Wolf,

I do not understand your hatred of Pete. At no time did the NCAA find that he did anything wrong. It was a player and his step-father, not Pete. So what is your problem? So what if he left USC, it is his option to leave a job if he wants to leave. He was with us for almost a decade. He brought so much joy to USC and did so much for the city often at personal risk to his safety. This sounds like LeBron and Cleveland. Really, let's appreciate all that he did. For him to have left because of possible sanctions is really ridicules as no one could have predicted what and why the NCAA did what they did. The facts were not there and their punishment in no way fit the crime.

SC football was in the dumps when Carroll came aboard, and he brought the school 2 national championships, almost a 3rd (in a row), and several other times were only a victory away from playing for still another national championship. That is John McKayish.

And so if SC now falls back into relative mediocrity (which means only beating ucla and notre dame half the time), so be it, the Trojans will rise again.

My only criticism is that picture of Carroll has been really air-brushed. Why not show his wrinkles, it would be more honest.

Reggie Bush receives benefits in exchange for possibly being represented by an agent in the future, and USC gets whacked. Jake Locker receives $ 300,000 from the Angels in exchange for possibly signing with them in the future (and hasn't played baseball in over 2 years) and this is considered an appropriate method of an athlete receiving their fair value in the marketplace? Perhaps next time, USC should funnel their payments thru Major League basball teams. Dennis Dixon at Oregon got a nice hunk of $$ too if I recall correctly. Maybe Pete should have paid Grants out of the Better LA Foundation :-)

the picture isn't the only thing airbrushed in this book.

Most promotional tours/activites are 'shameless' by their very nature. It think most reasonable people can understand these types of activities for what they are. Carroll is a motivator, and he uses words, slogans, and images to pursue his goals. Always has, always will.

However, it is baffling why a professional journalist, with the privileged assignment of covering one of the most storied programs in college sports, in one of the biggest media markets in the world, would continue to engage in the 'shameless' character assasination of a former head coach. Carroll accomplished some remarkable things during his tenure at USC, but ultimately he did not extert tight enough control over a population 20-year-old athletes who were subjected to corrupting influences. The question is...does Carroll deserve to be criticised for this, or crucified for this? There is little doubt that Scott's petty obsesssion goes far beyond that of legitimate and deserved criticism.

Scott, you and many of your media colleagues have lost all perspective, which is an inevitable consequence of disregarding balance in your reporting. Admittedly, USC did suboptimal job of monitering Bush. But...Pete Carroll was here for 9 years! During that time, USC had both a remarkable record of on-field success and far fewer off-field problems than most premier CFB programs. The big blemish, Reggie Bush, was an exceptional circumstance that happened to fall under the jurisdiction of a dysfunctional political organization, the NCAA, that is poorly designed to administer justice. The NCAA hammered USC to the cheers of the roaring majority, most of whom atually believe that USC going down will somehow make their miserable lives better. Faulty logic. Faulty justice.

In the grand scheme, I'd take 5 Reggie's for every player that assaults a police officer or commits felony theft. That's no excuse for Reggie. But the bigger problem is that many college-age male athletes, by their very nature and by our culture of sports worship, are making bad life choices. It's a difficult problem and one that every school faces. It deserves balanced media coverage. I don't believe demonizing a HC, who actually had an excellent record of keeping the vast majority of his kids in line over his 9 years at USC, is a balanced assessment of the HC or an honest appraisal of the challenging problems that threaten the CFB programs of today.

8-1 vs ND
8-1 vs ucla ...

Teams that played a brand of football envied nationwide!!! ...
I'd take the '05 team vs VY's Longhorns in 7 of 10 games ...

Pete is/was AWESOME!!! ...

And NO TROJAN would've NOT wanted him those 9 years - and DEFINITELY wouldn't have wanted him at our arch rivals ... perish the thought if were at ND, ucla, or any other pac-10 school this past 9 years ... YIKES!!!
NO THANKS!!!

FIGHT ON!!!

TruthBeTold...a little history lesson for you. You DID already lose 8 straight to UCLA and about 9 straight to ND w/o a win, right before your tainted run.

That's why Trogans like you were willing to look the other way - at any cost - to try to make sure that didn't happen again. And judging by your "Mike Garrett-like" response, the ends justified the means.

Cheat On! And enjoy the bowl season.

MGS,

Correct - we lost 8 straight; and actually more like 12 straight to ND ...

I didn't say 'look the other way' - I said Trojans and bRuins alike - wouldn't hesitate to claim PC as their Head Coach, period! ...

His accomplishments speak volumes ... and, while the embarrassment and disgrace of the sanctions were 'under his watch' ... anyone who knows a damn thing about college football - knows this was all due to 1 player/family - and not some rampant scheme by PC or any 'SC administration that broke rules - and had nothing to do w/ 'SC at all (unlike most infractions where it involves several athletes and academic fraud; athletes and boosters w/ 'fake' jobs, etc).

Any you KNOW the NCAA is the epitome of hipocrisy.

Every major college program has their share of 'knuckleheads' - to the degree of what those knuckleheads do (break rules or commit crimes or represent themselves and their university in unsavory or shameful manners) has and will continue forever.

You'd take PC over slick Rick ANY DAY ANY TIME ANY WHERE ...

Take the '05 season away (the true season that Reggie played football 'ineligibly' - and he knew he was trying to 'get away' with something - with this 'hook up'/family friend(s) down in SD ... and the PC era is still phenomenal.

By all accounts - Reggie was 'clean' until '05 ... so, if you took him off the '05 team ... it's questionable if the Trojans would've made it unscathed to the Title game ... perhaps a blemish somewhere during that season would've occurred ... who knows ...

FIGHT ON!!!
