USC Wildcats
We could focus on how Arizona's Derrick Williams, Lamont Jones and Solomon Hill combined for 61 points and 21 rebounds tonight in the Wildcats' victory over Duke.
But the better question, from a USC perspective, is why former athletic director Mike Garrett released Williams and Jones from the letters of intent? Remember, Tim Floyd already left (was forced out) and Garrett basically ran basketball at that point. He never tried to convince them to stay.
From the moment Floyd departed, it seemed Garrett wanted to nuke his memory from the program, including his recruiting class. Even the self-imposed probation last year seemed to be a way of pointing a finger at Floyd. Their relationship was so bad at the end, I wouldn't rule any action out for being based on vindictiveness.

Ultimately, it was the right thing to do. Those guys were recruited to play under Floyd. Although I guess by letting them transfer we denied Scotty, and the rest of the basketball world, from raking us over the coals for holding these kids hostage, etc.
At the end of the day we paid dearly for getting in bed with a low character one and done guy that couldn't even get SC out of the first round of the NCAA's. Not saying Floyd actually did anything wrong, but Mayo showed up on campus with a ton of known baggage and that falls at Floyd's feel. And as "CEO" of the athletic Dept., Garrett's as well.
The OJ Mayo experiment failed, and USC is still paying for it with no depth and lost recruits like Williams. What is amazing is that the NCAA initially cleared Mayo to be a student-athlete at USC.
Why recruit a one-and-done player like Mayo?
It seems like in college basketball now, you either have to accept so-so performance or get on the corrupt one-and-done train and hope it doesn't jump the track (as it likely will, sooner or later, for any school dealing with these kids and their sleazy associates).
I suppose college football is not so different (check out today's news re: the latest Tressel revelation), but college BB seems like even more of a crooked joke. I mean, at least we got more than one good year of entertainment out of Reggie Bush (even if those years no longer count).
MG's ineptitude imploded the hoops program, and it will take at least one more year and probably two to rebuild it. Mike Garrett cut off Tim Floyd from communication leaving him dangling. Essentially, MG was throwing Timmy under the bus for the hoops program violations. Yet, Timmy was NEVER CITED by the NCAA for any violations in their final report.
If MG wanted Timmy out, he should have fired him in an orderly, professional manner, communicated fluidly with the recruits (they only heard silence from MG too), and asked them to at least meet with Timmy's replacement once before a release would have been granted. Odds are that KO could have talked a few of those kids, at least, into staying. And, MG should NEVER have granted a release w/out excluding Pac10 conference foes.
MG, the most inept AD in USC history. The BoT must have been blinded by Pete Carroll's success to allow the MG disaster to play out for soooooooo long.
