About Harbaugh

| | Comments (12) |

Since Jim Harbaugh came up in conversation today at practice, it's worth remembering that former athletic director Mike Garrett could easily have hired him away from Stanford after Pete Carroll left.
The San Francisco 49ers were a mess before Harbaugh arrived. Now they are 5-1. No transition period needed. Imagine what Harbaugh might be doing at USC? It's unlikely you would hear much about probation being a hinderance.

All aboard the Harbaugh spin train...

Easily hired him away? No chance Harbaugh would have taken this job. If Harbaugh was to leave Stanford, it was going to be for an NFL job, not USC, Michigan or any other college program. Why leave Stanford when you have the best QB in the country and low expectations for a school in transition where expectations were sky high? Also, both he and his wife have roots in Palo Alto. This is the reason why he took less money from the 49ers than he could have had from the Dolphins.

I hated Jim Harbaugh when he was at Stanford. But now that he's the 49ers' head coach, I like him. The 49ers have the same player personnel this year that they have had for the past 4 years. The difference is that Harbaugh is smart, he believes in his players, and he doesn't disincentivize making mistakes; rather, he encourages the players to do well and shrugs off the mistakes. He wasn't yelling at his team for making 15 penalties after the win against Detroit. Can you imagine what Kiffin would have done had they won a road game against an undefeated team while making 15 penalties? The penalties would have been all he would have focused on.

Holy Cow, Wolf. You have problems with Kiffin's attitude and lack of personality and you think Harbaugh would fit in at USC? Of course I don't know him personally, but his public persona has always struck me as being a self-important, egotistical prick. I'm sure he would chew you up and spit out the tiny little pieces. The grass is not always greener...

Even before his success with the 49ers I would have loved to see Harbaugh coach the Trojans.

TrojanPete covered basically everything else I was going to say in his first paragraph.

He wouldn't be doing anything at USC, you idiot. He'd be in the NFL ... same as with his career path through Stanford.

Ha Ha. Another moronic thought/statement by the Wolfie. You are so clueless. Everyone with any sports knowledge at all knows Harbaugh was only going to the NFL if he left Stanford. He was not coming to SC so Garrett could not have "easily" hired him.

If he did come to SC I imagine him doing no better then Kiffen is and perhaps even worse since Kiffen can recruit better.

Scott, you are a sour puss. I'd bet Slob's ashes that Harbaugh would have disliked you as much as everyone else in USC Athletics. What a stupid thing to post. You have no idea how Harbaugh would have done here. One thing is for sure, the Alumni base would not have taken to him very quickly. Just one question: Can you name one Head Coach and one Assoc. Athletic Director that likes you?

Scott you are so right, as always...your statement is as true as NOBS loves taking in the ass by his poodle "Fidos" - that sick basTURD.

If Harbaugh could turn 41 point underdog Stanford into a Pac 10 powerhouse that could put 55 on us at home, I have a feeling he would be a success at SC.

Everyone is wrong and right.

For most college coaches, college is 3A ball and the NFL is the Majors. This was always true of PC and it is also true of JH. The 49ers were a perfect fit for JH.

What is not mentioned is that Stanford AD Bob Bowlsby immediately signed JH to a new contract over the weekend 3 days just after JC announced his move. Something was going on in Palo Alto for Bowlsby to move so suddenly.

Both Harbaugh brothers understand the importance of mental toughness in football. It is not a coincidence that the 49ers now have a serious run defense and that Gore is finding success.

I cannot recall any coaches who turned an intellectual weakling university like Northwestern, Duke, or Stanford into such a physical bully as did Harbaugh at Stanford. Amazing whether you like him or not.
