About That Commitment
Yesterday's verbal commitment from defensive end Pio Vatuvei looks like one of Lane Kiffin's overachiever picks. Vatuvei was offered schools like Fresno State, Washington State, Oregon State and Washington along with Arizona, Cal and Colorado.
But Kiffin's wanted to take players that will overcome any supposed athletic deficiencies by working harder than everyone else. Even in the 15-scholarship era, he appears to be looking for some of those prospects.
I thought I read on this blog, back in the day, that Kiffin, in 2006, openly wondered whether PC would ever consider someone like Troy Palamalu. PC answered that question by recruiting five-star all-time greats like Joe McKnight and Everson Griffen.
Athleticism doesn't appear to be a shortcoming as ESPN says that he attained the highest SPARQ score of any lineman in the nation for those who attended the Nike combines in the spring.

Wolf is a hypocrite. He criticizes Carroll for chasing star ratings. Then, when Kiffin's staff recruits a guy based on something other than star ratings, he has the audicity to suggest that Kiffin is reaching for overachievers. Honestly Wolf, I don't know where Vatuvei ranks under the assessment of Kiffins staff (top prospect or overachiever), but neither do you. You judge the guy solely based on who else is recruiting him. Seems like you and your idol Carroll have something in common. Unfortunately for you, Carroll distinguishes himself by being charismatic, articulate, good-looking, rich, and highly successful. And like him or not, nobody can call him a hypocrite.
