Basketball Play-By-Play

Chris Fisher, a 25-year-old USC graduate, is the new basketball play-by-play announcer. Full release after the jump.

Chris Fisher, a 25-year-old USC graduate who has spent the past three years broadcasting minor league baseball and who also has called sporting events on USC's website and campus radio station, has been named the radio play-by-play announcer for USC men's basketball broadcasts on 710 ESPN Radio, Trojan athletic director Mike Garrett announced today (July 9).
Fisher succeeds the late Rory Markas, who died suddenly on Jan. 4 at age 54 during his 12th season of calling Trojan games.
"We had many qualified candidates willing to accept the difficult challenge of succeeding such a talented and beloved announcer as Rory," said Garrett. "In listening to Chris' work, many of us at USC heard something special in his play-calling ability. Now it's time for Trojan basketball fans everywhere to enjoy him. This is a great opportunity for a young professional like Chris, and we know he's more than ready and capable to come back home and run with it. He will do an outstanding job bringing Trojan basketball to our listeners."
Said Fisher: "I am thrilled and thankful to continue to be a part of the Trojan Family. However, the unfortunate circumstances of how this position opened up are not forgotten as Rory Markas was a tremendous mentor and an even better person to me. This has been a humbling process and I am appreciative that USC has put its conviction in me."
Fisher will team with longtime USC analyst Jim Hefner, a Trojan assistant coach in the 1960s and 1970s, in calling the action on 710 ESPN Radio.
Fisher is currently in his second season as the play-by-play broadcaster for the Eugene (Ore.) Emeralds, a minor league affiliate of the San Diego Padres in the short-season Class A Northwest League. He spent 2008 calling the play-by-play for the Potomac Nationals in Woodbridge, Va., an affiliate of the Washington Nationals. The Nationals won their division and league titles in the Class A Advanced Carolina League in 2008.
During the 2007 season, he conducted player and coach interviews during the USC men's basketball pre-game show on 710 ESPN Radio. He did the play-by-play for the USC women's basketball team last season on USCTrojans.com, USC's official athletic website.
Fisher, a native of Rohnert Park just north of the Bay Area, received his bachelor's degree in political science from USC in 2007. While at USC, he served as a sports announcer at student-run radio station KSCR, where he called Trojan football, baseball and men's and women's basketball games. He also called games and did feature reports on USCTrojans.com.

Good thing they're keeping Jim Hefner. What would we do without his insightful analysis? "The Trojans shot 23% in the first half. That's not very good. They need to make more shots in the 2nd half."

Thank God! Pete Arblowgast must be devistated losing the gig to a 25-year-old with little experience. And a native NoCal to boot. ROTFLMAO!!! Pete can go back to begging for people to help find him work on the USC message boards. I cant wait to see what Hoffarth will do with this. Now if Garrett would just replace Arblow on the football games, all will be right in the world.

USC '89 may be the only person I have ever heard complain about Pete Arbogast. And for the record, Pete didn't do Basketball games full-time. Only filled in when necessary.

Maybe you would like it more if we had UCLA's play by play guy? The guy who sounds like he just hit puberty 2 minutes ago, every time he opens his mouth.

Agree with USC'89 about Arbogast. When he had only football to broadcast after losing a pay job for 1540AM radio a few years back was asking for $200-300 to speak at a Trojan Coaches Club function which everyone else did for free. Have not heard this new guy talk, but anyone Garrett hires has a hurdle to overcome. Tell me you can't get someone more experienced than a 25 yr. old working minor league baseball with apparently no basketball background to be head announcer at the previously new fabulous Galen Center. This facility was supposed to attract the top recruits to USC, and that would seem to apply to broadcasters as well. Must have gotten this young man cheaply.

I do agree w/charlie bucket's mother on this one - the UCLA guy is horrible. I don't know who this 25-yr old is, but I'd take him straight-up for Chris Roberts, right now. But I'm willing to throw in cash if nudged slightly.

BTW, we all know this 25-yr old will be announcing to that rarest of species - the USC basketball fan. What a lonely job...

What do T5 and goo goo have in common? Both are cheap (all talk and no dough) and both are aholes. Make up your mind T5, I thought you said Garrett doesn't hire ANYBODY.

89, right on. Globe, you forgot to mention Hef also gives you the difference after the game too!
