MATTHEW KREDELL

Matthew Kredell broke into the Daily News in 1998, working part time at the paper while going to USC. The basketball team’s Elite Eight run in 2000-01 was USC’s athletic highlight in his time at the school, when the football team was stuck in the Paul Hackett-era. After graduating in 2001, he started writing for the Daily News full time. He’s in his second year covering USC, which coincides with the rise of the program. He’ll take credit for the success, though Tim Floyd may have more to do with it. A third-generation Los Angelean, he grew up reading the Daily News while at El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills.

Pruitt to stay in draft

Gabe Pruitt has hired Sam Goldfeder of Excel Sports Management as his agent according to sources, meaning he will stay in the NBA draft and not return to USC for his senior season.

The 6-foot-4 guard, who helped USC advance to the NCAA regional semifinals last season, declared for the draft last month but did not immediately hire an agent so he could keep open the option of returning to school.

Goldfeder also represents UCLA guard Arron Afflalo in this draft. Other NBA players who use the agency include Jason Kidd, Paul Pierce and Lamar Odom.

Hate to see Pruitt go...He was the key to winning the national championship next year....Now we need Taj to step up and lead and gel the great recruiting class. That's pressure. Good luck, Smiling Gabe - You will be missed. You were awesome against Stanford in the Pac 10 tournament.

Big mistake. I have watched Gabe since high school, and he lacks the agressiveness, and strength to take the ball to the basket. Mentally, Gabe does not come to play every night. A nice kid that will get a wake up call come draft day as did Dwayne Jarrett.

Agents are telling kids what they want to hear. The talent is there, but I am afraid it is potential at this point. Gabe, is a streaky player much like Desmond Farmer, and last I looked he is destined for a career in the development
league.

I am amazed one can go from testing the waters to entering the draft permanently without even a tryout with an NBA Team. My question is how much are agents paying these kids even before the draft, or are they offering gifts?

Could work out for Nick Young because his game is more versatile, but I am worried about Gabe on draft day, and after that a career in the development league with nothing to fall back on except a few good games in the NCAA Tournament.

The cash looks good now as part of a dream, but the real money would have been better after playing alongside OJ Mayo. I hope your decision works out, it has for a few like Lebron, and Carmelo, but not for the majority which is what I think you fall into after only 2 and 1/2 season at Troy.
