No respect?
Nick Young doesn't think USC got UCLA's respect by coming within a last-second shot of beating the Bruins at Galen Center.
``They're a cocky program,'' Young said. ``They think they can beat everybody. We like to be underestimated.''
Matthew Kredell broke into the Daily News in 1998, working part time
at the paper while going to USC. The basketball team’s Elite Eight
run in 2000-01 was USC’s athletic highlight in his time at the
school, when the football team was stuck in the Paul Hackett-era.
After graduating in 2001, he started writing for the Daily News full
time. He’s in his second year covering USC, which coincides with the
rise of the program. He’ll take credit for the success, though Tim
Floyd may have more to do with it. A third-generation Los Angelean,
he grew up reading the Daily News while at El Camino Real High School
in Woodland Hills.

Comments
Cocky programs don't have players who pick up other players after they lose (see Gonzaga last year). Cocky players and coaches don't always give credit to the other team, win or lose.
Nick Young has mistake confident for cocky.

"They think they can beat everybody."
Well, considering UCLA is the #2 ranked team in the country and #1 in the RPI, i see no reason why they shouldn't think they can beat everybody. This quote just shows how little Nick knows about the UCLA program. Cocky programs dont have coaches who watch film at all hours of the day. Cocky programs dont show ultimate respect for their opponents. Young needs to just shut his mouth and prepare for the game- as his last two trips to Pauley haven't turned out so well for him.

Nick is right.
Matt and Hoang are wrong.
Cocky is the right word.

Hey bRUINS, last I checked this is an SC hoops blog. UCLA players and fans always have an air of cockiness and your two replies don't prove anything to the contrary.

Cocky, haha good word to use as he stood there on FSN after beating Washington at home posing, brushing his shoulder, winking like a little kid after he beat the slow kid in kickball. Moreover, lets talk about your football team. Even after the fantastic loss to Texas, they still though they were the better team. Talk about arrogant, self-centered, egomaniacs. Just like football youll feel the sting. only twice in this sport. see ya wed.

Perhaps Howland and the bRuins recognize USC's resurgence, butt they layer it in the context of the rivalry, not in terms of USC becoming a viable opponent who could potentially (and should have) knock(ed) them off. The program has a tradition of cockiness--try being a Trojan at Pauley--though maybe, to be fair, it could be categorized as overconfidence. After the game at Galen, UCLA must have realized, at least to some extent, that this isn't the same USC team it played a year ago and considered an unworthy opponent. Granted, it would have been great for Afflalo's last shot not to have dropped to preserve the USC win. Last year USC won at the Sports Arena without the benefit of home-court advantage (no one can tell me the Sports Arena counted as a home court), and should have won at Galen. I definitely give Afflalo commendations for pulling it out. However, it must be in the back of USC's mind that USC beat then-No. 8 Wichita State, then-No. 14 Washington, then-No. 16 Oregon (on the road, yet, and handed it its first loss before it toppled UCLA to avenge its one-loss record and put UCLA in the same category), then-No. 11 Arizona, and No. 9 Oregon. Then-No. 3 UCLA was close, and the way No. 14 Washington State has been playing--that was another last-second stunner, and Washington State's first "look-at-us-now" win--shows USC is no longer a bottom-feeder, and deserves credit for its feats thus far. The No. 19 next to its name is evidence of this. Unranked USC has done some amazing things this season, which is why the Galen Center has boasted attendance records more than double, even triple that of the Sports Arena. There is enthusiasm and potential for a program that was once thought unsalvageable. So ranked USC faltered against Stanford (you're welcome for the ranking) and the overgrown oafs (I can't wait to see 'em at Galen, goodness knows) and came back over California. Let's see if USC earns its numbers this week. They're not only fighting for the season split, the supremacy of LA (don't give me that "just like football" nareshcheit), and the legitimacy of a program that (regardless of who you are, you can't deny) is on the rise. Whether UCLA likes it or not, they will be challenged. May the better men (of Troy) win.

Hey, Dan -- your tired and trite "Just Like Football" still rings a hollow tone. A fluke 4-point win after seven straight trouncings doesn't exactly have the head of steam it could have. Especially after that Emerald Bowl. You WISH just like football. You have a mediocre program with a soft head coach that is light years away from your basketball team. Your basketball team is awesome, I won't argue with that. But don't belitte it by comparing it to your football program.

all I have to say is the multiple sportsman of the year, great champion, Tiger Woods has said that he has the mindset that he can beat anyone on any given day. And don't even try to tell me it's not the same thing because one's a team sport and the other individual. Confidence is key in sports. Nice try Nick Young, join the Marcus Williams club of public statements to get at the psychy of our Bruins.

Haha.. Christopher. Thanks for the reminder of Nick Young in front of the Camera.... Nick is Hilarious.
He is a great athlete, with an amazing personality that people and teamates are just drawn to. USC is incredibly lucky to have him. He is one of a kind.
If ucla had a single player with an ounce of personality you would know what I mean.

"After the game at Galen, UCLA must have realized, at least to some extent, that this isn't the same USC team it played a year ago and considered an unworthy opponent."
Howland was just on KLAC highlighting Gibson as leading candidate for freshman of the year and saying exactly that; SC basketball team isn't what it was a year ago.
Leave the gamesmanship to PC and "Co." and let's let these teams play ball.

The Bruins have a great team. They have earned the right to have a little swagger. Nothing wrong with that. The Trojans will have to play well to beat them. Fight on!!

"Pot.kettle.black"
Not at all, Nick. UCLA hasn't been taken lightly in football by USC because of its consistency in past years. And if you compare the treatment of Bruins at USC and Trojans at UCLA, there's a huge disparity. Some Bruin fan gouged a Trojan fan's eye out at the Rose Bowl after the rivalry game, for one. Now, how about a complete sentence?
"Howland was just on KLAC highlighting Gibson as leading candidate for freshman of the year and saying exactly that; SC basketball team isn't what it was a year ago."
My point proven. Let's hear him say it on 710.

"UCLA hasn't been taken lightly in football by USC because of its consistency in past years."
Are you serious? All I hear and read is how SC fans are saying they didn't prepare enough, it was a fluke. That indicates UCLA football precisely was taken lightly.
The eye gouging incident hasn't been substantiated as being a UCLA fan. It could have been a punk tailgating and Tommy messed with the wrong punk. Don't get me wrong, I think the guy should do hard time if he's ever found. Glass to the eye is criminal.
As for Howland saying SC bball has improved from last year on 710, he'd say the same thing on any channel. He's a man of integrity, why would he hold back anything on another station? "Know your enemy before going into battle" said Sun Tzu.

"Are you serious? All I hear and read is how SC fans are saying they didn't prepare enough, it was a fluke. That indicates UCLA football precisely was taken lightly."
I never said it wasn't a fluke, but it was obvious UCLA scouted USC very well and the defensive coordinator did a great job shutting down USC's offense when it counted. I think that's a sentiment echoed by USC's coaching staff.
"The eye gouging incident hasn't been substantiated as being a UCLA fan. It could have been a punk tailgating and Tommy messed with the wrong punk. Don't get me wrong, I think the guy should do hard time if he's ever found. Glass to the eye is criminal."
Who else would the guy have been? And according to the NBC story I saw, witnesses said the guy was shouting (probably drunkenly) pro-UCLA and anti-USC comments.
"As for Howland saying SC bball has improved from last year on 710, he'd say the same thing on any channel. He's a man of integrity, why would he hold back anything on another station?"
I'm just pointing out that KLAC is the UCLA station and likely doesn't have the circulation like ESPN does.
""Know your enemy before going into battle" said Sun Tzu."
I think USC and UCLA know each other well enough.

That's hardly conclusive. The fact of the matter is that neither of us really know what went down...and for you to cite that as an example of USC's 'classier' fans is ridiculously naive.
Here's a hint for you.... Try to take all the anti-UCLA sentiment you read while hanging around the Southern Cal boards with a grain of salt.
Posted by: Tony | February 6, 2007 7:41 PM
Yes ashley I know the culprit. He is a UCLA econ major and a 4th year junior.... Get real. The guy may think he was a UCLA fan but I'll bet $1,000 he has no affiliation whatsoever with the school other than his t-shirt and hat. Is this any different from the former Raider fans/bandwagon trojan fans???
Posted by: James | February 6, 2007 7:57 PM
Sc fans who are glad to have Nick should praise Jordan Farmar who provided Nick with study aids when he was failing the SAT. How's that for personality?
Posted by: James | February 6, 2007 8:00 PM
Dang Ashley! That has to be the longest post ever on this blog. I don't know where you information comes from, but all I've ever heard UCLA players/coaches do is heap praise on the Toejamz resurgence. Pink Floyd is the only one I've heard smack from with his 'Arizona is the benchmark of the Pac 10' smack and 'UCLA is not a rivalry, but just another game like the other 8 teams in the conference'. I think Nick's comments are some false bravado to try to give his team extra motivation (like the 'there will be more UCLA fans at Galen than $UC). Lord knows they'll need all they can get.
Posted by: brewnz | February 6, 2007 8:32 PM
I know Nick Young a little. I have chatted with him at the Sports Arena. After one game he was surrounded by young autograph-hounding kids. I said to the kids, "How come you are asking him for his autograph and not me?" Young laughed heartily.
And as for his "cocky," comment, come on. These SC and UCLA athletes were not only the best in their high schools, some may have been the best in the entire city or state. Have you ever seen a top athlete who was not cocky?
Posted by: LAWYER JOHN | February 7, 2007 9:46 AM
Lawyer John, Nick will be playing for one of the NBA teams in the near future, and you're right that all high-level athletes are cocky. Contrary to what some may believe, UCLA fans know that your team is for real and Floyd will keep them challenging for the title. Look at what he's done with essentially three returning players from last season.
Posted by: brewnz | February 7, 2007 10:44 PM
I'll come out and say it: until 2002, I blindly followed my father's affiliation with UCLA. I say with absolute confidence that UCLA fans are more rowdy than USC fans, all-around. Some of my dearest friends attend UCLA, and they say that whenever they're at USC's facilities, whether the Coliseum, the Sports Arena, the Galen Center, Loker Stadium, and so on, they don't feel as though they're taunted in any way out of line. When I went to the USC-UCLA game at Paully last year, walking from my car to the complex, at some times, I was scared $h!tless. Not that USC fans can't cuss with the best of 'em, but the verbal assaults were completely degrading and horribly indicative of UCLA fans (and yes, these were students). You know, if the situation had been reversed, with a USC fan assaulting a UCLA fan, you would feel the same way I do, I'm willing to wager.
Posted by: Ashley | February 8, 2007 5:12 PM
The praise from the players came in the context of "it'll be considered a more quality win or loss."
You have to admit that UCLA has, during Olsen's tenure at Arizona, been more inconsistent and streaky than the Wildcats.
You talk about motivation. USC gave UCLA more tickets outright (500 if I recall and many given to students) than UCLA allotted for USC (100 is the number I was told and none given to students). That's despicable.
You may have met Nick, but I happen to know him. Young is a kind, humble guy with a great sense of humor. He comes from an unfortunate background and thanks his lucky stars for the breaks he was given, his second chance going to Cleveland from Dorsey, Farmar's friendship and assistance (fyi, one can't "fail" the SAT, but athletes do have to reach a certain score to be certified by the NCAA clearinghouse), and so on.
I wasn't at the game last night, but I had friends who did. They said they were harangued, especially after UCLA took the lead for the first time midway through the second. I saw no USC students taunting UCLA fans at the Galen Center. We might not be able to get along, but seriously, yelling obscenities and intimidating opposing fans isn't right, ever.
If anything, now UCLA knows 100 percent that USC is legitimate. Had the game gone even a minute longer, I think Bruins would've seen red.
Posted by: Ashley | February 8, 2007 5:24 PM
Ashley, Ashley, Ashley...I can only say that having gone to numerous UCLA/USC events across town that you misrepresent Trojan fans as being saintly. They're far from it. From the recent game at Galen, I listened to fans shouting pretty harsh insults at the UCLA cheerleaders and equally "classy" taunts at Lorenzo Mata. Face it, there are crappy fans on both sides. One Trojan fan I do enjoy at the games is John Papadakis. How could anyone not like that guy?
