Former USC tackle Mario DaRe, the brother of actor Aldo Rey, has died at age 76. Da Re lettered in 1952-53-54.
The 1954 USC football media guide spelled Da Re (two words). The list of lettermen in the current guide has it one word. Here’s an excerpt from his 1954 bio:
“Performed as end in high shool but with no All-Star acclaim. Switched to tackle as eligible for varsity freshman, and spent season with Spartans. Got big break as soph when Bob Van Doren was unable to play in UCLA game because of concussion. Mario stepped in at defensive right tackle and performed in great fashion. After good early season play last year he injured knee and went at half speed for remainder of year. Quick charge, powerful and has desire to be outstanding tackle this season.”
