The USC women's water polo team just defeated Stanford, 10-9, in the NCAA championship game. This is USC's second national title in water polo this school year.

When UCLA has won the Women's Water Polo title for the past five years you all say how it doesn't matter because only football is important. Then you guys actually win a Women's Water Polo title and suddenly you're all pounding your chests as if you've just ripped your shirts off like Ed O.
Two people wrote congratulatory comments. Now although that's about as many paying season ticket holders the bruins average for football each year, it's not quite everybody.
Wow! congratulations to the USC Trojans on winning the title, unfortunately this title will mean nothing to most of you because most of you've said it at one time or another "football is the only sport that matters" regardless, congratulations! Go Bruins!!
Oh these tender mercies...Southern Cal going nuts over a water polo champeenship.
whatsyourdeal: right on the mark. hypocrisy is just so Southern Cal!
i love to count! and i think the days to Southern Cal's sanction date is mere days away. 1...2...3...

@ UCLA ROB,
Exactly. Believe it or not, people like me don't care. Heck, USC even won some championships in Tennis and Golf in recent years and my reaction was, "We did? Oh, I guess that's nice." UCLA fans are the ones that go crazy over every little championship.
Trojan fans have a mentality similar to UT Austin fans. For example, UT Austin's Swimming and Diving program is a national powerhouse, but their fans only care about their "Big 3" sports. I don't think I've ever come across an UT fan bragging about their swimming/diving program. Rather, it's always Vince Young this, Colt McCoy that.

Jovan was personally hired by John Williams, not Mike Garrett. Garrett has absolutely nothing to do with it and actually wanted to shut the water polo team down. If you were any kind of USC insider, you would know that.

What's impressive is that an expensive private school would win both men's and women's titles in water polo since there is a limited number of scholarships. Only 4 for the men's team and 8 for the women. I doubt that many are getting a full scholarship.
Nuggs: you validate a common stereotype of Southern Cal which is that it is a one-demensional (football) school. and that one dimension is about to be appropriately douched with sanctions
at UCLA we are proud of all of our athletes. of course, our legacy of athletes put every other school to shame. our hall of fame includes giants like Jackie Robinson, John Wooden, Lisa Fernandez, Jackie Joyner, Kareem Arthur Ashe & Rafer Johnson. Note this list comprises not just Hall of Famers, that list would be too long, this list is of society changing, trancedant athletes who are the best of the best their sport has seen and they impacted the world!
Southern Cal's most notable athlete? OJ Simpson.
discussion's over, thanks for playing! and congrats on the WWP title!!

About as many Bruin comments as Trojan ones, on a post about USC women's water polo. No wonder folks say Bruin fans care more about hating USC than loving UCLA.
Always nice when a team wins a national title, even in a sport that isn't very competitive. About 30 schools field D-1 women's water polo teams, almost half of them in CA. Doesn't mean the ladies didn't work their asses off. Definitely worthy of congratulations, but probably not something a school's general fanbase would brag about.
Like other non-revenue sports, women's water polo is a great opportunity for scholarships (though 6, I think, is the NCAA limit, so presumably lots of partials), easier admission into elite academic institutions, and a chance to represent your school. Congrats and thanks to the women of troy for representing.

Congrats to the fighting Vavics!
By the way, why does Ucla use a former Trojan Football player to get their fans fired up for football games? Weird...
as far as your society changing athletes...I'll give you Jackie Robinson...a transfer student from PCC and Arthur Ashe...the others, not so much...and those two weren't necessarily famous for much at ucla...it was after.
How about Sam Cunningham? Does he count? But I suppose you'd have to know something about college football to appreciate that.

Another point re LMU: USC men's basketball lost to them this past season. Sure, USC had only 5 guys after Kasey went down with what was ultimately a career-ending injury. But it was just LMU, right? (To be fair, they also beat Notre Dame.)
And I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, but Vavic is a UCLA grad, though I'm sure he now bleeds cardinal and gold. Sorry to interrupt the pissing contests.

Re MG, correlation /= causation. Some would argue USC has had success in spite of him.
NOBS, yes, USC athletics has done well during MG's tenure. Are there any specific accomplishments that are largely Garrett's? For example, Gross is often given credit for the PC hiring. What specific successes is Garrett generally given credit for? There's so much bad stuff written about him, it's almost refreshing to have someone defend him.
USC has also done well under Sample's tenure, but I'm more up to speed on the specific things he's spearheaded -- e.g., the Building on Excellence campaign and the Renaissance Scholars program. Unfortunately, when I think of Garrett, the Robinson, Gillespite, and Floyd departures are what come to mind.

So I was asked to send links to these posts by NOBS to the athletic department and the compliance office.

Everything USC 87 said is accurate. Garrett was going to cut the water polo team and had made it clear that their funding would be gone. So John raised all the money himself, often with the help of his former players and people he did business with through his accountancy firm. John managed to raise enough money to save the USC water polo program by funding the scholarships himself without any support from Garrett or the athletic department. He also hired Jovan and handpicked him as his successor when John won the National Championship in 1998. Anyone who says one word otherwise does not have a clue what he is talking about.

I had several friends on the 1998 squad that won the NC and the success if that team, including the fact that they were even able to have a USC waterpolo team, was due solely to the hard work of John Williams. Mike Garrett had nothing to do with the waterpolo team's success. If Williams had not raised the money for those scholarships himself and brought Jovan onboard, there would be no waterpolo team at USC if Mike Garrett had his way.
Doesn't matter anyway as word at alumni functions is that Nikias is planning some major changes soon at the athletic department and Garrett will announce his "retirement" in the near future.
