Scholarship Count

Although USC has nine scholarships available in January, it is important to remember that fullback Soma Vainuku, who was ineligible in the fall, is expected to be one of the those nine. So that technically means eight are available.

Ineligible? Soma did not qualify for admittance. No one is ineligible from applying. Not qualifying is very different from ineligible.

Also, Thearon Collier, Miami transfer currently with the team, is expected to go on scholie in Jan.

There aren't 9 quality guys out there who will come in as EEs. This whole discussion is just a bunch of wishful thinking.

I really don't think Wolf knows what he's talking about when it comes to counting available scholarships. I questioned him about his assertion that SC could sign 9 midyear enrollees in his 10/18 forum. He responded: "The nine mid-year scholarships [awarded in 1/11] actually count against the 2009-10 year, not 2010-11." But that's not true.

NCAA Bylaw 15.5.6.1 limits FBS schools to 85 football scholarships. The student athletes receiving those awards are called "counters," so a school can only have 85 "counters." 15.5.6.1 also limits FBS schools to 25 "initial counters" annually.

According to 15.5.6.3.1, initial counters include recruited scholarship recipients who start in the fall. At the beginning of the current AY, '10-'11, SC signed 14 FR who enrolled in 8/10 (DiPoalo, Scroggins, Morgan, Grimble, Telfer, Woods, Ambles, Uko, Thomas, Pullard, Bailey, Wright, Robey & Brown). So SC had room for 11 more initial counters in AY '10-'11.

According to 15.5.6.3.2, scholarship recipients that start the following term (i.e., "midyear" enrollees) are initial counters for that AY (or the next AY if the school has already maxed out its initial counters for the current AY). (So, Wolf is obviously mistaken--or perhaps it was an editing error like Keyshawn's #!) Thus, Baxter & Prater, who enrolled in 1/10, were initial counters in the '09-'10 AY, and SC still had room for 11 more initial counters for the '10-'11 AY.

Here's where it gets tricky. SC offered 3 WO scholarships to Markowitz, Cumming & Houston. According to 15.5.6.3.2, those 3 became counters against the 85 limit this year, but they didn't have to be initial counters until the following year if SC had already maxed out its initial counters. Since SC did not max out its initial counters, my understanding is that those 3 were initial counters for the '10-'11 AY. That left room for 8 more initial counters for the '10-'11 AY.

Collier transferred from MIA & is sitting out 1 season as per the NCAA transfer rule. According to 15.5.6.3, he's either like the 14 FR or like the WOs that earned a scholarship (depending on whether he was recruited). Either way, his scholarship is an initial counter for the '10-'11 AY too. That left room for 7 initial counters for the '10-'11 AY that can enroll in 1/11; not 9 as Wolf suggests.

That's good stuff, NJT. This is confusing. Per Lev, there is also a rule that a school can never bring in more then 10 mid-year enrollees in Jan? Regardless of where the school is on scholies, there is a hard cap of 10 in Jan. Ever heard of that?

Yet again, thanks NJT.
Regardless of the count, can one of those be a FIELD GOAL KICKER, preferably from over 40 yards out!
Talk about an opportunity for a quality kicker!!!
Why do seemingly all the quality kickers end up across town where their kicks are largely irrelevant?!
