John Robinson Coaching Again

Jeez, SW, what time did the Pony Express arrive? That's over a month old news.

I was in school for Robinson's second stint at USC. Mike Garrett did not do right by him or the program. I recall after being asked mid-season if Robinson would be back the next year he responded something along the lines of "we don't make any decisions until the season is over."

That was just great for team morale, not to mention recruiting.

SW is a lazy, fat turd who spends his time surfing other blogs and websites for "inside" information on SC and thinking up "clever" insults in an effort to prove he's not a homer.

Papa you are full of crap. JR, whom I LOVE, was a dud and didn't have the fire. He should have been fired mid season. And to not answer MG's phone call is BS too. Both were at fault.

I'm not going to get over-defensive of John Robinson's 2nd term as coach. I do remember calling for his head after each Notre Dame and UCLA loss (and a number of times in-between). He tried to force the run and that dual QB mess was worse than the running-back-by-committee the team has tried the last few years.

But looking back I think he was a little shorted. Here's his first three years:

1993 - Tied for 1st in the Pac-10, #25 in the coaches poll, Freedom Bowl win (yeah I know, but it's a bowl game victory)
1994 - Tied for 2nd in the Pac-10, #15 in the coaches poll, #13 in the AP, Cotton Bowl win.
1995 - Tied for 1st in the Pac-10, #11 in the coaches poll, #12 in the AP, Rose Bowl WIn.

Than that terrible 5-5 season which is when the communication issue between the two started. Garrett made public comments like the one I mentioned before it had even ended, Robinson stopped taking calls - What order it happened is arbitrary. I agree, both were at fault. But still, one season away from a Rose Bowl win and he was already being pushed out the door.

After a second 5-5 bowl-less season and his removal was definitely justified.

I'm just saying the process started a year early and that there's a good chance it was done so because there was personal issues between the two men. Robinson was stubborn, his style was outdated and he needed to go after that second bad year. I'm just saying it was handled poorly by Garrett and the blame should have been shared - which it typically is not.
