USC scored less than 20 points?
Read below for the Answer:
Dec. 25, 2001 in a 10-6 loss to Utah.
55 yards rushing. That's about all you need to know about USC's offensive performance today. That's both a reflection on the Trojans offense and the Bruins defense.
Bruins defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker just became a hot commodity with the way his unit played today.
The crowd isn't leaving. They're actually getting louder....
What a win for the Bruins! The fans are pouring out of the stands onto the field. Flash bulbs are popping. This is UCLA's biggest win in a long time.
USC can't stop the clock. After the punt, the Trojans should have about two plays left to get in the end zone if PR Desmond Reed doesn't dance around too much.
It's very simple. USC needs a stop on this play or its national title hopes are over.
USC has all of its timeouts left. The Trojans have to get a stop here to have any shot left....
Another tipped ball, another loss? It sure looks that way. Eric McNeal comes up with the tip and the pick. UCLA has the ball at its own 20 with 110 to go.
Yep, that's all USC has been able to muster so far today
USC has all three of its timeouts left in case you are wondering. UCLA has 2.
USC goes for it on 4th and 1. Looks like they got it, but we'll need to see the spot. The ball needed to cross the 39 and from here, it looks like it did.
we're under 5 minutes here and this one's heading for a great finish..
Florida just went up 17-0 on Arkansas. Even if USC pulls this one out, the Trojans lose the PR war today...
UCLA just went from the 2 yard line back to the 13 in consecutive plays. They'll settle for another field goal by Justin Medlock to go up 13-9. The Bruins have moved the ball well in the second half, but haven't been able to get into the end zone.
We'll see if it costs them later....
UCLA should get at least three points out of this drive. A touchdown makes it a two-possession game.
UCLA stuffs Gable on a sweep. Huge play for the Bruins. Give credit to Alterraun Verner and Christian Taylor.
Carroll's going to go for it.....
Sorry to bring it up Trojans fans, But now that the teams are switching sides for the fourth quarter, USC's going toward the same end zone as it was the last time it had 4th and 2 at the Rose Bowl....
Wow, what a shift. Cowan throws a backwards pass towards Michael Pitre, who can't hang on. USC recovers and will start from the Bruins 45. Is this the break USC needs to get back into the game?
UCLA about half a yard short. You're the coach, what would you do here? Kick the easy field goal and go up 10-9 with 5:45 left in the 3rd quarter or go for it on 4th and 1 from the 5 yard line?
I'm curious what the Bruin fans out there think....
And for the SC fans out there, what do you think Carroll would've done?
All of a sudden, Patrick Cowan has found his stride. He's 4 of 5 for 42 yards on this drive. UCLA seems a lot more aggressive on offense once it crosses midfield.
Just saved 6 points. Ryan Graves was heading for a TD on that last punt return but Maiava brought him down with a good arm tackle. USC's special teams are opening a door for UCLA...
Just got a question about USC's offense in the second half. It detinitely looks like the Trojans are trying to stretch the field with their vertical passing game more this half.
USC was focused on establishing the run early, but Booty's been airing it out in the second half. That should open up more of the underneath routes for Smith, Gable, Davis...
Aaron Perez just hit a 62-yard punt. USC is pinned deep in its own territory. Trojans will start from its own 7 yard line
Just when I was about to compliment USC's special teams ... Greg Woidneck shanks a terrible, 24-yard punt.
Who've thought this one would be a defensive struggle with the way both teams have been scoring lately?
UCLA has just 34 passing yards, but the fleet feet of QB Patrick Cowan are keeping the Bruins moving. His mobility has been a big asset against the aggressive USC defensive line.
USC needs to get Dwayne Jarrett involved. He had just one catch for 8 yards in the first half. He really hasn't been targeted much either.
USC takes the lead on a 1-yard plunge by CJ Gable. Trojans lead 9-7.
Seriously though, did anyone predict a 9-7 score at the half?
OK, let's be upfront about this. I'm a Stanford grad, so I'm keeping an eye on the Stanford-Cal game while I watch UCLA-USC. Needless to say, I wasn't all that optimistic about Stanford's chances today. But it's Big Game, so you never know.
Sure enough, the rivalry has brought out the best in Stanford. Cal has a slim 23-17 lead late in the third quarter, but Stanford appears to be driving.
Just another reminder that all rules go out the window in rivalry week.
USC is now 0 for 4 on third down conversions....
USC just got on the board with a safety after a UCLA lineman was called for holding in the end zone.
Dwayne Jarrett has yet to catch a ball today, but he just made a great grab on a fumble by Dale Thompson. That could've been a game-changer, but Jarrett was in the right place at the right time to save the day.
After two straight inside runs from the 1 yard line (Moline on 1st down, Markey on 2nd down) are stuffed at the line of scrimmage, Dorrell calls Cowan's number on 3rd and goal and he gets it into the end zone with a nice cut back off a roll out to the right side.
Cowan rushed for 55 of the 91 yards on that drive. He had 136 yards rushing coming into the game.
UCLA strikes first, 7-0
UCLA's got a nice drive going, eating up over 7 minutes off the clock. Patrick Cowan has rushed for 54 yards on three carries. The Trojans are going to have to contain him better.
Expect Chris Markey to carry the ball A LOT today. So far, he hasn't been very effective. But UCLA seems committed to establishing the run, especially when they're pinned deep in their own territory.
USC is now 0-for-2 on 3rd down conversions. Booty's pass to McFoy was tipped at the line of scrimmage and fell short. UCLA is getting good pressure on Booty. He's been flushed out of the pocket several times already.
Two drives, two 3-and-outs for the Bruins' offense. So far, the Bruins show no signs of being able to move the ball on USC's defense. On the last drive, UCLA even called a running play on 3rd and 19 from their own 22 yard line. Chris Markey lost a yard.
Christ Horton comes up with a key stop. He met USC's Chauncey Washington behind the line of scrimmage and stopped him on 4th and 1 from the UCLA 31 yard line. Pete Carroll almost always goes for the first down on 4th-and-short once he gets inside the 35. The Bruins win this battle.
Just got a question about the make up of the crowd here in Pasadena. Since it's a UCLA home game, there are considerably more Bruin ans here. I'd say its about 70-30 UCLA-USC. The Trojan fans are sitting in the end zones. Before the game, USC left red and gold pom-poms on the seats behind the USC band, so the fans sitting there are going crazy.
Christian Taylor drops what should've been an interception on Booty's first pass of the day. Booty caught a big break on that one. If Taylor hung on, UCLA would've had the ball inside the SC 30 yard line.
Patrick Cowan overthrows Marcus Everett over the middle on 3rd and 8, Bruins go quickly on the first series.
Troy Van Blarcom is off to a good start. After failing to reach the end zone on seven of his eight kickoffs last week (he was bothered by a sore hip) Van Blarcom puts the opening kickoff into the end zone. Bruins will start from the 20.
Hey everyone, Ramona Shelburne here, filling in for Vincent Bonsignore. I'll be hosting the live game blog for today's game. Feel free to write in and ask questions anytime. I'll do my best to answer throughout the game.
We're just about ready for kickoff. The stadium is about 95 percent full. A bit surprising for such a big game. But this is LA, right?
