Double Standard?

So where's the outrage by the media of Paul Dee? Is he immune to criticism? Is the NCAA immune to answering questions about Dee's involvement of oversight at his own university and allow USC's penalties not to be re-evaluated given this realization? Obviously there is no continuity nor unbias when the NCAA rules on infractions. We can cite several contemporary decisions where other universities in which the offenses were beyond what USC allegedly commited, yet not punished as severely.

An investigation should be demanded, and any decision that Mr. Dee's influence was involved should be analyzed for bias.

What is interesting is that during the SC investigation, not all the members of the COI were in favor of the harsh penalties. They were more or less bullied into agreeing to the sanctions by Paul Dee.

Let's finally put SC's sanctions to rest. They're here to stay, and the Trojans will be hurt for years, there is no changing that, even if Miami was found to have paid $100,000 to each of its starting players.

The other issue is, Miami reported this immediately and is COOPERATING with the NCAA. They will self impose some minor sanctions, Missy will rubber stamp it, and that will be that. Now why couldn't we do that?

Reggie Bush is beginning to look like a chump among cheaters. Putting up with the sanctions was bad enough. But the NCAA's subsequent behavior seems to validate even the most cynical SC homer's suspicions of corruption and duplicity at the NCAA.

We all get it, LJ, the sanctions stand - especially because the University's leadership is laying down. That doesn't mean we can't - or the University administration shouldn't - raise hell about the glaring inequity in the sanctions handed to USC versus all of the subsequent infractions.

Mike Garrett's comments about the sanctions were viewed as intemperate at the time and cost him his job. Mike Garrett was right. The Greek owes him an apology.

I read the story, and it's a story similar to Auburn's and Ohio State's $100 hand shakes. But I read nowhere on there that says Miami U knew of the players receiving benefits...so how does this compare to USC? it doesn't! unless a Miami player got a pimped out car and registered it with the university, as Bush did - or unless the booster has a recorded conversation with the Miami coach in which the coach is telling the booster to have all the "paperwork straight" to make sure his star player's parents and family are living the high life in a free mansion as Bush's parents had...or unless one of the RB coaches is pictured with the booster as McNair was with the agents that Bush screwed for an equivalent of $600,000 YOU CAN NOT compare this case to USC's...we're talking apples and oranges here folks!!! so STOP this foolish comparisons!! that's an order!!! have a nice day.

You're right, BruinRob...one football player's parents living in a "mansion" 150 miles from campus does not compare to a 7-year party/orgy involving the entire Miami football team hosted by a booster/sports "agent" who ran the tunnel with the team on multiple occasions. Thanks for pointing out to us that a "pimped out" 10-year old Caprice rises to the level of two new Escalades provided to a Miami player and his girlfriend and for believing that a $700,000 house in East San Diego County is a "mansion." @Oneiwatch - I do get, but I think we're talking about two different animals here. Miami has always been a dirty program, it has been for the past 30 years. The real question here is, did the school know about it? Just because I take a picture with Dan Guerrero, or Rick Neuheisel it doesn't mean they knew that I was inviting Kevin Prince or Richard Brehaut to my house and having hoes waiting for them, or that I was supplying them with cash and gifts. I think Ohio State's violations are greater, not because of the players selling their gear for spending money, but because Tressel knew about it and did nothing about it and instead chose to play his star players and simply looked the other way.

As for USC, Carroll knew about it, McNair knew about it, the school knew about Bush's car and "supposedly" never reported it to compliance. It was this type of arrogance by Carroll and Mike Garrett that ultimately did them in with the 2nd harshest penalty given to a program since SMU.

@Count_Blah - first of all, it WAS reported numerous times of Carroll's recoreded conversation, and the REPORT does say that Lake's and Michael's recorded was NOT permitted as evidence in the investigation simply because it was recorded "illegally" WITHOUT Carroll's concent.

I believe Petros Papadakis more than I believe you when Papadakis reported that Carroll walked out of the NCAA infractions committee and told them "I'm outta here" because he had a "basketball game to attend"

It was also NOT reported in the investigations of Dwayne Jarret's free rent paid by Leinnart's dad, does it mean it didn't happen? it was SIMPLY not even necessary to incriminate USC further than USC had incriminated itself already.

McKnight driving an SUV by his GF's boss did happen, it was reported by the L.A. Times reporter that covered USC Mr. Klein - again, it was not included in the report because it WAS NOT necessary to further incriminate USC - Klein even had photos in which Carroll and the other coaches are around McKnight as McKnight is putting his baby in the car seat.

Anyway, the whole report was about BUSH and BUSH ONLY, had all the other incidents been included USC would NOT have a football team today as we speak, it would have gone down in history as the second team to receive the death penalty.

As UCLA football fans, we may not have had as much to cheer about in the past decade, but at least we have nothing to be ashamed about, as YOU SUCsters have to endure all the butt jokes of cheating, from fans across the country. As bad as our teams have been the past 5 years our average attendance over the five years has been about 67,000 while your attendance in the '90s - when you sucked without cheating - was an average of 35,000.

All of the search results show your many, many posts on this blog where you make this allegation. Can you point to one article where this allegation of the recorded conversation is made? Also, just because he tells the guy to have his "paperwork straight" doesn't mean he's telling the guy to fabricate it. Carroll may have been led to believe that it was a legitimate arrangement and he was just asking the guy to produce documentation that states such.

I am simply asking you to back up your claims that such conversation 1) was recorded, 2) was impermissible by the NCAA's infractions board, and 3) Carroll suggested that the other party fabricate documents to make the lease arrangement look legitimate as I believe you are insinuating. @trojanPete - unfortunately for me and fortunately for you, I'm not a research buff. I've looked for articles in the L.A. times regarding Lloyd lake and Michaels. But I will find it eventually, in which the "recorded conversation" is reprted, and another article that states the recorded could not be presented as evidence because it was done without Carroll's concent.

But, if the NCAA placed USC on prbation for Lack of "Institutional Control" it means the school and the administrators knew of something and failed to take proper actions.

Thanks for looking into this. I found an article that talks about illegally recorded conversations but they only involved Lake, Reggie Bush, and Bush's stepfather. In the book, "Tarnished Heisman," the recorded conversations are transcripted but I can't find any mention of Pete Carroll-recorded conversations.

As for the "Lack of Institutional Control" argument that you are making, it is pure speculation. To this day, nobody knows what "Institutional Control" really means in the eyes of the NCAA.

Don't expect that pu$$y Pat Haden to jump in and say anything. He does nothing for the USC faithful. Instead, he hangs the fans out to dry... then hands them the bill.

@BruinRob: Apology accepted. I believe the game I'm referring to that had 32,000 attendance was Senior Salute against ASU... I haven't looked it up, perhaps I have an incorrect figure.. It was certainly not 70,000 though... Honestly, I don't know where I got the 32,000 number from, could have been in the 40s... Any way you look at it, I recall hearing/reading UCLA seniors speak of their disappointment in the attendance for the attendance on that game.

It was in 2009, we had over 46,000 not quite 47,000 still an embarrassing number however, and yes the seniors were dissappointed as well as the true fans like myself that show up regardless of the heat, cold, or just a not very entertaining team to watch.
