''Just like football''

That's what UCLA fans chanted after the game. They haven't been able to use that chant in quite some time.
Lorenzo Mata on why UCLA was able to rally from a 10-point deficit: ``We just don't panic. We just fought back.''
Said Arron Afflalo, who had the game-winning shot: ``No matter what the score is, we had 22 seconds to get the job done.''
Afflalo made an offbalance jumper with 4.7 seconds left to win it.

Darren Collison led UCLA with 17 points, and Afflalo had 15. Nick Young had 14 for USC.
Taj Gibson played all 40 minutes for the Trojans and had nine points, four fouls, four blocks, eight rebounds and three turnovers. USC's Abdoulaye N'diaye had four points, seven rebounds and one block in nine minutes,
That's it from the Galen Center.

UCLA wins

USC did not get off a good shot. The Trojans struggled in the backcourt against UCLA's defense and Gabe Pruitt could only get up a long, WAY short attempt from halfcourt.
UCLA 65, USC 64.
What a finish!

Unbelievable finish...and it's not over

Down by three, USC needed a 3-pointer to tie. Young was open on the baseline and made the three, but he was fouled on the play by Darren Collison. His three tied the game with 22.9 seconds left, and Young made the free throw.
USC 64, UCLA 63, 22.9 seconds
Big shot after big shot!
With the clock winding down, Arron Afflalo just nailed a jumper in the lane with 4.7 seconds left.
UCLA 65, USC 64, 4.7 seconds left

Still not over

Gabe Pruitt just made a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 63-60.
UCLA fans just started chanting ``U-C-L-A'' during a timeout but the Trojan band has now outdueled them.
USC 63, UCLA 60, 39 seconds left

wow

ucla just went on an 8-1 run, with three of those points by Lorenzo Mata and five by Afflalo.
Nick Young had a one-and-one and he missed the free throw, then stood at the line slamming his arms in disgust. Had he not worried about the miss, he might have got the rebound, but Michael Roll grabbed it just in front of him.
Then Lorenzo Mata had a putback to put UCLA up 63-57 , 51 seconds left

Bonus

With 5:26 left, both teams are in the free throw bonus situation. USC's Daniel Hackett and Taj Gibson each just missed the front end of a one-and-one.
Russell Westbrook had a shot blocked by Taj Gibson. Gibson got the rebound, then Westbrook made a silly mistake and fouled at him trying to take a stab at the ball.
Afflalo just made two free throws.
USC 55, UCLA 55, 3:57 left second half
Check that. Afflalo just came off a screen and hit a 3-pointer from the top of the arc.
UCLA 58, USC 55, 3:48 left second half
It's UCLA's second lead of the game. The first was at 17-16 in the first half.

What?

There have been some interesting calls in this game, to be sure. Bodies have been flying on the court. Lorenzo Mata fell with a thud heard around the stadium. Nick Young just fell, along with Russell Westbrook on an inbounds play.
USC 55, UCLA 52, 7:13 left second half

Run, run, run

USC made a run, UCLA made one and 'SC just made another.
Darren Collison hit back-to-back 3-pointers for UCLA to cut the lead to three points at 42-38. After a Nick Young jumper and two free throws by Collison, Lodrick Stewart nailed a 3-pointer and Ndiaye - who played just five minutes in the first half - scored on a move inside over Mata.
USC 49, UCLA 40, 11:53 second half

Team huddle

Instead of going to the bench to get instructions from their coaches, USC's five players that were in the game huddled near midcourt. They just built a 10-point lead and figured they'd talk about it amongst themselves, until an assistant coach came out to midcourt and hurried them back to the bench for a proper timeout.
USC 42, UCLA 32, 15:16 left second half

Another upset?

USC has a seven-point lead as is on a 7-0 run right now.
UCLA was undefeated and the top-ranked team in the country until a loss at Oregon last week. The Bruins could lose two consecutive games. Remember, USC beat UCLA last year, too. It was a loss that changed the Bruins' season as it went on to win its next 12 games before losing to Florida in the final.
USC 39, UCLA 32, 15:47 second halfCheck that!
USC's Gabe Pruitt hit another 3-pointer - falling down in the process.
USC 42, UCLA 32, 15:32 left second half

Another sighting

Lakers owner Jerry Buss is here, too.

Arron Afflalo hit consecutive 3-pointers to cut USC's lead to one. He picked up his third foul at 18:05 and then missed a 3-pointer.
Lodrick Stewart just faked Michael Roll on a shot attempt, then cruised through the lane and made a shot on a finger roll.
All these fouls really could hurt UCLA down the stretch.
USC 36, UCLA 32, 16:48 left second half

Stellar Sharman

The No. 11 jersey of former basketball great Bill Sharman was just retired at halftime. Sharman, wearing a black argyle sweater and black pants, donned a Trojans jacket presented by athetic director Mike Garrett and was called ``a champion of the people.'' His No. 11 jersey was retired.

Speaking of No. 11, Daniel Hackett was wearing No. 25. Why, you ask? Well, the jersey was just retired. Hackett is now wearing No. 25.

USC leads

UCLA might be the favorite, but USC is playing well in front of the sellout crowd. USC's Taj Gibson had a block on Mbah a Moute down the stretch to get fans going.
With 11 seconds left before halftime, Gabe Pruitt fouled Darren Collison. Collison was just dribbling at the top of the key and trying to run the clock down when Pruitt literally put his hand on his face.
Collison made two free throws to cut the lead to 31-26 at halftime.
USC missed a shot on the other end and Michael Roll's last-second hurl across nearly entire length of the court hit the rim.
USC 31, UCLA 25, halftime

Marcus Allen

Marcus Allen isn't just a football fan. He's here at the USC-UCLA game, too.
USC 31, UCLA 24, 45 seconds halftime

The good, the bad and the bench

Lorenzo Mata just had a putback slam dunk after a missed shot by Mbah a Moute. It was a nice play. But on the defensive end, he just picked up his third foul and is back on the bench.
USC made consecutive 3-pointers by Lodrick Stewart and Dwight Lewis for an eight-point lead.
USC 31, UCLA 24, 1:12 left first half
This place is L-O-U-D

Hack

Daniel Hackett just picked up his second foul guarding Arron Afflalo, UCLA's leading scorer, with 4:31 left. Hackett slammed both hands on the Galen Center court in disgust.
USC had a five point lead but Lorenzo Mata cut it to three on a 15-foot jumper.
USC 22, UCLA 19, 4:14 left first half

Sloppy

Should be interesting to see how many turnovers the Bruins have had when we get the halftime stats. They're really sloppy. UCLA's man-to-man defense creates an average of 15.8 turnovers, which was 18 at one point this season.
USC has been running the fastbreak well. The Trojans are more patient on offense, too. USC just got a bastbreak bucket from Young.
USC 22, UCLA 17, 4:27 left first half

Traveler

Taj Gibson just committed two consecutive turnovers on traveling calls.

UCLA's Mbah a Moute just gave UCLA its first lead of the game on a 3-pointer from the left wing, but USC got it right back on a Gibson bucket.
USC's Gibson and Abdoulaye N'diaye just combined for a block on a Mbah a Moute shot. But Mbah a Moute had the presence of mind to stay with the play and track down the ball.

USC 18, UCLA 17, 7:29 first half

Taj

Taj Gibson, the freshman New York, has had a banner year. He just scored his first field goal on a drive to the basket around Ryan Wright and made a reverse layup.
UCLA has yet to lead in this game, although it tied it at 10 and 12.
USC 14, UCLA 12, 10:44 first half

Foul trouble

Michael Roll, starting for the injured Josh Shipp, just made a 3-pointer to pull UCLA within one point.
UCLA players are picking up several fouls early. All the frontcourt players have at least one. Luc Richard Mbah a Moute picked up his second with 14:32 left and now he's on the bench too. Freshman James Keefe is in.
USC 10, UCLA 5 13:33

Take a seat

Lorenzo Mata just picked up his second foul with 16:27 left in the first half. Albred Aboya came in to replace him.
Also, Nick Young just had a monster slam. He drove the baseline and did a one-handed dunk.
This place is loud.
USC 6, UCLA 2, 15:24 left first half

Ouch!

UCLA center Lorenzo Mata turned the ball over on the offensive end trying to pass it back out of the post. But the ball was stolen by Gabe Pruitt and the Trojans went on a fastbreak. Mata tracked down Dwight Lewis as he was about to shoot a layup and fouled him hard, although there was no flagrant foul called.
Arron Afflalo then turned the ball after Lewis made one of two free throws.
USC 4, UCLA 2, 16:47 left first half

Danelo tribute

The USC-UCLA basketball game is about to tip off. Before the game, there was a moment of silence for USC kicker Mario Danelo, who died last week. His smiling picture was on the JumboTron and it was a nice tribute.
Other than that, the soldout Galen Center is rocking for the first time since its opening.

January 01, 2007

USC king of the Rose Bowl

UCLA beat USC but then lost to Florida State in the Emerald Bowl. USC lost the city rivarly game, but it's convincing win over Michigan should give USC top billing again.
Michigan was supposed to have a chip on its shoulder about not getting into the BCS national championship game, but it sure didn't play like it.

Pete Carroll was just drenched with a bucket of Gatorade by Rey Maualuga and Chilo Rachal. It's official!
Final score USC 32, Michigan 18.

All smiles

Think John David Booty isn't enjoyin this one? He's standing on the sideline with all smiles....
He completed 27 of 45 passes for 391 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
Mark Sanchez is now in the game.

This one is all but official

John David Booty just threw his fourth touchdown pass of the day...this one to Steve Smith....USC is up 32-11 with 6:31 left.
When USC led 19-3, it couldn't employ the usual game plan of running out the clock since it couldn't run. But the pass ended up working just fine as Booty picked apart the Michigan secondary.
As of right now, Booty has thrown for 391 yards and four touchdowns.

Attendance - 93,842
USC 32, Michigan 11, 5:29 left fourth quarter

If Jarrett's leaving...

he'll have picked a great game to end with...Jarrett just scored again. He scored on a 62-yard reception. Michigan DB Leon Hall had a chance to tackle him but Jarrett slipped out of his grasp and cruised into the end zone the rest of the way. As he was at about the 10-yard line, Jarrett pointed at DB Jason Forcier, who was giving chase. Jarrett should've been flagged for taunting, but when Forcier tried to tackle Jarrett after he already was in the end zone, Forcier got flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Again, USC missed the PAT (that's two today).
USC 25, Michigan 11, 7:37 fourth quarter

Getting interesting

USC couldn't capitalize on Michigan's turnover and settled for a field goal to go up 19-3...That meant Michigan would have to score at least twice, including two 2-point conversions...Michigan scored on an 11-yard touchdown from Chad Henne to Adrian Arrington. Michigan also made the 2-point conversion on a run by Mike Hart.
USC 19, Michigan 11, 13:25 left fourth quarter

Trademark fist pump

USC's Pete Carroll is roaming the sidelines with a fist pump and a smile. It's what fans have become used to seeing although that didn't happen in the loss against USC.
Carroll couldn't hide his excitement when Michigan QB Chad Henne fumbled after he was sacked by Brian Cushing. The ball came loose and Lawrence Jackson recovered. USC started its drive at Michigan's 32. Talk about great field position again.

The floodgates are opening

USC has scored again. The Trojans are content passing the ball in the second half, and it's working. John David Booty is 8-for-10 for 112 yards and two scores in the third quarter thus far. Booty connected with Dwayne Jarrett for a 22-yard score. Booty threw a quick pass to Jarrett, who shook off a would-be tackle by defensive back Morgan Trent and went the rest of the way untouched.
Jarrett celebrated by shooting an imaginary jump shot. Not sure what that was all about, but he's not the first player to do that today.
The PAT was botched but USC leads Michigan 16-3, 3:58 left third quarter

touchdown off turnover

Someone finally got in the end zone at the Rose Bowl! USC just scored as John David Booty hit a wide-open Chris McFoy in the back of the end zone on a rollout. The touchdown was set up off a turnover in which Lawrence Jackson intercepted Michigan QB Chris Henne. USC got the ball at the 38 and Booty found Dwayne Jarrett for a 25-yard catch on that drive.
USC 10, Michigan 3, 7:43 left third

so much for that...

USC opened the second half by going three-and-out on its first possession...At the rate these teams are going, whoever gets in the end zone should win this game.
Why is Chauncey Washington not playing? He had one carry for no yards. He's supposedly healthy, but he's not playing. CJ GAble has had the bulk of the carries (10).
Also, Emmanuel Moody has yet to play today.

Ford tribute

Before the game, President Gerald Ford was honored with a moment of silence. Ford died last week. Ford played at Michigan from 1932-34. He was the last Michigan player to have his jersey retired in 1994.

Defensive battle

This isn't exactly a made-for-TV Rose Bowl, is it? Michigan and USC are tied at 3-3 at halftime.
Michigan wasn't able to establish a run and because of USC's sacks, Michigan has run 16 plays for a total of minus-9 yards...The Wolverines have just 85 total yards offensively. USC wasn't much better as it has 122 total yards offensively.
Michigan 3, USC 3 HALFTIME

Sacks special

USC just had three sacks on Michigan's last drive. So, the Trojans' fumble by John David Booty didn't prove costly. Brian Cushing and Keith Rivers combine for one sack on Chad Henne while Terrell Thomas had another one on a corner blitz in which he wasn't even touched and Sedrick Ellis had the third sack of the drive, forcing Michigan to punt.

Missed assignment

USC just drove all the way to Michigan's 21 when someone missed an assignment. Shawn Crable had a clear path to QB John DAvid Booty - no one ever touched him - and as he tackled Booty, the ball popped out. Alan Branch was there to recover. USC had the first turnover of the day and it was costly as USC had just gone eight plays in 47 yards and was knocking on the door.

All tied up

Michigan just went on a 13-play, 54-yard drive that resulted in a 43-yard field goal by Garrett Rivas. QB Chad Henne went for the end on third-and-10, but was unable to hook up with Adrian Arrington. USC defensive back Mozigue McCurtis literally got his head in the way. The ball hit McCurtis in the helmet. Still goes down in the stats as a pass deflection!
USC 3, Michigan 3, 13:23 left 2nd quarter

You can't run

Neither team has done much offensively in the game's first quarter but neither team has been able to establish the run. Michigan had just 10 rushing yards in the first quarter and USC just 8. USC did drive to Michigan's 17 and got a field goal out of it. The Wolverines are putting together a nice drive, but with first-and-10 from USC's 37, QB Chris Henne was sacked by Dallas Sartz. Sartz has been nursing a hip flexor.

Jarrett's record

Receiver Dwayne Jarrett has surpassed Keary Colbert's career receptions record and now has 208...He made a nice 18-yard grab over the middle on a third-and-12....
USC was in the red zone with a first-and-10 from the 17, but was held to a field goal. Mario Danelo kicked a 26-yarder to give USC the early lead.
Jarrett is just a junior and could obliterate the record but might not if he leaves early for the NFL.
USC 3, Michigan 0, 4:02 left first quarter

Reason to be blue

Michigan has run a total of seven plays in its first two possessions for a total of just 11 yards...

Coming up empty

Neither Michigan nor USC did much on its first possession....Michigan has the ball back...

You can run

Michigan's first play from scrimmage was a 10-yard run by Mike Hart...But Michigan went three-and-out and had to punt...Brian Cushing sacked Chris Henne on the series...USC almost blocked the punt...Desmond Reed got the punt and was hit immediately by Darrell Hood. USC to start on offense.

By the way, this is Jill Painter postiing from today's game. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post and I'll try to get to your comments as quickly as I can.

oops!

About 3 1/2 hours before the game, a television cameraman and what looked to be a Michigan student manager were on the field. Someone got on the intercom and yelled at them to get off the field. So, the first people to christen the field were not players!

Smelling roses

The Rose Bowl is set to kick off in about 1 hr, 15 minutes...USC vs. Michigan...USC players are huddling on the field as we speak...The Michigan band is here...The sun is out and it's a bit breezy - the perfect day for a football game.
