The USC women's water polo team just defeated Stanford, 10-9, in the NCAA championship game. This is USC's second national title in water polo this school year.

Yep, that damn, stupid, dumb Mike Garrett. Hiring Yovan. What a dope MG is. Yep, just another NC for the Trojans with that lousy coach that Garrett hired.

FIGHT ON! MG and Yovan.

Great finish. Jovan Vavic has done a tremendous job with both the men and womens teams. Fight on!

Trojan Rewind Author Profile Page said:

It's Jovan, NOBS and how hard is it to win a national championship when only four schools have a legit shot to win every year?

What's Your Deal, trOJans?

When UCLA has won the Women's Water Polo title for the past five years you all say how it doesn't matter because only football is important. Then you guys actually win a Women's Water Polo title and suddenly you're all pounding your chests as if you've just ripped your shirts off like Ed O.

Comedy...pure comedy.

"you're all pounding your chests..."

Two people wrote congratulatory comments. Now although that's about as many paying season ticket holders the bruins average for football each year, it's not quite everybody.

But hey, Congrats to the Water Polo teams.

**rips shirt off Coach O. style**

Fight On!

Two paying season ticket holders takes me back to the Paul Hacket era...or looking fwd to the post-NCAA sanctions/Lane Kiffin era.

Cheat on! Agents, runners, steroids, liar coaches, too many coaches....the list of Southern Cal's lame-ness is simply too long.

UCLA ROB Author Profile Page said:

Wow! congratulations to the USC Trojans on winning the title, unfortunately this title will mean nothing to most of you because most of you've said it at one time or another "football is the only sport that matters" regardless, congratulations! Go Bruins!!

Oh these tender mercies...Southern Cal going nuts over a water polo champeenship.

whatsyourdeal: right on the mark. hypocrisy is just so Southern Cal!

i love to count! and i think the days to Southern Cal's sanction date is mere days away. 1...2...3...

@ UCLA ROB,

Exactly. Believe it or not, people like me don't care. Heck, USC even won some championships in Tennis and Golf in recent years and my reaction was, "We did? Oh, I guess that's nice." UCLA fans are the ones that go crazy over every little championship.

Trojan fans have a mentality similar to UT Austin fans. For example, UT Austin's Swimming and Diving program is a national powerhouse, but their fans only care about their "Big 3" sports. I don't think I've ever come across an UT fan bragging about their swimming/diving program. Rather, it's always Vince Young this, Colt McCoy that.

USC'87 Author Profile Page said:

Jovan was personally hired by John Williams, not Mike Garrett. Garrett has absolutely nothing to do with it and actually wanted to shut the water polo team down. If you were any kind of USC insider, you would know that.

Trojan Conquest Author Profile Page said:

What's impressive is that an expensive private school would win both men's and women's titles in water polo since there is a limited number of scholarships. Only 4 for the men's team and 8 for the women. I doubt that many are getting a full scholarship.

Nuggs: you validate a common stereotype of Southern Cal which is that it is a one-demensional (football) school. and that one dimension is about to be appropriately douched with sanctions

at UCLA we are proud of all of our athletes. of course, our legacy of athletes put every other school to shame. our hall of fame includes giants like Jackie Robinson, John Wooden, Lisa Fernandez, Jackie Joyner, Kareem Arthur Ashe & Rafer Johnson. Note this list comprises not just Hall of Famers, that list would be too long, this list is of society changing, trancedant athletes who are the best of the best their sport has seen and they impacted the world!

Southern Cal's most notable athlete? OJ Simpson.

discussion's over, thanks for playing! and congrats on the WWP title!!

About as many Bruin comments as Trojan ones, on a post about USC women's water polo. No wonder folks say Bruin fans care more about hating USC than loving UCLA.

Always nice when a team wins a national title, even in a sport that isn't very competitive. About 30 schools field D-1 women's water polo teams, almost half of them in CA. Doesn't mean the ladies didn't work their asses off. Definitely worthy of congratulations, but probably not something a school's general fanbase would brag about.

Like other non-revenue sports, women's water polo is a great opportunity for scholarships (though 6, I think, is the NCAA limit, so presumably lots of partials), easier admission into elite academic institutions, and a chance to represent your school. Congrats and thanks to the women of troy for representing.

NIBS - what were the scores of the three games from the UCLA/USC baseball series? I missed them in the paper. Who won?

Cheatthesystem Author Profile Page said:

I find it hilarious that despite the 105 NC's that UCLA has, year in and year out, USC wins the Gauntlet...how does that happen?

Congrats to the fighting Vavics!

By the way, why does Ucla use a former Trojan Football player to get their fans fired up for football games? Weird...

as far as your society changing athletes...I'll give you Jackie Robinson...a transfer student from PCC and Arthur Ashe...the others, not so much...and those two weren't necessarily famous for much at ucla...it was after.

How about Sam Cunningham? Does he count? But I suppose you'd have to know something about college football to appreciate that.

First off I'd like to remind everyone that UCLA lost to LMU.....LMU really??!

More importantly, this blog is a perfect example of what a sad state UCLA sports are in, I haver never and I would bet neither have the vast majority of USC fans bothered to go any UCLA blog for any purpose, not to mention to talk sh*t after they just won a national championship.

Stay classy UCLA, and please keep supporting USC blogs, glad we can provide some entertainment for you while pray for the second coming of John Wooden.

LMAO at anyone who thinks chicks polo isn't a sport worth following. Bet nobody here could last a quarter with those girls. Doesn't ever matter how many teams there are - winning titles is tough no matter the sport.

Trojan Conquest Author Profile Page said:

It's unbelieveable how many ucla troll haters there are here. The only times (maybe twice) I've been on the ucla blog is to see if there are as many Trojans making negative comments. Not even close.
You're sad and pathetic.

Oh sure 87, you know it all. Bet you don't give any money either. Just another big mouth that craps on MG. Yep, he's a dope. Just a dopey AD that happens to have the finest record for SC athletics EVER. Live with it.

NIBS - I need the scores of the 3-game series between UCLA and $UC this weekend. I know you know them.

To all you fat, lazy, Figueroa Tech flunkies I say this: go chase CALI Girl and the heffers up north.

Stay out of Beverly Hills and Santa Monica where all the hot chicks are.

No need to disparage LMU, though their relative success may be an indication of the overall lack of competition in D-1 women's water polo. But so what? These college athletes all bust their asses, and no one disputes that water polo is one of the more grueling sports out there.

Another point re LMU: USC men's basketball lost to them this past season. Sure, USC had only 5 guys after Kasey went down with what was ultimately a career-ending injury. But it was just LMU, right? (To be fair, they also beat Notre Dame.)

And I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, but Vavic is a UCLA grad, though I'm sure he now bleeds cardinal and gold. Sorry to interrupt the pissing contests.

Re MG, correlation /= causation. Some would argue USC has had success in spite of him.

NOBS, yes, USC athletics has done well during MG's tenure. Are there any specific accomplishments that are largely Garrett's? For example, Gross is often given credit for the PC hiring. What specific successes is Garrett generally given credit for? There's so much bad stuff written about him, it's almost refreshing to have someone defend him.

USC has also done well under Sample's tenure, but I'm more up to speed on the specific things he's spearheaded -- e.g., the Building on Excellence campaign and the Renaissance Scholars program. Unfortunately, when I think of Garrett, the Robinson, Gillespite, and Floyd departures are what come to mind.

The Wizard of Troy Author Profile Page said:

NOBS is not a USC insider or a close friend of Garrett's as he claims.

I called Garrett's office a while back and told them that someone was on this blog claiming to be personal friends with Garrett, while making comments about having sex with the young daughters of people who post, and also how he claimed to have had sex with Glena Carroll in another one of his "insider" posts.

So I was asked to send links to these posts by NOBS to the athletic department and the compliance office.

NOBS, as others have pointed out, is not an insider and Garrett's office knows all about him, while his actions/comments to the contrary are now closely monitored.

So, um, Fight On or something.

bRuin No nc, didn't have time to look at baseball as I was enjoying another SC national championship. No problem going up to the west side, too much traffic, too many rapes and I don't have a turban.

Trojan in Redondo Author Profile Page said:

Everything USC 87 said is accurate. Garrett was going to cut the water polo team and had made it clear that their funding would be gone. So John raised all the money himself, often with the help of his former players and people he did business with through his accountancy firm. John managed to raise enough money to save the USC water polo program by funding the scholarships himself without any support from Garrett or the athletic department. He also hired Jovan and handpicked him as his successor when John won the National Championship in 1998. Anyone who says one word otherwise does not have a clue what he is talking about.

"and I don't have a turban" - NOBS

Way to fight the stereotype that all SUC grads are narrow minded individuals. You're all class, NOBS.

Trojan Conquest Author Profile Page said:

This is really boring. Seriously, your school sucks is really boring. Yeah, ucla has only great smart people and USC has criminals. Come on, get a life.

Jon Author Profile Page said:

That "turban" comment is inappropriate, even on a Scott Wolf blog. It's still a dailynews.com blog, so it's not enough for Wolf to claim that he doesn't read comments and then wash his hands of the stuff that's written here.

What's the procedure for reporting offensive comments? I already tattled on Bruin NC in the open forum.

Thank you Jon. Bet you were the teacher's pet in 1st grade too. If there is a stereotype, it's because YOU are making it one. If SW wants to ban me, big deal. Like he says, just come back in another "body". wah wah.

JamesUSC99 Author Profile Page said:

I can confirm everything USC'87 and Trojan in Redondo have said to be accurate.

I had several friends on the 1998 squad that won the NC and the success if that team, including the fact that they were even able to have a USC waterpolo team, was due solely to the hard work of John Williams. Mike Garrett had nothing to do with the waterpolo team's success. If Williams had not raised the money for those scholarships himself and brought Jovan onboard, there would be no waterpolo team at USC if Mike Garrett had his way.

Doesn't matter anyway as word at alumni functions is that Nikias is planning some major changes soon at the athletic department and Garrett will announce his "retirement" in the near future.

NOBS Author Profile Page said:

Wiz, go take one. You know nothing. What's ur deal, look at the string of posts. You ahole from fucla start it and want to stop when you can't take it. If MG does retire, it will be on HIS own terms. Period.

NOBS...it appears as though WYD wants to keep trash talking, but doesn't want think your racial comments are appropriate. Looks like others agree with WYD.

Just saying.

Ghost of Charlie Bucket Author Profile Page said:

it is fully appropriate that Mike Garrett remain as AD when the NCAA hammer falls. then there will be no doubt that his termination is the result of his ineptitude and malfeasance.

when Garrett falls, the Southern Cal Axis of Evil will finally meet its final doom! this will usher in an era of peace and harmony in the Pac 10 that will last 100 years...and the wolf will lie with the oompa loompa!!

NOBS Author Profile Page said:

Rod, could care less what "others" think. Most that post on this board are not donors but big mouths that love to pop off about any negatives and are jealous that Garrett is pulling down $850+k a year while they flip burgers at McDonald's. You right though, the wiz loves to stir it up but can't take it.

1. You should really get one of the adults to proofread your statements before posting.

2. Wolf's post has absolutely nothing to do with anything UCLA related. It's about USC's women's water polo team beating Stanford and winning a Championship.

You. Are. Not. Smart.
