Speaking of Mel Kiper, remember how he said during Matt Barkley's senior year of high school (and first spring practice at USC) that Barkley would be the No. 1 pick in three years?
So why did Kiper list Barkley as the No. 6 pick overall before the quarterback announced he was returning for his senior season?

This is an easy answer Scott. Barkley decided to come back for a year rather than sign with an agent friend of Kiper's and ride Kiper's ranking to a big payday. Kiper is basically an atroturfer of the draft board, rallying fan sentiment to trump what teams at the top of the draft really need.

LOL.

The year is young, but this post could place well at Wolfman 2012.

BTW

Scott, you voted Boise #1 most of last season. So why did you pick Ok. State at the end?

Globe Author Profile Page said:

Gee Scott, maybe something has changed in the last 3 years. Dayne Crist and Kyle Prater probably aren't projected as high as they once were either.

Because Kiper is a bigger douchebag than Charlie Buckshat and bRUIN Nob put together

LOL. Wolfie really reaching to keep us entertained as LOI day approaches. I don't really think 3-year-old predictions are binding, Scott.

Ah, because Kiper was wrong. You are such a d-bag Wolf to slam a prediction that was pretty accurate by all intents.

#1 QB dropping all the way to #2 QB. Wow, Kiper sure was WAY OFF with that prediction FOUR years ago. If not for Andrew Luck really defying his recruiting rankings Kiper would have been dead on.

By the way, even though he was technically wrong, Kiper's bold prediction may only be off by a year. Predicting the #1 overall pick from a pool of high school players is pretty damn impressive. Anyone remember Beno Cook's prediction about ND's Ron Powlus?

Correction: THREE years ago. Not FOUR.

Wolf, I hope you weren't planning on attending this year's Kiperpalooza: A Celebration of Mel Kiper, at the Bristol Ramada Inn. Your name will not be on the list.

By the way I'm not a Kiper apologist, just a Wolf hater. You think ESPN would bring Wolf on as a guest to assess the status of USC's program or their recruiting exploits? Didn't think so.

Im as big a Trojan fan as there is.... Actualy met Dj Morgan, dion Bailey and marquise lee last week, Taylor Mays just yesterday so was actualy a sweet week for me.... But I'm pretty realistic... Matt Barkely is an amazing qb and he deserves as much praise as he gets... However I don't think he's better NFL prospect then Andrew luck besides the obvious luck is bigger faster stronger... He had far less to work with talent wise around him and 100 less pass attempts then barkely and their numbers weren't far apart. So he's the obvious first pick the the next few teams drafting don't need a qb... I actualy think that played a part in Matt coming back... If barkely isn't the 2nd qb take he might fall ala Aaron Rogers or Brady Quinn did even though they were clear cut top 5 available players... Teams just did not have a need.

Big fan of Andrew Luck. Luck is more mobile, bigger, and prob. throws a better deep ball than Barkley. Who is the better QB? Luck played in a smash-mouth run oriented attack with few playmakers on the outside, but a solid group of TEs to throw to. Barkley had better outside threats but less threat of a running game. Either way, there's little question that Barkley was required to take more risks with the football than was asked of Luck and the scheme under which Barkley played was more complex from the QB's perspective.

How come? We'll expect Kiper to answer that just as soon as you explain all of your much worse predictions. Honestly, the man wasn't that far off. He should have said 4 years.

Pointing out a failed prediction by Mel Kiper isn't exactly a difficult task. More crack reporting from our favorite USC beat writer.

W.E.B. Dupree Author Profile Page said:

Mr. Snipes, should I bet on red or black?

there is a simple explanation: it's because the Pious Passer has NEVER LED HIS TEAM TO A COMEBACK* VICTORY!!!

sure PP has talent, but quite simply, no guts.

item: he turned into a quivering pile of goo whenever Vontaze looked at him funny!! all it took was a little shove at some HS allstar game and he OWNED the Pious Passer!! the Pious One was so psyched out, he even threw Vontaze a near pick-six with no receivers in sight!!!

that'll be $39.99 for the inside dope, dopes.

(* per wolfman, OSU didn't count)

BruinRob Author Profile Page said:

Scott, that is a pretty dumb question!! is Keiper supposed to honor his word of 4 years ago, when he clearly sees Barkley was not the top QB?

LanceKiffin Author Profile Page said:

Yeah, what a boneheaded call, he looked at a kid in high school and predicted he'd be number one and then he ended up being ranked sixth. I mean, five slots?! What a moron. He should be replaced by Scott "Nostradamus" Wolf. If there's one thing that's a constant, it is high school kids always live up to their potential and pan out exactly as predicted in high school. I mean, just look at the star studded career of Morrel Presley.

Speaking of Scott Wolf, do you remember when he said C.J. Spiller was a lock for USC? So why did Spiller sign with Clemson?

TrojanInMichigan Author Profile Page said:

The thing with the qb position in the draft is that every year there are at least 1-2 guys who become "potential" guys and development scouts wet themselves over those guys on draft day. If a QB can wing a ball 65 yards or throw missiles across the body or make accurate throws despite poor technique - he'll probably be taken top 15 on draft day despite not proving much in college.

These type of guys - like Tyler Bray at Tennessee - will probably supplant Barkley next year. But Barkley - unlike Jimmy Clausen or Mitch Mustain or Jarret Lee - has held up his reputation throughout, a pretty remarkable thing in the age of Jr High Rivals Rankings.

And for the record how have most of those "pro-potential" QBs turned out? Mediocre to worthless almost across the board: Flacco, Gabbert, Ponder, Freeman, Cutler, even Jamarcus Russell (in terms of stats).

Charlie Bucket, do some research, my man. Not only did Barkley lead a comeback at the Horseshoe completing passes to Joe McKnight, Damian Williams, and Anthony McCoy (as well as rushing for two 4th down conversions) in the final drive against Ohio State, but he also led a late drive that season against Oregon State at the Coliseum. See here, per ESPN:

Oct 24, 2009: USC beat Oregon State 42-36.

The Trojans (No. 7 BCS, No. 4 AP) won that fight with one final drive by their revitalized offense, which relished a rare chance to bail out their usually formidable defense in a 42-36 victory Saturday night.

MB7 4 HEISMAN! AUUUUUUUUUU-WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Give your real name. Post on Michael Lev's board under your facebook account. Hypocrisy, thy name is Bucket.

NOBS is an insider and, as an insider, knows which hotels the athletic department VIPs stay at on road trips to exotic places like Pullman, WA. I have been retweeted by MB7. Scott, our host, is an AP voter. And Boring Rob, who seems to have gone missing after the Kraft Eat Kids Bowl, carries his dead wife's ashes from blog to blog. DId I miss anyone?
