Answer Wednesday! (Part 2)

Which recruit that USC missed out on in recent seasons hurt the most? I say without a doubt who I think it was in this segment.

You keep bringing up the names of this former usc commits constantly in your blog: Alshon Jeffery, Seantrel Henderson, Vontaze Burfict, Manti Te'o and Deanthony Thomas.
Giving their on/off field performances and potential, which one you think was the biggest loss for the Trojans?

A: Without a doubt I would say Burfict or Te'o. With one of them, the defense plugs a big hole in the middle that existed the past two seasons and probably wins three-to-four more games. There would be as many collapses last season, for sure, with an eraser like Te'o or Burfict anchoring the defense instead of trying to stick a circle into a square like the poor decision to move Devon Kennard to middle linebacker.

Manti Te'o was head for USC, but at the last minute his mom convinced him that he should be going to a parochial school.

Burfect couldn't meet the academic standard at USC, so he had to change his commit to ASU, where the academic standards are "non existent". So I've read.

Sure would've liked to have seen both here at SC. Oh well.

Wow miguelito, you refer to USC as southern cal just like Charlie Bucket does. Did you know that nobody gives a $hit when you guys do that?

thekatman.......in fairness to ASU, they have to meet the same NCAA standards as USC. Burfict was a mess academically, and USC told him they couldn't get him in. ASU spent a lot of time with him and put together a plan he had to execute to get him in. SC could have done the same thing.

Is it safe to say that Vontaze Burfict qualified i.e. passed the NCAA clearinghouse, but was worried that he wouldn't be able to stay eligible once he enrolled at USC. As I understood it, very few if any schools have additional academic requirements above the NCAA's standards. Anyone know how that works?

huntingtonharvey.........actually, Burfict didn't qualify until ASU put together a program to get him qualified, which included summer school classes. There was a question of him qualifying right before his freshman season started.

I'll bet if Coach Baxter had been here, we could have gotten him in. Baxter is renowned for his academic gameplan, which seeks to maximize the student athletes' chances of success by preaching good study habits and holding players accountable.

Scott's Answer: "Without a doubt I would say Burfict or Te'o...."

Um, Scott, you could not choose between Burfict or Te'o. Thus, your answer is full of doubt.

Jethro: for the umpteenth time, Kiff and the Agin' Cajun both favor the term Southern Cal when referring to the trOXans' school. Shirley, if it's good enough for them??

but in any case from your comment i see now the term Southern Cal still packs a sting!! i was beginning to worry it had finally wore off!! thanks for the gumball, Jethro!!
