to host anyways. Go play on the road and show some desire to build this program back up to being a real competitor on the national scene. Believe Pepperdine is in the tournament being a private institution. Maybe Mike Garrett should donate some of his enormous unwarrented salary to pay for expenses.

Maybe YOU should donate "real" money so they can afford it. Dbag

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
