History Lesson

I mentioned this on twitter last week but new UCLA coach Jim L. Mora already faced USC when he was a graduate assistant at Washington. The then-No. 1-ranked Huskies were upset by USC, 16-7 at the Coliseum.
How big an upset was it? Well, Ted Tollner coached the Trojans. So technically Mora starts off 0-1 against his crosstown rival.

  1. That was 1984. It was a great game. The winner went to the Rose Bowl. The big, bad Huskies were looking past SC and figuring out their national title scenarios.

That was one of my favorite SC teams. Not overly talented and coming off a horrendous season in ’83. They weren’t loaded with talent but they were scrappy and found a way to win. Went on to beat Keith Byers & Ohio St in the Rose Bowl.

  2. Further to Globe’s comment, ucla’s last Rose Bowl win came exactly one year after USC defeated Ohio State in that 1985 game. That was a very long time ago…

  3. Good point Rusty. Whereas since that time SC has won the Rose Bowl 6 more times, as well as a victory in the BCS title game.

  4. I WAS THERE ! And I was probably shitfaced as that’s the only way you could watch a Ted Tollner coached team.

  5. That game was also played about three years after the last time RuinedBoob actually touched another woman.

  6. Now where is Ugly Bucket and his ‘sweet scoop’ nonsense when you need him, which is not very often.

That was a truly sweet scoop, Wolf, and we will use this stat against Mora come November.

  7. serious question: when was the last time ucla won a rose bowl? was it much longer ago than when they last won at the coliseum? which was a loooong time ago in itself

  8. OMG!!! the wolfman’s post was supposed to be a tongue in cheek sarcastic remark!! not a referendum on Mora’s coaching ability!! does anyone think a Grad Asst has anything to do with a coaching loss or victory??? maybe an OC or a DC, but a clipboard holder??

don’t forget Kiff has a 30-28 lifetime record as a Head Coach, hardly worth bragging about!!!

you trOXans sound kindda desperate for anything to cling on to with Khalil, Perry and the Pious Passer leaving and the Schollie reduction just starting!!!

  9. @Globe, what??? so does that mean USC has a BCS Title?? really?? oh wait!! that’s right!!! the one they were FORCED TO FORFEIT for cheating, oh yeah! thanks for reminding me!

@How Does, not, that was the year you came out of the closet and you made a formal union with NOBS. You found out very quickly that your dick was too little to please a woman, so you turned to cucumbers, and the rest is history, you and NOBS lived happily together for ever and ever.

  10. Given the talent of USC’s coaches, when an athlete/coach ratio is reduced, there’s more teaching going on at USC. The result are an inordinate amount of talent moving on the the NFL. If you’re a national recruit considering USC, it’s a factor. Converting his talent to actual cash.

And, how many bRuins are considering early entry?

  11. DREAM TEAM!!! The monopoly is officially……………………continuing for many years to come.

  12. Man, SC has won a bunch of Rose Bowls since UCLA’s last RB crown. But then again, it’s been slapped with cheater sanctions a bunch of times too! Cheat ON!

  13. BruinRob,
It’s laughable how you live your life’s victories through any shred of negative USC publicity. USC was forced to give up the BCS version of the 2004 National Title due to an event which took place 80 miles from campus. Boy, you sure make a good point about Reggie Bush’s step father levering Reggie’s name & notoriety to gain personal advantages…the USC Football team gained a real competitive advantage from that debacle! We know, that you know, that’s BS. Pete Carroll had 700 athletes who came through the program when he captained the ship & the NCAA spent 5 years to come up with 1 incidence to slap a “Lack of Institutional control” label on USC. Do yourself a favor, take a look at the NCAA panel which slapped the sanctions on USC…included Miami AD who runs the dirtiest program in College Football. Your cheating comments lack substance and illustrate your envy & jealousy for a strong, successful & Traditional College Football program.

  15. RB4SC –

You make a very compelling argument and are spot-on. But unfortunately, the Boob’s reading comprehension skills and critical thinking is that of a 6 year old. I wouldn’t encourage you to do this, but for the Boob to compehend the complex issues you describe, you would need to reduce it stick figures engaging in perverse actions. Even then, he may not understand as he is quite dumb and prone to emotional outbursts.

  16. RB4SC, thank you for your civil post, however I must disagree with you.
    1. Reggie Bush registered his vehicle with the university on December 4th, 2004. So the institution was well aware that Reggie had a 1992 Toyota p/u and now a new Impala pimped out.
    2. RB coach Todd McNair was well aware of the relationship with the two agents…there are photos of McNair with the group at a night club in Hollywood.
    3. Michaels claims to have a recorded conversation in which Carroll instructs Michaels to make sure the “lease” papers of the home the Bushes lived in “was straight” to avoid any future problems…Michaels offered the recording to the NCAA investigation committee and Michaels was told it would not be permissible evidence because the recording was done without Pete Carroll’s consent, so Pete Carroll knew about it.

I know having thus on your team is not illegal as long as they have passing grades in school, but clearly Pete Carroll had ZERO control of his football team, as it was clearly demonstrated my MANY arrests to his players, including 6 players getting arrested for RAPE and somehow in each case the case was dropped by the victims, I wonder if you or I would have been as lucky – my guess is NOT – something fishy went on, can you say PAYING OFF THE VICTIMS by the boosters??

Or perhaps USC does own the LAPD as Rey Maualuga said after beating up a 150 pound weakling at a Halloween party before getting arrested for Assault and battery? Rey Maualuga

There were many other arrests to the USC players during the Carroll era, I just chose to post these…my point is this, I don’t know of ANY other school other than Miami U to have all these arrests and still keep these thugs on the team…had USC or Carroll done what any other decent program or decent coach would do…all these THUGS would have been kicked off the team, and I wonder if they had, how many less game would USC have won?? I’m not even listing violations USC didn’t even get slapped for, in having Leinart’s dad pay for DeWayne Jarrot’s rent, which was another violation….or Carroll using Reggie Bush to get on the phone with Joe McKnight to assure him that Bush never did anything wrong, and that USC would never be on probation, that was a violation – McKnight two days later said he “misspoke” yeah right.

Furthermore yes, USC has a loooooong history of cheating since 1903, look at this aritcle. Hiring player in order to beat Pomona Pitzer. http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jun/19/local/la-me-then-20100619

I HOPE YOU ALL ENJOYED THIS “HISTORY LESSON”.

  17. How Does, you really have nothing of substance to offer on these blogs, other than being a little pussy instigator.

In my best Dos Equis (XX beer) man commercial voice: “I may not always post in a civil manner, but when I do, it’s to blow you trOJans out of the water…stay envious, my friends”

  18. Good Lord, I see ucklaRob or is it uckla Moron’s name, and I pass over the diatribe. Same with Ugly Bucket, although occasionally he makes sense, about 1 time in 20. What egotistcal, out of touch idiots these ucklans are.

If a leaf strikes the ground in the forest, and no one is around to see or hear it, has it made a sound?

  19. How, all of us enjoy your posts. Keep it up. There are a few posters that drive us MADD! Most of the bRuin posters URN to be as witty as you. Fight On!

  20. I would like to note that the clarion call of the UCLA fan is of NCAA rules issues, since the actual results on the football field seldom favor them. Why win it on the football field when you can win it in the NCAA boardroom?

  21. BruinRob,

    1) You make the claim that McNair knew of Bush’s arrangement with the agents. Where do you get your information from? Lloyd Lake’s attorney said that he wasn’t sure if McNair knew of any business arrangement and Michael Michaels’ attorney said he couldn’t find any evidence that anyone at USC knew of any arrangement. Just because they hung out one night and snapped a photo does not mean that they know each others’ business affairs.

    2) You did it again–the recorded conversation bit. I’ve called you out on it several times. I have asked you to cite your source. Where do you get this idea that Pete Carroll called Michael Michaels and told him to get the paperwork straight and that Michaels recorded this conversation? You keep telling me that you would research it and let me know but you never did research because you created this idea in one of your wet dreams.

Here’s how it went–a New Era rep. by the name of Lew Campbell claims that Lamar Griffin told him that Pete Carroll once called him to inquire about the lease arrangement they had. Griffin told him everything was fine and Carroll told him to make sure the “paperwork was straight.” Lake says he was in Griffin’s presence when the call happened and corroborated Campbell’s claim. All this means is that Carroll wanted to make sure there was documentation surrounding the lease agreement. There was no recorded conversation. You made that up and I’ve asked you to cite your sources and you won’t. If you do a google search on an alleged recorded conversation, all you come up with are your bull sh*t made-up posts.

    3) You still haven’t explained the discrepancy in your alleged wife’s alleged death. Lately, you’ve stated she died 20 years ago. Last month, it was 19. Earlier this year, it was more than 20 years ago. In July, 2010, it was 16 years ago. Can you please explain to me the thought process here?
