A Game Away
UC Irvine plays Virginia at 1 p.m. (PT) today with the winner going to the College World Series. I note this today because there were some people who recommended USC hire coaches like George Horton (Oregon), Dave Serrano (Cal State Fullerton) or UCLA's John Savage.
But none of the them are still playing today like Mike Gillespie.

Then there's Cal, who had the program dropped only to be saved by it's baseball alums. A win today and Cal is in the CWS.
Wolf should also note that UCI is not a private school, thus it costs far less to attend on a partial scholarship than USC, but that doesn't fit what Wolf is trying to do here.
ucla is not a private school. why do they continually suck at football?
Not to mention that if MG had worked as hard at SC as he has at UCI, he'd never been let go in the first place.
Maybe Gillespie didn't want to work for MG aymore?
Or the Oregon State coach who Wolf recommended.
Hey, this is really a hell of a game, tied 1-1, top of the ninth, Anteaters with runners at the corners and no outs.
No wonder Garrett FIRED him. What a stupid call to leave that pitcher in after FOUR straight balls.
Gillespie's team choked again having two outs, no runners on base and two strikes against the batter. He had three bad years out of the last four at USC so what sign was there that things were going to improve. The giant mistake was letting him dictate the hiring of his son-in-law as part of some backroom deal to pay him off w/o money being involved. He served the Trojans well for most of his twenty years. It is too bad Garrett and Winston didn't go with him into semi-retirement and someone with any knowledge had a search committee to find a top notch coach.
DW should get the blame for that. He was in charge of baseball and MG took DW's advice to let Mike go and bring in his son in law. THAT is FACT. BUT, as long as you give MG credit for follwoing DG's advice on Pete, I'm good with giving MG the $h!t for Chad.
