Here's a column on never reading a book where the main character roots for USC. Or the Yankees. Or Manchester United.
Remind me never to read another column written by someone arrogant enough to believe that he can judge people based on who they root for.
Perhaps this shines some light on Wolf's distain for his readship. ;)
Would that we had the dominant position and number of titles as Duke, Man U or the Yankees. Nevertheless, the more important question is who's ever even heard of Joe Queenan?
Nothing new, there were always those who resent winning programs like the Yankees and SC, always will be.
"Happily," says Queenan, "precious few novels mention...U.S.C." Unless you count what is one if the greatest American novels of the last 50 years, "A Fan's Notes," written by the late Fred Exley.
Add to that, nearly every single novel written by the best living sportswriter, Dan Jenkins.
I do, as my handle suggests, agree about Manyoo.
Chelsea FC-- EPL Champions (first to 100 goals) 2009 - 2010
Not too often I can say I feel dumber for having read something in the NYT.... but that did it.
Unless of course said book is specifically written about BEING a fan of a specific team and the struggles one goes through such as Nick Hornby's FEVER PITCH..
QueenMan wrote a curious (and pointless) article, and yes I too feel dumber for having read it, but I bet that if this Hemingway guy had left in a reference to USC, people might have thought he had talent. May have even won a Pulitzer or something in the future.
