Going For The Record

| | Comments (12) |

If Lane Kiffin ever says he doesn't care about records, ignore him. With USC up 38-17 in the final minute, he had Matt Barkley drop back and pass on first-and-goal at the 5-yard line. Barkley got sacked and lost a chance to set a school record with six TD passes.
Kiffin then went through a strange answer after the game where he said assistant coach Justin Mesa sent in the wrong play. But Barkley disputed that and said ``it was the right call.''
``That was a play-action play we thought would be there,'' Barkley said.
The whole situation was ill-advised as Kiffin risked injury to Barkley, appeared to be running up the score and showed that people are monitoring records on the sideline. None of this is what USC football should be about as one of the premier programs in the nation.

And if Kiffin called for Barkley to take a knee, you'd say SC lacks a killer instinct to put teams away. It's easy to be a horrible beat reporter just take the opposite position of anything. You suck, Wolf.

Und don't forget, Vulfman, Kiffer callt a timeout right before zat play! Unschportmanlike againsht a vanquisht foe! Zee "jerk Kiffer" returnink?

That last series ruined the game for me. you're up 3 TD's against a hopelessly overmatched opponent, less than a minute left and you call a timeout to throw the ball? Seriously?

I could see it if this was a grudge match agains the Ruins, but Syracuse? Ugg, and when Barks got sacked it made it look even stupider. I am dreading Pac-10 play.

What's wrong with going for the record? Keep playing til the clock runs out, I say. It's not like we were up by 50. Bunch of whiny fans around here.

Maybe he didn't think John Manoogian could drop to one knee or hand the ball off.

Suck it easy Scott. You're as worthless as the team across town. Hope one of these games Barkley throws an errand pass and it smacks right off of your face!

This whole scenario speaks of what Kiffin is about as a person. If he wanted to get Barkley the school record for TDs in a game then fine. Admit to doing so and move on, even though it was a classless move at the time and it could've got Barkley hurt. But don't sit there after the game when you're called on this and throw an assistant coach under the bus. This is the second time this year that he has done something like this, and it speaks to his character as a person. When he does something questionable he blames others or makes statements that deflect the blame onto others. A true leader does not do this. Kiffin, you are the head coach, you are the man in charge of this program! Take responsibility for what goes on in YOUR PROGRAM! In short, GROW UP!

"People are monitoring records". The number is 5, I don't think you need a team statisticians jockeying their iPads in order to keep track of that. Maybe they also keep track of the local media and their obsession with SC covering the spread.

Do the Syracuse players still get orange slices and Capri Suns after the game if they lose by 28?

Unlike my doppelganger who posted earlier, I'm okay with late scores. My only wish would have been to see McNeal run it in, he deserved it after the work he put into that drive.
