The Ridiculous Meter
I haven't seen anything more ridiculous recently than the pompous title Stanford affords women's basketball coach Tara VanDerveer. No, she is not the women's basketball coach in Stanford publications. VanDerveer is the ``Setsuko Ishiyama Director of Women's Basketball.'' That should add a few more UConn fans to the following.

Pompous?
That's the pot calling the kettle Wolf.
Well, they endow courts and even tip-off center circles, so why not basketball coaches? You don't get to complain until you're a donor because someone has to pay for the shoes, etc
Hey, she can be anything she wants. Her basketball program trumps anything, and I mean anything basketball in this conference today. Without her program, the PAC-10 would be nothing. Make her "your empress" Tara Vanderveer!
It's because she has what's called a "coachship," similar to a scholarship, or directorship. She isn't getting extra money; the income from the coachship helps defray the salary and other related expenses of the head coach for a particular sport. A bunch of the Stanford coaches have received named coachships.
Wolfie, I dub thee the Chuck Bucket Director of Journalistic Integrity.
SC is plenty pompous, but standorf gets a pass? It's not like they put their athletes through the same academic vetting process as non-athletes because they don't. And it's not like they put their athletes in the main curriculum because they aren't. We know the former because none of their athletes have the academic qualifications to get in. and once they're in, they get a buffet of "gut" courses. When it comes to athletics, the 'dorf is no different from any other big time atheltics school.
