Scoreboard, Baby

Next month will see the release of the book, ``Scoreboard, Baby,'' which is a deeper look at the Seattle Times' exhausive series two years ago on the University of Washington's last Rose Bowl team, which was coached by Rick Neuheisel under athletic director Barbara Hedges, who previously worked at USC.
The authors claim the book shows how a ``community's blind embrace of a football team compromised judges, prosecutors, police agencies, a proud university and the media.''
The first three chapters are available online here.

So Neuheisel said that if Washington lost its All-American tight end rapist "it would change who we are."

I am not going to "bruinize" this news as our little ucla buddies are wont to do.

But it underscores the pressure colleges are under to make money. And you make money by having winning players, a winning coach and thus a winning team.

And of course the alumni, subway-alumni, and friends of college football are complicitly involved, because they too are only interested in winning, entertaining football, the character of the football participants be damned.

Washington's legal troubles in 2000 looked like they were shot out of a cannon. It kind of makes SC's transgressions look as if they were shot out of a popgun

Scott, can we please have a "Scoreboard, Baby" button below each of Charlie Bucket's comments?

per someone else...

"He came in promising major success and even a takeover of a city, but up to this point, Rick Neuheisel has yet to live up to all of his self-created hype.

The Bruins are just 11-14 in the two years under Neuheisel’s watch, which is a far cry from the Pac-10 dominance that the coach implied upon getting the job.

UCLA only had one convincing win last season—a 43-7 trouncing over a one-win Washington State team. It needs more of those type of victories, only this season it needs to do it against higher quality opponents.

...

But If the Bruins come up short in a few of those contests, the chatter (getting fired) will start.

This is the year Rick has to back up all the big talk."

They called Slick Rick "Coach Kumbaya." Awesome.

UCLA football is every bit as significant as USC basketball. A lot of people paying attention because it is a major sport at a high profile school. But who really feels the bite in the end?

spedjones Author Profile Page said:

Old news. SC's the one under the worst NCAA sanctions in decades not UW or UCLA. Plus, UW took Josh Shirley just days after he was booted from UCLA for purse snatching. Didn't even wait to see if charges would be filed. That's all UW baby. Wonder if there are any allegations about UW coaches sending hookers to high schools...oh, wait, wrong coach.

oneillwatch Author Profile Page said:

So Sped admits that the sanctions on SC are out-of line with any NCAA precedent and have no relationship anything SC may have been guilty of (not spying on its players or their parents.) And that admission came from a Bruin. You know, the purer-than the driven snow school that hired a serial offender as its head football coach. After he was fired from UW.

I think you SUCster's are missing the irony regarding "blind embrace of a football team." Some of you, anyway.

UCLA Dynasty Author Profile Page said:

What's not mentioned was that Coach Neuheisel was directed by former USC AD Barbara Hedges to commit those illegal acts and when he threatened to expose her, she fired him with that made up gambling story. Same ol' SC.

I mean, Neuheisel did win his lawsuit for unlawful firing against UW, didn't he?

hey oregon--your school is no role model. great party school though. too bad that offense doesn't translate well to the NFL.

who will be the next ducks coach? maybe someone to get them over the top?

did you hear the rumor about ohio state stealing the ducks' signals in the rose bowl?

spedjones Author Profile Page said:

haha, way to put words in my mouth! I said none of that. All I said was that SC was hit hard. Every bit of it deserved.

sorry wolf, i cannot grant sweeeeeet scooop status on this one. i read the brief fragmented passages which seemed to focus on this bum jeremy stevens' alleged crime. but is does not document any wrongdoing by NeuHassle.

all i know about his time at UDub was that he whipped Hedges and the NCAA to the tune of $5million for wrongfull termination by Hedges and unjust persecution by the NCAA. that speaks volumes about his innocence.

wolf, i try to stay out of other schools' business, so this does not interest me.

laugh factory alert!!!--the bruins are learning an offense from the univeristy of nevada. that's embarrasing. poor neu-weasel doesn't have the confidence in his own coaching intelligence. he'll try to spin it, but it will come out all wrong.

who will be the bruins next coach?

BruWin Author Profile Page said:

scinsc5, all you need to do is listen to Kiffin talk, to know the lights are but nobody's home. There is no dumber coach than Kiffin. How much do you want to bet that USuCk does not go to a Bowl game this year? LOL
