According to Rivals.com, the state of California had 253 players sign national letter of intents out of 104,224 high school football players. That means one player signed for every 412 who played football.
That's the long odds of getting a college football scholarship.

I have often said that the football carrot stick has held back thousands of kids who thought they would eventually make money playing in the NFL, and hence did not otherwise study as hard as they might have.

And look at the odds. California high schoolers have 1/4 of 1% chance of obtaining a college scholarship. And then out of the 10,000 or so college players (approximately 120 top college football schools times about 80 kids per)maybe 100 or 1% will make any money in the NFL.

.25% times 1% means a California high school kid has 1 chance in 40,000 of making NFL money.

Better hit the books buckos.
