Bush Forfeits Heisman

Good grief Reggie. Isn't there anyone in that Kardashian family who remember how silly it sounded when OJ was going to dedicate his life to finding the real killers? Bruce Jenner, maybe?

It's about time but his reasons are garbage and incomplete. Can't this clown just come clean once and for all? His statement should have said: "My family and I didn't care about the University and decided to take extra benefits. We then decided to stiff the wannabe agent and we were exposed. For getting caught, I apologize...maybe."

Nice to hear Vince Young will accept sloppy seconds. Too bad for him the Heisman Trust won't give it to him.

Wonder if this would have played out the same way if Reggie had gone to Notre Dame like he was originally planning to?

Recently aaw an ESPN Classic game where they interviewed his Mom/Stepdad....Stepdad said that USC wasn't even in Reggie's sights until Stepdad suggested he go there. Makes one wonder if there is alot more that went on than has been disclosed.

Young wasn't Young until the Rose Bowl game which was after the Heisman was awarded. Matt would have received a lot of Reggie votes.

Great. NOW he decides to roll over. Why didn't he roll over 4 years ago when he could have paid Lloyd Lake (like he paid Michael Michaels) and avoided this whole mess for USC in the first place?

Bush is persona non grata at his alma mater.

I am reminded of the scene in Oliver Stone's film "Nixon" in which Nixon complains that America hates him because when America looks at him, America sees itself as it really is.

I am reminded also of the ancient Hebrew ritual of banishing the so-called "scapegoat" into the wilderness, bearing with it the sins of the community.

Reggie Bush was not innocent, but a true list of all the improper benefits accepted by the many Heisman winners over the years would probably shock even the most cynical fan. Deep down, everyone knows this. Deep down, fans of mediocre programs know that their teams fail to win DESPITE their secret cheating, not because of an honest refusal to cheat.

Deep down, everyone knows that if their program could buy a Reggie Bush, it would be money well spent -- as long as the young man was not too stupid and/or arrogant to throw some hush money at the right person at the right time.

This is why so much invective has been thrown at Reggie Bush. He is a boogey-man for the fear that we are all suckers who spend time and money rooting for players in a crooked sport. If Bush and USC are the bad guys, then the bad guys have now been punished, and the sport is fair again, so it's safe for us all to keep giving our money and our attention to college football.

On a related topic, when the NCAA sanctioned USC with a redistribution of USC's wealth of football players to other schools, they should have used some kind of eminent domain power to take Mitch Mustain from USC and give him to UCLA. That might have helped to level the playing field, so to speak.

Well, if it's inevitable (and it was) I guess this is his only play to try to salvage something of this mess. Problem is he should have done that long about before he put a giant "*" next to everything at USC.

Finally, Bush did something right. Now we await the apology to the university and its fans... (dead silence)... okay, while we wait, lemme just say this... the award should remain vacated. The vote was a landslide in Bush's favor and Young used the slight as motivation for the NC game. Who knows what would have happened had Bush been found ineligible back then. Let it go and move on. And stop sobbing for the cameras, Mack.

He is indeed human, yet we put him on a pedestal due to his athletic ability and celebrity figure. Many of us would also do what he did. However, many of us CANNOT do what he did on the field. And for that, he'll forever be remembered for those truly amazing perfomances on the field.

Losing the Heisman Trophy doesn't erase the famous picture of him leaping over that wimpy UCLA defender, his 500+ yard game against Fresno State, or pushing Leinart into the endzone at Notre Dame.

You made a mistake Reggie. And you made it worse over time. But regardless, you helped put USC back atop the college football world.
