Cal Is Cal

| | Comments (36) |

If you read this blog, you know that is our standard explanation for why Cal is not better in sports with its sometimes apathetic attitude toward its programs, especially football (Jeff Tedford's seems to never be on the hot seat).
That became apparent again Monday when Cal assistant Tosh Lupoi left for Washington. His departure immediately jeopardized possibly the Pac-12's best recruiting class as defensive lineman Ellis McCarthy and safety Shaq Thompson are now considered up for grabs after committing to the Bears last week. Cal could also lose highly rated defensive end defensive end Aziz Shittu, who visits USC this weekend. The Bears were also in the final three for former USC commit Arik Armstead, who is also looking at Notre Dame and Auburn. Other recruits, like linebacker Michael Barton, could also leave.
In other words, the Bears' recruiting class could be in shambles because it allowed Lupoi to leave. Yes, his pay increased dramatically but Cal's decision not to try and match Washington's offer (reportedly more than $500,000) showed that Cal remains Cal.
What about USC? It believes it can land McCarthy. The Trojans never felt Thompson liked them that much, however.

Looks like some doors have opened up. Lets seal the deal on some of these guys....coffee is for closers only

Great. Just what we need--Shaq Thompson to open up his recruitment. I'd had enough of his entitled attitude and thought he was going to shut up but now he's going to inject himself into the center of attention. This recruiting game is silly and he's milking it for all he can.

SCTuro Author Profile Page said:

I guess you have to give Sark some credit for not sitting on his hands, and making things happen. Not doubt part of the discussion with Lupoi was, how many kids can he bring with him.

dtksr1 Author Profile Page said:

I hope you are correct in your hunches Scott. At least for a few of these recruits. SC needs defensive players who have the ability to hold their own at the line of scrimmage and not give up cheap yardage.

Cal's recruiting class, from the penthouse to the outhouse in one day, no way they keep that class together and no way they all end up in soggy Seattle.

What has Cal done recently or ever to warrant getting top recruits?

Question, how long will it take for our current hatred of insufferable Oregon fans on the internet boards to shift to newly minted insufferable dawg fans?

@Trojanfan: I love that movie. "You can't close shit, you are shit, hit the bricks, pal."

I tried to tell you guys that Ellis had no interest in SUC but you just couldn't handle the truth. SUC on sucsters.

dcard1097 Author Profile Page said:

And I'm sure many people have tried to tell you "spedjones".....that no matter who UCLA recruits onto their team this year, you guys will always be a shit program that gets stomped on by USC lol

50-0 wasnt enough? Or do you want it even worse next year?

spedjones Author Profile Page said:

Haha yes, pretend that things don't ever change. Not all that long agp that UCLA owned SUC for almost a decade too. We just plucked the guy most considered sc's most important recruit. Oh, and you won't be getting Lutui either. And I'd be worried bout Seymour now too...don't think he and Ellis don't talk!

Sped, UCLA owned SC in the 90s, what do you have to show for it? You're still getting crushed in the overall series and won ZERO natl titles during that time. LMAO.
Mediocre on though..

USC - 714 Author Profile Page said:

Hahaha and why exactly are you here spedjones??

Can we say...inferiority complex?

Dont worry bud, yeah things do change. Perhaps UCLA will go from a below average team to a happy average team. Granted that will be the peak of their success, I'm sure it would still make you very proud.

McCarthy just switched his commitment to UCLA. Based from what I listened through a podcast, one of the rumblings why McCarthy may have snubbed USC and Oregon is due to competition...Like I said before, you'll always find that one king in a team no matter how lousy they are. When you come to USC, you're going to want to have the attitude of becoming the king of all kings; that's one of many reasons why SC has such a stellar football program.

@Troy

I was kind of thinking the same thing. USC already has 4 excellent and young defensive tackles on the roster, 2 of them are redshirt freshmen to-be, and the other 2 are sophomores who will most likely be the starters.
If McCarthy wants to go to a school where he'd most likely play/start right away and not have much competition, he may have made the right choice for himself

ThaiMex Author Profile Page said:

McCarthy's father is quoted as saying the southern cal recruiting staff was UNIMPRESSIVE, and based on conversations Ellis had with friends CURRENTLY on the $ucks football team, "there are bad things going on right now". Kennard, Greene, Uko, Tavai, and Howard as potential starters? DL Looks thin without Armstead and Armstead. Heck, james Boyd would be an improvement over this bunch. (Kiffy would have given his left testicle for McCarthy...since Mono doesn't have any)
but fite on though LIMBO U!

TrojanPete Author Profile Page said:

McCarthy's father was UCLA all the way. He even said he tried steering his kid that way since he was young. His father is close with Demetrice Martin. My guess is that ThaiMex is making up the quote. Care to share your source?

ThaiMex Author Profile Page said:

Here's the quote...The SOURCE is VERY PUBLIC (not a pay site).
Ellis also got a heads up from a current SC player that "bad things were going down" and he might want to go elsewhere.
I'll let you figure out where it was quoted....Maybe you want to start with this thing called GOOGLE?
BTW...Go ahead and TRASH McCarthy, like you've done to Armstead, Armstead, Teo, Burfect, DAT, and every other HIGH PROFILE RECRUIT who has REJECTED southern cal. There's no Grapes like SOUR GRAPES! (how does this bunch taste?)
fite on though

dcard1097 Author Profile Page said:

Hey "ThaiMex" (aka assclown), whoever the fuck you are...

If USC's recruiting staff is so "unimpressive" then why is it that even with limited scholarships we will STILL have a much better recruiting class than UCLA?? HAHAHAHA.

And I'm sorry...did you say LIMBO U?? How about National Title Contenders??...yeah that sounds more accurate.

You can have Ellis McCarthy, hell, your little slapdick program can use all the help it can get.

Now get lost dipshit, unless you want to reminisce about that 50-0 debacle...

Thaimex, I dont think you are very educated on USC's D-line because:

1) I have no idea who "Howard" is

and

2) Their D-Line looks like this:

Defensive Ends - Devon Kennard, Wes Horton, Morgan Breslin, Devante Wilson, Greg Townsend Jr, Kevin Greene

Defensive Tackles - George Uko, JR Tavai, Antwan Woods, Christian Heyward

This does not even count any potential D-Line recruits coming in as true freshmen.
Oh and majority of USC's D-linemen are either 4 or 5 star (obviously star rating must mean a lot to you since you speak so highly on McCarthy without even seeing him play one college snap)
Add in the fact that all these guys are being developed by Coach O...D-Line can potentially be a strength on the team next year.
I dont think McCarthy would have redshirted at USC, but he would have also been very unlikely to play any "meaningful" snaps next year
And the reason why you are so vague about your source on the quote "there are bad things going down right now" is because you are full of BS.
Looks like you came to a gun fight armed with nothing more than a butter knife. Try again.

Ellis McCarthy switches commitment
January, 17, 2012 Jan 17 12:12 AM ET ESPNU 150 defensive tackle Ellis McCarthy (Monrovia, Calif.) decommitted from California Monday night and is now set to play for UCLA, according to ESPN's Greg Biggins.

Thai,

Why were you up at 2:19am posting hate on a Southern Cal site or are you working out of Monte Carlo again this week?

oh brother, the blog police is back.

two questions for Jethro: did you wait intentionally wait until after 7am to post your comment?

and, are you nervous about having to leave the blog when Shabazzz signs with UCLA??

you can always to the UCLA blog. a little boring, but the people are smarter.

Anybody else find ThaiMex's alleged quote? Did a search, didn't find anything. It most likely only exists in his head.

I even told you clowns that Ed O's home visit a month or so ago was a bomb and nobody believed me. Dopes. Nothing about SC appealed to McCarthy.

1. No

2. I never made such a vow. You did as Count Smakula. Don't you remember?

Question for you: Why are you answering for ThaiMex?

BruinRob Author Profile Page said:

I told you guys that Ellis McCarthy would be a Bruin, McCarthy's dad is good friends with Klemm and Martin.

@Troy, you heard in of the podcasts that "McCarthy snubbed competition"? that is is sour grapes. And I could never understand why so many kids that were star running backs would go to USC when USC would have about 5 star RBs already on the roster...that "compete" word is used too loosely now a days.

If I'm a 5-star player, I'm gonna choose a school that I can go into and be contribute as a starter, and if that school is one like UCLA that is always on T.V. and at least 5 nationally televised games, and on the brink of becoming a really good program again, and that will be considered as one of the teams competing for a Pac-12 title, why not UCLA?? a great coaching staff, a top-11 in the world academic institution, beautiful campus, beautiful girs...the home of Jackie Robinson, the home of the school that featured the first African-American back field in college football for a non-black school...why not UCLA? And as ThaiMex said, don't be surprised, if two more high-profile recruits announce they will be Bruins.

QB Kiel has now committed to his 3rd school. McCarthy has committed twice. They say 3rd times a charm. So guess he signs with USC on LOI day.
