Don't See Cal

Being around a die-hard Cal fan over the weekend made me wonder: With USC ineligible for post-season play, what excuse will Cal (and coach Jeff Tedford) have for underachieving this season?

Exactly! What a great article. Let me tell you. After 50+ of no Rose Bowl, no Heisman winner, no outright Pac 10 championships and no BCS presence, the Cal state fans are out of excuses. The problem is they became a media darling and received acclaim undeserving of their pathetic play. Tedford came along when pucla, UDub, ASU, Arizona, WSU and Stanford had received woeful levels of play. Those were 6 automatic wins right there. Beat two of Oregon, Oregon State and USC and you get second place in the conference.

The run is over. Now those same football players can have the joy of finishing 6th or 7th in the conference and graduate with Social Welfare degrees. Oh did I mention also that Tedford got the administration to lower the entrance standards for the football players and then railroaded them into "gimmee" degree programs?

He'll hyperventilate, fall face first unconscious into his desk, gash his head open and his assistants will give him a football helmet to wear before the big games.

BTW, this happened to him at Oregon while he was the OC.

In my opinion, if Cal had received anything close to consistent QB play over the last 6 years, they would have gone farther. Years of Ayoob, Longshore, and Riley have sunk a great run game and relatively good defensive play. Funny considering everyone hails Tedford as a QB developer. I don't see Brock Mansion (great name by the way) breaking the pattern.

Tedford's claim to fame was beating SC in 3OT in '03 and Then barely losing at the Colosseum in '04. Since then, he has done nothing.

I was just talking with my friends in the VBT (Venice Beach Trotskyites) Club about this very issue.

You see, in a capitalist society, private organizations like USC dominate and exploit the proletariat. Capitalism is exploitative, specifically in its process by which unpaid labor is extracted from the working class (the players). Such commodification of human labor creates an arrangement in which the burden of scoring touchdowns is socialized, while ownership of the benefits remains in the hands of the private institution.

Thus, the fundamental contradiction of capitalist society: without the elimination of the fetter of the private ownership of the means of production of touchdowns, UC football teams are unable to achieve further development.

In order to overcome the fetters of private ownership of college football, the working class must seize political power through a social revolution and place the touchdown-producing capacities of the best football players into collective ownership -- i.e., make them play for my beloved Cal Berkeley. Upon this, USC's dominance of the Pac-10 would be abolished and the material basis for all forms of inequality between teams within the conference would dissolve.

Viva la revolucion!

Someone up there tell us what the collective winning percentage for the all major sports teams is for the past five years...Cal/Stanford football, the 49ers, the Raiders, the A's, the Giants and the Warriors.
