Whether USC assistant Jason Hart stays or goes to Washington could be resolved by tomorrow. The fact Hart is from Southern California gives USC an advantage but it’s still too close to call.
Does it matter that Sam Darnold hsa thrown five interceptions in four spring football practices? He has a young group of receivers. The offensive line has some new starters. And Darnold is entrenched as the No. 1 guy, so maybe he can take more chances.
It’s notable, however, because Darnold threw one interception in his first fall training camp and spring practice. He didn’t throw his second interception until a week into last year’s fall camp. His career total of interceptions was two when Clay Helton named Max Browne the starter. So five interceptions is unusual, if nothing else.
Pete Carroll and Norm Chow were at USC Pro Day today. Now that brings back memories.Meanwhile, offensive tackle Chad Wheeler did 17 reps on the benchpress of 225 pounds. That’s an improvement from his NFL combine performance of 15 reps. But the 17 reps would have still been the second-worst mark among offensive linemen at the combine.
Here’s my analysis on the situation facing Clay Helton when picking a No. 2 QB next season.
Excerpt: For USC coach Clay Helton, there are three options: He can use redshirt freshman Matt Fink, who is unproven but targeted to be the backup next season. He can insert highly regarded true freshman Jack Sears and burn his redshirt year. Or he can move wide receiver Jalen Greene back to quarterback.
No one might admit it right now, but Greene is currently the best quarterback of the bunch. He knows the offense, is the most athletic and possesses a strong arm. But Greene said Tuesday he wants to play wide receiver. Would Helton risk tossing him into a game at quarterback without practice time? Full story here
Here’s a photo gallery from Tuesday’s sometimes wet practice.
Some news today was Jalen Greene (10) saying he wants to be a full-time wide receiver and Clay Helton saying he would allow to stay there while Matt Fink and Jack Sears battle it out to be the No. 2. But then Helton compared Greene to Antwaan Randle El, a college quarterback who became a wide receiver in the NFL and threw a TD pass in a Super Bowl for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“The beauty about (Greene) is if needed, he could step into that (quarterback) role just like that,” Helton said.
As I’ve said before, Greene right now is the best No. 2 QB.
