Best QB? Too early to tell, but …

The caller asked for a ranking of the area’s high school
quarterbacks. That may be a bit premature, because nobody has played a
down this season. It is possible to list the most likely candidates
among the returning starters:

(Alphabetically) Alec Campos (Whittier), Rene Cerda (Montebello),
Angel Molina (Santa fe), Pedro Olivares (Cantwell Sacred heart) and
Joseph Orduno (Schurr).

In some situations, the position is still up for grabs, but once the
season begins and lineups are established, here is a list of other
potential candidates who are competing for the position and are either returners (R) who were on the
varsity as backups last year, or newcomers (N), who are either
moving up from lower division teams or transfers:

(Alphabetical by team): (California) Drew Harris(JV)/Tony Rivera (T),
(El Rancho) Javier Hernandez (JV), (La Habra) Chris Morales (R), (La
Mirada) Chad Albers (JV), (La Serna) Mike Ibarra (R)/Ben Burke (FR),
(Pioneer) Ronnie Palacios (JV)/, (St. Paul) Adrian Gallegos (R),
(Whittier Christian) Brett Esslinger (JV).

Molina hands down. Once again Santa Fe will run all over the Del Rio league.

  • murray

Molina clearly is the area’s most experienced QB after taking his team to unbeaten league championships the past two seasons and playing in five postseason playoff games. It is interesting to note backup Dameron Fooks, would probably start for many of the other area schools.

Roger – you may remember me from the Whittier Soccer club and Whittier HS soccer
My daughter Candace starts her senior yr at CSU Dominguez Hills soccer this weekend with a road trip to the Seattle area for 3 games. It would be great to do a article on her as a local HS player on her last year as a college starter .
Elizabeth Romo would be another good one – maybe you can do a combined article featuring them
    Liz plays at CSULB

Santa Fe has the best in the area by far

  • murray

    Hi Taylor Boyd:
Santa Fe is blessed with two outstanding QBs. Backp Dameron Fooks would start for a lot of southland teams. Until next season, tho’, he’ll play a lot of wide receiver and defensive back

Once again La Habra gets overlooked. Being to far north to be noticed by the Register and being OC not any pub from the Whittier paper.
Sante Fe definately has talent, but never seems to put anything together in the playoffs. la Habra has been the best program in this area since the Morales era began, and will continue to be this year.

Not sure what you’re referring to, but the Highlanders are No. 2 (“…could just as easily have been No. 1.”)in the preseason rankings for area teams and were prominently displayed in the football season preview section. Might be hard to separate La Habra from Santa Fe, or vice versa, in terms of “area’s best program” since 2002. And it doesn’t appear to be any different this season.

Mr. Murray I forgot to thank for this wonderful forum.
It shows just how much you care about our local sports teams, keep up the good work.

Angel Molina got sidelined only because he got hurt on one of Santa Fe’s games. He did not play because of that terrible injury for 3 weeks-that’s why his scores are not up to par. He only feels 85% better so wait-He is still managing to play a good game. Wait until he is 100%……
