Fast Tempo
What is it about Oregon that causes Lane Kiffin to frequently mention the tempo of its offense? For one thing, the Ducks are usually have a hand on the ball and are ready to snap as soon as the officials spots it.
That makes it difficult for a defense to even communicate from the sideline, let along substitute during game.

fumbled the grammar on this one...
If Wolf is writing these posts on a cell phone, the error rate isn't so bad, I suppose. But if he's typing on an actual keyboard, sheesh!
Fast typing. Wolfie is practicing for them ducks! Two fingers on the keypad wolf! Breathe..
Typing with one hand...
I'm tired of hearing about Oregon. I want to see that perennial underachieving program win a decent bowl game before pretending that they are unbeatable. Please!
Punch them in the mouth a few times in the first quarter, including getting a solid hit or two James and Thomas, and you'll see yow they slow down. You have to let the defense loose early on, even if it means that you get burned a couple times.
Spot on, Rusty Buckets. I'm sick and tired of Oregon pretending to be the best team in the country following that snoozer in the Rose Bowl last year. USC dominated Ohio State in 2008. In 2009, with a young team, horrible coaching staff, and freshman QB playing his first road game in the Horseshoe @ Ohio State, USC won. But Oregon's point-a-minute offense couldn't beat the Buckeyes in Pasadena?
Please, Trojans have as good a chance as anyone to beat these wannabes. And if they beat us, they beat us. They'll be the better team that day. Let's see them win a BCS game. But don't think SC won't go down swinging. I expect the Trojans to win Saturday.
FIGHT ON!
I think the best way to communicate b/n the D coaches & the players against an up-tempo spread is to have the entire team know the calls & signal them so each player can see. If the signal goes to 1 player he might not have time to communicate it to everybody else.
USC's defense ranked 87 in total defense...2 spots lower than UCLA...and USC's passing defense is 112th out of 120 Div-1 teams - yes it ranks waaaaay below UCLA as well...you clowns actually think USC will stop the might Ducks??? buahahahahahah buahahahahaha buaahahahahaha.
@stinker, taste it!! (_!_)
Rusty Buckets, you've spelled out a winning SC Defensive formula. Smash mouth for four quarters.
We get it done by placing the Strongside and Weakside LB's on the line of scrimmage to turn OU's ground game INSIDE where our 4 down lineman can make a play. We've got Kinnard and Galippo for outside strength, Shane Horton and Michael Morgan for outside speed...use both. Whoever gets it done, finishs the game. (Neither Galippo nor Kinard work well in the Middle.) When the OU tailback comes in motion one of our Outside LBs will meet him in the backfield as soon as the handoff is made and beat the hell out of his Global Warming ass !!! Play man to man single coverage in the secondary. As soon as the QB catches the center snap, there should be two Trojan LBs in his business.
And say, why not put T.J.McDonald, all 6-3, 205 pounds of him, at MLB with Russ Cumming, 6-1, 230 pounder, as backup? Slip Marshall Jones in at Strong Safety.
My son is reluctant to attend the game after what happened against Stanford least year. The Hell with Stanford. If Dr. Barkley plays his game and the D delivers a Smash Mouth non-stop beating, WE WIN, with no doubts.
Fight On!
@shammer47, dream on dude...have you actually seen any of the USC games? those DLinemen and your slow LBs are so out shape they will need oxygen tanks...Oregon runs off a play every 15 seconds as soon as the ref puts the ball down within a second they snap the ball...USC will not even have time to substitute, Oregon works at an unbelievable pace.
And probably there were a handful of delusional bruin fans a couple years, following the gutty little 0-59 beatdown in Provo, proclaiming BYU to be the best team in the land. BYU worked at an unbelievable pace that glorious day! However, the cougars ended up losing 3 games that year, including a forgetful Las Vegas Bowl to Arizona.
Oregon is a very good team, but let's be careful not to elevate them to elite status just yet. Besides Stanford, the ducks have not played any noteworthy opponents yet. In fact, the cumulative record of Oregon's opponents (including Portland State) is 17-33. Stanford is responsible for 6 of those 17 wins-take them our of the equation and the opponents' overall record is 11-32.
@Bruin Rob (moron), how many BCS titles has Oregon won? how many BCS games period has Oregon won? how many Heismans does Oregon have? and who loses to Ohio State?
As far as I'm concerned, Oregon can beat USC in the Pac-10, but they're still just an overrated program with nothing to show for all the hype. Until they win a Rose Bowl or other BCS game (or natl title), zzz...
Fight on!
BruinRob-Don't get ahead of yourself the trogies are gonna pull this one off they will lose one more game this season but this will not be it.Oregon showed them way too much against us and SC had that bye to prepare.SC will lose to an Arizona team.
Oklahoma runs the fast paced offense too and it gets stopped. The only time the hurry up really affects the game is when the offense already moved the ball down the field. Then the hurry up helps get TDs instead of field goals because the front 7 on the D are gassed.
Get a 3 and out and you get the ball back in about in one minute.
I think the "real contest" will be the Oregon D, which is fast, athletic and in-shape, but undersized and lacking strength VS USC's O which is big and strong.
UCLA moved the ball on Oregon and so did Tennessee, Stanford, Wa St, Az st. But big plays by the Oregon defense held them in check. Look for much of the same this week.
The one thing that helps Oregon's D this season is all the subbing they do. I noticed that some subs have an upside or strength that the starter does not have.
For example: Casey Matthews does well on pass coverage, blitzes and getting to the sideline, while his sub, Bryson Littlejonh seems to be better at stuffing the hole on a straight ahead running play.
Eddie Pleasant (the former linebacker who couldn't tackle Prior) has been moved to safety and does well on blitzes while his backup seems to cover receivers better.
By now, the coaches have learned how to exploit that and sub in or out players to slow down the opposing offense. And the D subs have half a season behind them are and playing really well.
This 2010 Duck team is way better than last season's.
So comments about the Rose Bowl or Boise St loss do not apply.
Sort of sorry about being cocky. I try to bring something to the discussion here other than trash.
And a breath of fresh air you are oregon 111, although you too have been known to apply the needle on occasion. But some of the posters are so down in the gutter it has reduced the fun and effectiveness of this blog.
The exceptions of course are "Always keeping it Classy" BruinRob and Vainglory Ugly Bucket.
Oregon111, defensive subs? We don't need no stinkin defensive subs! well, actually, we do. Desperately...
@the true moron, you're living in the past moron...USC'a successful "tainted" past does not equate to current success. Right now Oregon is the class of Pac-10 football and they can steamroll over any team, these guys run off plays at a rate of 15 seconds-per, the defense has not time for substitutions, it is an insane system they run.
You have to hand it to BruinRob. He keeps punching in the face on ever more embarrassing on- and off-field antics by the ruins. He's obviously used to humiliation.
@mike, what are you talking about?? your statement coming from a fan of whose team in on probation for 4 years, Bowl banned for 3 years, 10 scholies reduction each year for the next three years, one national title stripped, one heisman stripped, the entire athletic program on a 5 year probation, caught cheating...and I AM SUPPOSED to be embarrassed of my UCLA team??? LMAO
I'm supposed to be embarrassed of following ULLA team and supporting our head coach for suspending players for not conducting themselves like classy amateur athletes??...this coming from a fan that worships USC whose athletes have had 55 players ARRESTED since 2001 for: possession of fire-arms; assault and battery; soliciting sex from an undercover police officer; resisting arrest; multiple DUI arrests to several players; child molestation charges; possession of drugs with intent to sell; and FOUR ALLEDGED RAPE ACCUSATIONS???
You're calling the kettle black???
Trojies, are truly DELUSIONAL!! then you wonder why I'm still here on your blogs? it's to remind you of how filthy and SCummy your pathetic program is.
You should feel emabarrassed even going that rout. ROTFLMAO
Is Kiffin that scared of Oregon? Looks like he is making excuses about their tempo in case he gets his ass handed to him.
BTW, to those fans that say that SC owns the Rose Bowl: who would want to own the crappy-ass coliseum but SC anyway? After all, no important games are played there, unlike at the Rose Bowl.
That last comment from another ucla honk was interesting-- no important games are played at the coliseum?
Well, off the top of my head, there was the undefeated SC team beating ucla for the national championship in the last minute in 1967; the 1969 team beating ucla in the last minute to preserve another undefeated season; the 1972 annihilation of Notre Dame; the great comeback victory over ND in 1974 to set up another national championship; the Stanford comeback in 1979 that cost SC a national championship; the 1999 victory that ended ucla's run against SC; in the 2000s the victory over Cal where the Bears had several chances to win the game at the end; the Fresno State game that Bush had an all-world game; and the No. 1 Oregon team getting beat by SC in 2010 (forecasting the future).
Barrister John, You are too predictable. Of course you would give so much self-importance to USC and the games that they play at home. As I said before: no important games are played at the Coliseum.
