Garness Commits
Offensive lineman David Garness of City College of San Francisco committed to USC and is expected to enroll in January. He is not as highly rated as normally expected for a USC recruit but USC's got to sign as many linemen as possible, especially if they can qualify in January.

According to Rivals, he's the #4 rated JUCO OT. He's one of the better players available that satisfies both position of need and EE. There is no doubt that he is an important committment. Welcome to the Trojan family, David.
It seems to me that Wolf is "star" struck. I like the fact that Kiffin is offering some lightly regarded players rather than just every 5-star rated athlete from LA to NY. Maybe Kiffin & his pos coaches are doing their homework & not just recruiting off other guys’ boards? Or maybe Wolf has traveled to SF to watch Garness play & has observed with his own keen eye that Garness is not up to snuff? Wolf seems to think that recruiting fell off in Carroll's later years & if you add up the stars (8 5-stars/12 4-stars in 06, 10/5 in 07, 4/9 in 08, 4/9 in 09--Scout) Wolf’s point is valid. But the 18 5-star recruits of 06 & 07 should have been the leaders on the 09 & 10 teams, no? Well, here are the names: David Ausberry, Allen Bradford, CJ Gable, Vidal Hazelton, Stafon Johnson, Antwine Perez, Taylor Mays & Josh Tatum in 06 & Martin Coleman, Aaron Corp, Chris Galippo, Everson Griffin, Da’John Harris, Ronald Johnson, Marshall Jones, Joe McKnight, Kristofer O’Dowd & Marc Tyler in 07. Blue chip recruits ought to be expected to make all-conference teams & get selected in the 1st 3 rounds of the draft, no? IMO Mays was the only guy who actually lived up to his 5-star potential, RoJo & O’Dowd got close & Griffen probably would have fulfilled his potential if he hadn’t left a year early. What about the other 14 5-star, can’t-miss recruits Carroll hauled in 06 & 07? How productive were they? We can argue about the merits of certain individuals, but the genral point--that the overwhelming majority of 5-star recruits at SC in 06 & 07 failed to deliever--is valid, right?
Hey, New Mexico and UTEP offered this guy !!!!!!
Yeah, he did a good job keeping the Mt. SAC defensive line out of the Rams' backfield on Saturday. Maybe Kiffin should have been looking at one of the Mounties, who pounded CCSF, 34-7!
@5DOLAR: Ouch! 9 sacks & only 93 yards rushing. Hopefully those sacks did not come around the right end since Garness plays LT at CCSF. Let's hope Cregg saw something he really liked on tape.
@NJT,
Just a couple of points...I think that part of the reason for some of those 06-07
failures could have been the rapidly revolving door in the coaching staff. PC's staffs had such a high turnover rate during those seasons. This program has also been relatively snake bit regarding injury issues too.
The linebackers however succeeded primarily because of the incredible talent and in spite of coaches Norton and Seto.
@torpedoman: I couldn't agree more. There are 3 things a coach & his staff must do: 1) develop players; 2) put them into position, as individuals and as a team, to win games & 3) recruit players to develop. Kiffin was the recruiting coordinator that help Carroll sign the 06 & 07 class. But Kiffin left a couple weeks before the 07 class signed. It's impossible to argue that there was no talent in those spectacular classes. But it seems apparent that Carroll's staff failed to develop them & the wheels came off in 09.
