Double Standard?

It sure sounds like former Miami athletic director Paul Dee is guilty of the lack oversight he roundly criticized USC for last summer when he led the NCAA's committee on infractions. Judge for yourself in this Palm Beach Post article where he admits he knew of the booster accused of giving gifts to players.

So where's the outrage by the media of Paul Dee? Is he immune to criticism? Is the NCAA immune to answering questions about Dee's involvement of oversight at his own university and allow USC's penalties not to be re-evaluated given this realization? Obviously there is no continuity nor unbias when the NCAA rules on infractions. We can cite several contemporary decisions where other universities in which the offenses were beyond what USC allegedly commited, yet not punished as severely.

An investigation should be demanded, and any decision that Mr. Dee's influence was involved should be analyzed for bias.

LJ, you are exactly the type booster SC is looking for. Everyone knows the sanctions aren't going to change. Thanks LJ. Sometimes it takes a lawyer to take something that seems so ridiculous and make it seem reasonable.

Clearly, the actions of one player in a city some 100+ miles away are more traceable and should be punished more more severely than a rogue booster openly handing out prostitutes, jewelry, and jetski rides to football players right in the university's backyard. Only an attorney could distill this information and make everyone understand it thusly.

If 1/10 of this is true....................the death penalty!

“In 100 hours of jailhouse interviews during Yahoo! Sports’ 11-month investigation, Hurricanes booster Nevin Shapiro described a sustained, eight-year run of rampant NCAA rule-breaking, some of it with the knowledge or direct participation of at least seven coaches from the Miami football and basketball programs. At a cost that Shapiro estimates in the millions of dollars, he said his benefits to athletes included but were not limited to cash, prostitutes, entertainment in his multimillion-dollar homes and yacht, paid trips to high-end restaurants and nightclubs, jewelry, bounties for on-field play (including bounties for injuring opposing players), travel and, on one occasion, an abortion.”

Here's another gem from the article

“But instead, Shapiro said he was enabled by the university, allowed to run the entire Miami team out of tunnel and onto the field – twice – and once honored on the field by former athletic director Paul Dee during a game. The same Paul Dee who wagged a finger at USC as the chairman of the NCAA’s committee on infractions in 2010, chiding the Reggie Bush/O.J. Mayo scandal as a systematic failure.”

"High-profile players demand high-profile compliance," Dee said while announcing USC’s sanctions.

Now Shapiro says Miami’s athletic compliance – Dee’s own backyard while Shapiro was operating – suffered one catastrophic oversight after another.

Don't forget that the cheaters of Troy stonewalled the NCAA for years unlike other schools! Go ahead and open the investigation again and this time they can look at Joe McFumble's recruitment (the phone call from Reggie Bush that he was going to stonewall the NCAA) and his illegal ride. How about Dillon Baxter? Heck, take a look at Marc Tyler's allegations.

Baby QB is already a cheater and everyone knows about what it took to get Barkley to go to SUC. A little questioning around Mater Dei by the NCAA would yield some more allegations!

You're right, BruinRob...one football player's parents living in a "mansion" 150 miles from campus does not compare to a 7-year party/orgy involving the entire Miami football team hosted by a booster/sports "agent" who ran the tunnel with the team on multiple occasions. Thanks for pointing out to us that a "pimped out" 10-year old Caprice rises to the level of two new Escalades provided to a Miami player and his girlfriend and for believing that a $700,000 house in East San Diego County is a "mansion." Good observation. Apparently you didn't see the pictures of the Miami "booster" with the football players in the article. Maybe you should have asked the person who read you the article to show you the pictures.

@Oneiwatch - I do get, but I think we're talking about two different animals here. Miami has always been a dirty program, it has been for the past 30 years. The real question here is, did the school know about it? Just because I take a picture with Dan Guerrero, or Rick Neuheisel it doesn't mean they knew that I was inviting Kevin Prince or Richard Brehaut to my house and having hoes waiting for them, or that I was supplying them with cash and gifts. I think Ohio State's violations are greater, not because of the players selling their gear for spending money, but because Tressel knew about it and did nothing about it and instead chose to play his star players and simply looked the other way.

As for USC, Carroll knew about it, McNair knew about it, the school knew about Bush's car and "supposedly" never reported it to compliance. There were recorded conversation between Carrll and Lake, McNair and Lake, cell pone bills to support Lake's claims that Carroll and he talked, etc. etc. etc. When Carroll met with the NCAA for the hearings Carroll walked out on the investigation's committee in the first 5 minutes and simply said "I;m outta here".

Furthermore, while the investigation was going on Carroll allowed his players to constantly get in trouble. Bill Platschke wrote a column in which he says he kept telling Carroll that he should keep thinngs in the low pro and Carroll would say "nothing is going to happen, they're not going to anything to us"...also Carroll knew of Joe McKnight driving an SUV that belong to his GF's boss and aspiring agent and did nothing about it. It was this type of arrogance by Carroll and Mike Garrett that ultimately did them in with the 2nd harshest penalty given to a program since SMU.

Miami U and USC two different animals, each bad but in different categories.

@BruinRob: Generally I don't talk to Bruin "fans" since it's usually a waste of time since you people live on a different planet with different colored glasses. However your post above is so egregiously incorrect that I feel I must.

"As for USC, Carroll knew about it, McNair knew about it, the school knew about Bush's car and "supposedly" never reported it to compliance." This is blatantly false. Carroll and USC were found to have no knowledge whatsoever. McNair was said to have known based on falsely reported information. The whole case was based on the need to "get" USC by Paul Dee, Josephine Potuto, and the rest of the COI.

"There were recorded conversation between Carrll and Lake, McNair and Lake, cell pone bills to support Lake's claims that Carroll and he talked, etc. etc. etc." Again, not true. I respectfully request that you go to the report and show me where the COI found this to be true.

"When Carroll met with the NCAA for the hearings Carroll walked out on the investigation's committee in the first 5 minutes and simply said "I;m outta here"." Not true either. I know someone who was IN THE ROOM during the proceedings and Carroll was there the whole time with the rest of the administration.

Furthermore, while the investigation was going on Carroll allowed his players to constantly get in trouble. Bill Platschke wrote a column in which he says he kept telling Carroll that he should keep thinngs in the low pro and Carroll would say "nothing is going to happen, they're not going to anything to us"...also Carroll knew of Joe McKnight driving an SUV that belong to his GF's boss and aspiring agent and did nothing about it." Not true either. If this was the case then it would have been mentioned in the report. Additionally, McKnight was held out of the bowl game, just as Baxter was held out for the golf cart ride.

Amazing that Bruin "fans" care more about what happens with USC then what happens to their own school. You, Bucket, and the rest of the UCLA trolls probably didn't even attend UCLA. If UCLA was relevant and the "fans" really cared, then why does UCLA get 30,000 "fans" during senior salute? Pretty pathetic.

BruinRob Author Profile Page said:

@Count_Blah - first of all, it WAS reported numerous times of Carroll's recoreded conversation, and the REPORT does say that Lake's and Michael's recorded was NOT permitted as evidence in the investigation simply because it was recorded "illegally" WITHOUT Carroll's concent.

I believe Petros Papadakis more than I believe you when Papadakis reported that Carroll walked out of the NCAA infractions committee and told them "I'm outta here" because he had a "basketball game to attend"

It was also NOT reported in the investigations of Dwayne Jarret's free rent paid by Leinnart's dad, does it mean it didn't happen? it was SIMPLY not even necessary to incriminate USC further than USC had incriminated itself already.

McKnight driving an SUV by his GF's boss did happen, it was reported by the L.A. Times reporter that covered USC Mr. Klein - again, it was not included in the report because it WAS NOT necessary to further incriminate USC - Klein even had photos in which Carroll and the other coaches are around McKnight as McKnight is putting his baby in the car seat.

Anyway, the whole report was about BUSH and BUSH ONLY, had all the other incidents been included USC would NOT have a football team today as we speak, it would have gone down in history as the second team to receive the death penalty.

As UCLA football fans, we may not have had as much to cheer about in the past decade, but at least we have nothing to be ashamed about, as YOU SUCsters have to endure all the butt jokes of cheating, from fans across the country. I guarantee you that if UCLA was discovered to be a dirty cheater as SUC has, you and all the trOJan faithful would be all over us.

As for 30,000 fans during senior salute? obviously you must have been referring to our basketball team, you are grossly exaggerating, since we can only put 14,000 inside Pauley Pavillion...in football? I was there, you moron, so spew your hate about a cleanly run program and the most faithful fans in college football in the country to yourself as you cry yourself asleep at night.

I guarantee you that if SUC had a 4-8 record you would be lucky to have 30,000 fans at your games even with free tickets for buying a burrito and an horchata at "Chano's" tacos (my cousin's the owner). As bad as our teams have been the past 5 years our average attendance over the five years has been about 67,000 while your attendance in the '90s - when you sucked without cheating - was an average of 35,000.

UCLA has an always will have the only "true" fans in L.A. bad teams? our fans still show up - while at USC, you lose 3 games and the attendance drops 15,000 try losing 8 games, and see what your attendance would be like.

Care to talk some more smack? don't even get me started there "fake Count". (((((BOOOOOOOOOM)))))

All of the search results show your many, many posts on this blog where you make this allegation. Can you point to one article where this allegation of the recorded conversation is made? Also, just because he tells the guy to have his "paperwork straight" doesn't mean he's telling the guy to fabricate it. Carroll may have been led to believe that it was a legitimate arrangement and he was just asking the guy to produce documentation that states such.

I'm not going to spend my day searching 5 year old newspaper articles to prove a moot point. Any long-time USC fan knows that there were plenty of times in which the recorded coversation "allegedly" took place between Carroll and Lake/Michaels, as as reported in the media.

The fact that, I won't take the time to research it, does not take away the fact that it WAS reported that it took place...YOU and I know as well as trOJan Pete know that I am not making that story up, so if you want to continue being in denial, that is your choice.

Next thing trOJanpete will be saying is that the Bush family never accepted money or favors, and that Bush never received a pimped out Impala, and that it is not true that Bush ever registered the vehicle with the school...and that McNair never knew of Bush and the agents, even thought there were plenty of text messages being exchanged between McNair and the agents, and that McNair is really not him in that picture with Lake and Michaels at a Hollywood night club. I am not saying that a conversation did not take place. I am simply asking you to back up your claims that such conversation 1) was recorded, 2) was impermissible by the NCAA's infractions board, and 3) Carroll suggested that the other party fabricate documents to make the lease arrangement look legitimate as I believe you are insinuating. I am also confused by the following comment you made--"Any long-time USC fan knows that there were plenty of times in which the recorded coversation "allegedly" took place..."

Are you saying they recorded the same conversation multiple times? That's kind of hard to do. Haha. Actually, I get what you're saying but you can't find a single article that shows that such a recorded conversation took place and that it was impermissible. No, I'm not in denial about Bush and the family receiving benefits. Yes, there is a trail that leads to McNair even though the Infractions committee couldn't prove anything. BruinRob, you say you don't have the time to dig up a 5-year-old article. But you sure take time to write long-winded posts on this blog. Isn't that odd?

BruinRob Author Profile Page said:

@trojanPete - unfortunately for me and fortunately for you, I'm not a research buff. I've looked for articles in the L.A. times regarding Lloyd lake and Michaels. But I will find it eventually, in which the "recorded conversation" is reprted, and another article that states the recorded could not be presented as evidence because it was done without Carroll's concent.

But, if the NCAA placed USC on prbation for Lack of "Institutional Control" it means the school and the administrators knew of something and failed to take proper actions.

@BruinRob: Yep that's the game.. I had the count wrong, thanks for clearing that up... And yes, as a senior playing for a bowl team, the disappointment is understandable.

Thaigreaser, i would gladly take you up on your but I doubt you could afford a round trip limo to take me from the beach to the IE and back.

@NOBS, I would be more than happy to drive to Stanton where you live, meet you in your parking stall, beat the snot out of you, and I'm sure ThaiMex would still be more than glad to provide you that Limo ride to the Emergency Room...I have connections to the local Stanton Hospital and I will make sure you get seen first by the ER staff, this way you can get back to your poodle that will be waiting for you happily to hump you all night long.

Wooooo JBoy wants to duke it out. Hahaha. First of all JBoy you'd need to go to manhattan beach. Secondly, the only nose with discharge would be yours. But I'd get it cleaned up for you, sticking your head in the toilet like the kids in high school. BTW, where is Stanton? Close to yes sir eertos? I'm sending the daughter home shortly. My dog can't take any more. ROFLMAO
