Unsolicited advice for the Obamas

When I heard about Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle promising their young daughters that they can have a dog I cringed when the AKC offered them a list of hypoallergenic pure breeds. Not that I have anything against the AKC but I was a bit perturbed that no one seemed to step up and suggest that he adopt a dog. After all there are plenty of breed-specific rescue organizations that can help.

But my irritation subsided when I read this!

Here's a snippet from the article:

"There are thousands of affectionate loyal dogs of all sizes, shapes and colors trapped in the animal control system who need a way out," said Julie Castle of Best Friends. "There are also plenty of purebred dogs that can be adopted from breed rescue organizations, without purchasing one from a pet store."

Best Friends Society has setup the website called Obama Family Dog to convince the Obamas that adoption is the best way to get a dog, even if it's a purebred. According to the article, Malia Obama has decided on a goldendoodle (golden retriever/poodle mix). I have a suggestion for her. I just found a website for poo mix rescues. And I'm sure there's many more where that came from. If you want to participate in this oh-so important decision (yeah it pales in comparison to what's going to happen in November but still) please sign this petition.

One thing that cracks me up about the L.A. Unleashed blog entry is the part at the end, which features a photo of Socks the Cat:

We have our own suggestion for the Obamas: what about ...A cat?

ahem...since I'm a bit partial to cats I'm certainly not opposed to that idea! LOL!! But then again most of them aren't hypoallergenic unless you want one of those hairless cats. Although I just found this but I definitely do not suggest getting one of those. That's just too Frankensteinish to me!!
