Farmer And Cal
I heard last night that freshman tailback/wide receiver George Farmer would no longer redshirt and Lane Kiffin intended to play him against Cal.
That became more apparent Friday morning when Farmer changed his number from 88 to 8 and spent extra time working on drills after practice concluded.
Kiffin did not deny Farmer would play.
``We've got to look at it this week and see where we're at,'' Kiffin said. ``We'll spend the week to figure it out.''
Farmer said he spoke to the coaches this week.
``They just kept telling me to play hard and do what the coaches tell me to do,'' Farmer said. ``If they need me (to play), I'll do it.''

if farmer plays RB at cal that would be quite a quick turnaround from being a hobbled, red-shirted WR to true frosh playing a different position. his speed at that position does intrigue. we haven't had that kind of threat back there since bush.
Yes, yes, yes. George isn't staying four years, let alone five... Get him on the field as soon as he's ready.
Way to waste a redshirt!
Sounds like fumbles waiting to happen to me...
This is our King of Spades against Mamba!
LEZGO!
Very interesting. Kiffin is obviously trying to make things happen. My hat is off to him and I hope that this works out! I'm often very negative Kiffin, but I find this development exciting.
Short term: This is very exciting news and reason to watch tomorrow.
Long term: Let's all pray this comes up big. If not, then USC is back to square 1.
Dixie,
USC doesn't play tomorrow - Cal game is on Thursday. USC is on a bye-week this week.
I think it is dumb, dumber and dumbest. Farmer won't turn it around alone. Remember the term "freshman mistakes".
Steve,
Thus far, these Gardena kids have shown they're not your average freshmen. Woods is NFL ready (yes, I know he's a SO), Lee isn't far behind, and Farmer is supposedly the best of 'em.
steve49 is right, why would you burn Farmer's redshirt year now if he couldn't show it in practice until now? We really don't need to break in a new running back and the resulting miscues this late in the season. It would have been fine to let him learn against Minnehaha and Syralose. I mean, is Tyler going to sit now?
Gotroy,
No, Tyler won't sit. Farmer won't carry the ball a whole lot (from what we're wing told). But in no way is this "wasting" a redshirt. You really think Farmer's going to stay at SC for five years? I'd say if any RB's RS was wasted, it'd be Carlisle.
