Carroll Response

Pete Carroll addressed the NCAA sanctions today.
Here's a key quote: ``The agenda of the NCAA infractions committee took them beyond the facts. And the facts don't match the sanctions.''

What does a fan gain from attending all those games under the sun?

One class of USC players moves on to the NFL, and another class arrives; but UCLA remains mired in mediocrity forever.

USC also rises in the polls, and USC goes down in the polls, and hurries to its place where it rises.

Kiffin goes toward the Raiders, and turns around to the Volunteers. He turns around continually as he goes, and Kiffin returns again to USC.

All the Beavers run into the Rose Bowl, yet the game is a let-down. To the place where the Beavers go, they may go again (even with Masoli dismissed).

The Bruin trolls’ comments are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing, Star Wars references and wolf noises.

That which has been is that which shall be; and that which has been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new football monopoly in Los Angeles.

Is there a thing of which it may be said, ‘Behold, this is new?’ It has been long ago, in the ages which were before us, that even UCLA produced a Heisman winner.

There is no memory of the former; neither shall there be any memory of the latter, even if they ever do come, among those that shall come after.

The NCAA applied its heart to seek and to search out by slow investigation concerning all that is done in the 90007. It is a heavy burden that Yahoo has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.

The NCAA has seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a chasing after wind. Players’ parents who are crooked can't be made straight; and a Heisman soon to be lacking can't be counted.

The NCAA said to the fans, “Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all the USC-haters who were before me. Yes, my investigation has had great experience of agents and runners. I applied my investigation to depose Bush, and to depose Carroll and Mayo. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind. For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge of what really goes on in collegiate athletics increases sorrow.”

At no point in the report (that I read) did it say Pete had knowledge of what was going on. Really, the emphasis seemed to be on the "assistant coach" (McNair) having knowledge of the relationship and keeping it from the NCAA. So if we take Pete at his word, this really did come as a shock to him because he believed there was no wrongdoing on the part of the program. Maybe Pete's a little too gullible. Maybe he trusted that his players wouldn't fall to the temptations of agents. I don't know.

I do know, that the NCAA Infractions Committee heard what they wanted to and believed who they wanted to. Any time you read something along the lines of "Lloyd Lake said it was true, Lloyd Lake's momma said it was true, and Lloyd Lake's exgirfriend said it was true - and no one proved otherwise" as a key piece of evidence, you know the jury's mind was made up before they heard the evidence.

SEE: "… But basically we said there are three people (agency partner A, the mother of agency partner A and a former girl friend of agency partner A) who claimed to have personal knowledge of this and there is no evidence to refute it.
The committee finds that the violation occurred."

How may lies can one man tell in 2 minutes? I am not even sure he knows he is lying. So effortless.

Only someone as dimwitted as Pete could think that claiming to have "no knowledge" of these documented Bush violations makes him look better.

In Pete world, student athletes pull up for practice in Range Rovers and no one bats an eye.

In Pete world, sanctions just happen to fly 10 minutes after you hit the back door.

USC football will never be the same. Not 1 hint of impropriety in 50 years and now this. Pete moves on and USC gets stuck with the cleanup. Good luck Seahawk fans - he's all yours.

Pete looked like he was reading it. He could care less.

Read on. Pete got TWO letters of reprimand. It's towards the end.

By the way Stackfire, the report says that Bush "pulled up for practice" in a nine year old Chevy. Not quite the smoking gun Range Rover you're looking for.

I don't understand how Paul Dee, the Chairman of the NCAA Infractions Committee can sleep at night. Consider that while he was AD at the Univ. of Miami, they committed the following:
1) $220K Pell grant fraud where players were paid through a Miami financial aid official in exchange for kickbacks (largest Pell Grant fraud in U.S. history)
2) players received an additional $400K in benefits, mainly from Miami insiders
3) failure to wholly implement a drug testing policy
4) allowing drug failed athletes to compete

What was Paul Dee's response? Self-imposed sanctions of 7 lost scholarships. The NCAA countered with an additional 24 lost scholarships and a 1-year post-season ban. How could this same Paul Dee impose a tougher sentence on USC when a) our school did not break the law, b) our players were not paid by insiders, c) our problems were not rampant despite what he and his committee want to convey? How is he the NCAA Infractions Committee chair?

I like Pete Carroll. I'm glad we have him here in Seattle. He's a great coach, a great motivator. However, I think he is a little disingenuous to suggest he had no knowledge of what was going on. There is a difference between being ignorant and keeping yourself ignorant to protect yourself and the program. The first is excusable, the second a lie by omission. Even IF Pete was somehow completely in the dark, McNair is still a coach on the team, and his infractions are what doomed the program. It is especially telling that he was retained by Kiffin (kept on to be kept quiet? Job for silence?). Bet he's let go, now, though. What a freaking liability. And please, let's not feel sorry for the kids and what the NCAA did to the present team...it's what Garrett did to the team that people should be crying about.

Sureshot, it was an IROC-Z to be exact. It had a street value of $8K when he bought it with an additional $8K in accessories...hardly something that would raise alarms especially on that campus.

Keep talking Pete. When will the Trojies learn that their hubris got them into this mess in the first place?

If i were a trOJie, I would be livid a-la Kiff at Cheatey's limp denials. What did he and Garrett do when all this came out? instead of dealing with it and self imposing some penalties several yrs ago, they decided to deny deny deny and not confront Reggie or McNair. McNair's involvement was known for years....but they decided to "pay him off" by letting him keep his job.

What a fraud. As i have said, I never wanted trOJies to be crippled by the sanctions, just humiliated for cheating and not admiting it. But Garrett and Petey left you guys hanging out to dry.

The bottom line: USC has had more national championships in football taken away by the NCAA, than UCLA has ever won, or will ever win. If the NCAA had done its job during the Wooden era and investigated Sam Gilbert with similar diligence, then UCLA would have received the death penalty for its athletic program, and all those basketball championship banners would be gathering dust in a closet someplace.

FIGHT ON!

haha... I love the part of Cafe's post where he talks about Lame "turning around" Tennessee. Remember, even they lost to UCLA last year, despite being far more talented. If that's turning a program around, I can't wait to see what the next few years hold for the trogans.

There is something Clintonesque about Caesar. At the same time, I want to believe him. He seems to know much more about Reggie's situation than he is leading on, as if there is some other side to it. Reading the report, I thought "extortion" at several points and wondered why Reggie never countered with that against Lake and company. That would have shut everything down in a heartbeat.

I also wonder about McNair. If Kiffin doesn't throw him straight under the bus and to the wolves simultaneously, he and the administration are essentially doubling down on a very, very risky bet. These are not stupid people. And McNair, if he doesn't quit before he gets canned (i.e. when Kiffin steps off a plane at LAX late tonight or tomorrow morning), well, he's just delusional. Unless all this crap was fabricated.

I guess the potential good is that the bandwagoners won't be clogging the parking lots on Saturdays for a couple years, and I can find reasonably priced seats closer to the 35 than the goal line on the press box side opposite the peristyle end.

I have read lots of idiotic comments on this blog, and people are entitled to hold their opinions no matter how stupid they are.

Pete Carroll was by and large a stand-up person, an asset to the community and a great coach while he was at USC. His words are accurate and there is no reason to doubt the truthfulness of his statement.

Shame on the NCAA. Fight on!

Spedjones, you completely misunderstand my post. On such a troubled day, I found myself turning to the Good Book for solace. And there at the beginning of Ecclesiastes was that passage I posted! It's amazing how it seems to be describing this very moment in time -- but then again, the Bible is a book of prophecy!

BruinGirl Author Profile Page said:

Carroll knew nothing about what was happening? Come on now. The NCAA report mentions him specifically TWICE! See pages 30-31 (re: Bush's "internship") and page 37 (the hiring of an extra coach in direct violation of NCAA rules). The NCAA also specifically says on page 55 "Student-athlete 1 (Bush) was employed by sports marketer A with the assistance, knowledge and approval of the institution." And for those talking about the letters of "reprimand" that Carroll got? The university sent them to him, not the NCAA. For the purposes of this report "Institution"=U$C.

Trojan Pete, you are also mistaken, it was an 1996 Impala that was completely pimped out with large tires and wheels that it was valued at $32,000...he pulled up to the campus on it on Monday morning, and prior to that he was driving a 1992 beat up toyota pick up. Everyone knew about the car...the Range Rover was driven by Joe McKnight, whom the coaches also knew about...the coaches turned the other way, it is just plain stupid, and irresponsible and it shows the arrogance of the program...they thought they were above the law...it serves them well, and I hope they learned the lessons of humility, along with their arrogant fans.

Free thinker is hilarious and quite frankly YOUR comment is idiotic and stupid thinking that Caesar is being stand up. Shame on the NCAA??? HAHAHAHAHAHA! Delusional doosh bag Trojan fan in denial is priceless. NOBS hit it on the head saying Caesar couldn't care less

TrojanPete Author Profile Page said:

BruinRob, you are right--it was an Impala. It was, according to Rivals, bought for $13K. It doesn't say how much he paid to "trick" it out. My point is that this seems excessive, especially given who is at the helm of the NCAA Infractions Committee and what he deemed was fair for his school's more serious violations. When looking at the violations here vs. the punishments handed out elsewhere, this seems far excessive.
