MATTHEW KREDELL

Matthew Kredell broke into the Daily News in 1998, working part time at the paper while going to USC. The basketball team’s Elite Eight run in 2000-01 was USC’s athletic highlight in his time at the school, when the football team was stuck in the Paul Hackett-era. After graduating in 2001, he started writing for the Daily News full time. He’s in his second year covering USC, which coincides with the rise of the program. He’ll take credit for the success, though Tim Floyd may have more to do with it. A third-generation Los Angelean, he grew up reading the Daily News while at El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills.

Ranked again

Sweeping the Bay Area schools in L.A. put USC back in the national polls Monday, No. 23 in the AP and No. 24 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches. It's the third time this year USC has been ranked. Let's see if they have some staying power this time. Pac-10 teams ranked in the AP: No. 2 UCLA, No. 13 Washington State, No. 17 Oregon, No. 23 USC.

Wazzou is underrated. That game on Thursday v. UCLA should be a great. Hopefully it'll tire the cougs out and we can steal the game on saturday. FIGHT ON!

I don't get the polls! We beat Oregon twice and have one less overall win with a tougher OOC schedule, yet they are 17? Oh yeah, and were ahead of them in the conference standings too. People needs to start losing voting privileges.

PH55 My guess is Oregon has a better W-L against the top 25. Do your homeworkl. Any more stupid questions.

MK edit: His question is legitimate. USC beat Oregon twice. What keeps Oregon ahead is wins over two teams currently in the top 10, No. 2 UCLA and No. 10 Georgetown. Georgetown was Oregon's only nonconference victory over a top 25 team, and Georgetown was No. 23 at the time. USC beat then-No. 8 Wichita State in nonconference play. However, Georgetown has risen since while Wichita State has fallen. That's the biggest difference.

Which goes to prove that Oregon has beaten legitamate 10 ten teams, while usc has yet to prove itself. Wichita State was over-rated and well as Washington (which sc needed overtime at HOME to beat the huskies). Arizona wins are good, but don't mean too much as Arizona has fallen from their elite status. They also lost to Kansas, top 10 ten team. SC is a decent team but far from legitamate top 25. Let's remember, sc lost to Arizona state, as much as trojans would like to forget. Doesn't show well. SC will be in the tournament, maybe, if they don't totally fall apart on the road in Washington, not a gaurantee they will one, much less both.

MK edit: Well, if Oregon is a legitimate team then USC has beaten it twice. Because Oregon has wins over two current top-10 teams, USC fans should not be upset about Oregon being ranked higher. However, USC is simply a better team than the Ducks and have proven that in a much more reliable way.
