When Bad Is Good

Oregon ranks 114th in the nation in time of possession. The Ducks have the ball for only 26 minutes, 40 seconds per game. They score so fast, they barely have the ball. It also shows how fit their defense is because it is on the field for most of the game.

Time of possession is the most overrated and misused statistic in football. Even if you buy in to the argument that having the ball more is better (Oregon's success clearly refutes that) the actual time (as in seconds ticking off) is completely worthless. If you want look at a true measure of ball control, look to the number of plays run.

Stop using T.O.P. as a barometer of anything.
