Who has the best chance?

The Third Season.

The preseason, or as some refer to it as the practice season; the league season; and now, the CIF Southern Section divisional playoffs.
Nine area football teams seeing divisional championships will begin their pursuit this weekend.
Here’s how they’ll begin:
Western Division (formerly Div. III) — St. Paul at Downey.
Southwest Division (Div. VI) — La Mirada at Charter Oak.
Southeast Division (Div. VII) — Bell Gardens at California.
Arroyo at La Habra
Fullerton vs. Santa Fe
Schurr at South El Monte
Whittier at Westminster
La Serna at Troy
Northeast Division (Div. XIII) — Capistrano Valley Christian vs Whittier Christian (Div. XIII)

Which are team has the best chance to bring home the title?

  • Polypride

Looks like Troy and St Paul have the best chances in their Divisions. Half of the Del Rio league teams will disappear in the first round (LS & WHS) and the other two will be out by the second round. Santa Fe will choke as always.

  • wc alum

Whittier Christian has the best chance to win a title. All you del rio league guys say it is becasuse of the division we play in but the reality is this years team is the second best team in the area next to st. paul(Their division is just to tough for them to win a title). Everyone saw what we did to Whittier(41-13), and everyone saw what whittier did to la serna(31-10). The alpha league is weak at the bottom but very strong at the top. Any of the top three finishers would run the table in the del rio league. I know this is hard for you guys to beleive but it is reality. WC does not have the numbers yet to say it is the areas best program, but this year they have the best team(excluding st paul) and the areas best player in Esteban Camarillo.

    My picks:
St. Paul at Downey. = Downey
La Mirada at Charter Oak. = Charter Oak
Bell Gardens at California. = Cal High
Arroyo at La Habra = LH
Fullerton vs. Santa Fe = SF
Schurr at South El Monte= Pick em
Whittier at Westminster = Westminster…Whittier is very good at running the ball but needs to pass to win.
La Serna at Troy = Troy
Capistrano Valley Christian vs Whittier Christian = WCHS

  • Chieftian Alumni

There is no doubt that Coach Caffrey at Whittier Christian is putting together a very good program over there and is having a very good season but to say they would run the table in the Del Rio League is a pretty bold statement. Dont let the game against Whittier fool you there is no way they would get by both Cal and SF. And while Camarillo is have a great season in his league he is no (love or hate him) Nicholas Grigsby. With all that said I hope they win a title in their division to complete their season.

Troy just seems to be having one of those years!! I think its theirs to lose.

It’s great to see WC fb back. But don’t fool yourself thinking that you are in La Habra’s league. Just ask your coach. Have you seen the talent at LH? Yes, Camaraillo is a great player, but the game wouldn’t even be close.
Mr. Murray any comments on this?

  • NUMBER 10

BELL GARDENS OVER CAL HI(14-7)STOP GRISBY THATS ALL THEY GOT

    LA HABRA OVER ARROYO(35-14)
BLITZ MORALAS…CANT SPELL HIS NAME LOL….
    ROSEMEAD OVER SADDLEBACK (21-28)
    !!!!

  • edwin8

wow i see alot of wc spirt in here thats good… yeah u might of beat whittier thats fine u can say camarillo is the best area player thats fine as well…

i wish wc luck in the playoffs

but all in reality when ur seniors leave next year i think ur down to the bottom of the pile…

i could see an upset come friday night (whittier vs westminister). i dont see cal losing in the first round or santa fe ..la serna might be knocked out but its any given friday,

but we all have our own thoughts or it could just be that people cant face reality

whittier, cal high, santa fe ,la serna , wc, st. paul good luck to all of u .

people should be supportive of all these teams instead of putting them down..when was the last time someone in the del rio bring a cif championship home ,when did wc do it , or st paul, come on people

  • wc alum

highlanderfan, your right about la habra, my bad for not mentioning you guys, I was reffering more to the del rio league.

edwin8, I said that wc does not have the numbers to say it is the areas best program, i said this year they have the best team excluding st paul and la habra.

We are not to the point where we can field a great team every year, but two in a row is a start, and for all our seniors who are graduating only four played football all four years. We have plenty of talent returning.

  • LS grad

Polypride, you are so right. that Santa Fe will choke as always. they always have great players but in the playoffs, they find ways to mess it up and lose it all, usally to the worst teams. so sad. no wait i love to hear that prediction SF chokeing. yes

  • highlanderfan

    wc alum,
No problem. I root for you guys. It is great to see that you have coach bringing that program back where it belongs.
It just seems, at times, that LH gets overlooked because we are an OC team that register doesn’t cover because we are to far north. The whittier paper never gives us our due because most of their teams are in the Del Rio league. We had won 5 straight freeway league championships, until Troy snapped our streak this year. In the last 4 years we have won 2 CIF championships and have been to the semis the other 2 times.

    Highlanderfan,
The biggest diference between LH And WC (two well coached teams who do what it takes to win… offseason weight and speed training) is the number of athletes. LH has more fb players in freshman fb than Wc has in the program, so Wc has to manage its player better. It does not have the luxury of plug and play personell.
As for the rest of you.. Eastabon Camerillo could play at any school in the area and have huge impact. He runs hard and often finishes runs with a straight arm or running over bigger players. He has heart and desire as well as tallent and that’s a combo any coach would like to have in a back.
Good luck to all CIF playoff teams…can’t wait for Friday!

How about Roger Murray becomes a sports writer instead of a football writer?

    Hey Highlander Fan (Morales):
Stop the the selfless promoting. Will you ever get enough press? Win the CIF and you can probably ride in the parade. Enough already!

  • Chieftain Alumni

Here we go again. Another La Serna person spouting off.

LS Grad Would care to clarify your statement? Usually to the worst teams? are kidding me. Lets see in 2001 we lost to Los Altos who ended up in the finals. 2002 we lost to South Hills who won the title. 2003 we lost to San Gabriel who ended up in the finals. 2004 we lost to West Covina who won the title and last year we lost to Orange who played in the finals. How can you possibly say any of those teams are among the worst?

After getting your asses handed to you by Whittier I thought all of you had all but disappeared. Have fun with your extra week of practice because after, as one person put it you backed into the playoffs your going to get killed by Troy!!!!!! Nice 4th place finish in the DRL!!!!

Im sure the team will play with heart as they always due but Troy looks damn good. To the playersI wish you all luck and should you win I will the first to eat some crow. Good luck young men!

  • Flying High

Don’t be suprised when Cal High Shows up in the Finals. You can never underestimate this team. I hope to see them play Santa Fe again and Embarrass Malstede and there coaching staff.

  • I’m just sayin’..

    LS grad,

Santa Fe might “choke” in the semi-finals, but how often does La Serna make it in there? And before you talk trash you should spell check….. I guess that La Serna education didn’t pay off much.

Good luck to ALL the schools playing in the coming weeks!

  • wc alum

    Highlanderfan,

I can see your frustration about not receiving the coverage your team deserves, what you guys have done over the past few years is incredible, hopefully the daily news will take note of your concearn and provide more coverage of your team. Good luck in the playoffs.

Good luck to all local teams in tomorrows games

  • joel werk

Roger.. This has nothing to do w/ an article … Was looking up something and came across the Star News.. Looking further I saw your name and thot I would drop you an e-mail.. You were always such a great support of me and my friends.. Scott Butler, Jeff Sterk, Jim Lucas, Kelly Yank.. I hope this note finds you well..! Sincerely, Joel Werk

  • OC

    Highlander Fan:

I don’t think you read the same papers the rest of us. La Habra is unique in that it gets coverage in both the WDN and the OCR. How about that big article of your QB a few weeks back and the coverate of when you guys lost to Troy.

Keep in mind there are other teams to cover. These papers aren’t called the La Habra Highlanders Daily News.

If LH does its job and gets to the final vs. Troy and wins….then you’ll get plenty of coverage.

  • todd

lets just start off by saying why are the lancers in the damn playoffs, they couldnt even hold up an above 500 average in league, and then they are in the playoffs? thats jsut giving trow a victory! but hey it will build character for those lil lancer boys! i think cal high has the best chance coming fro mthe del rio league, santa fe is hot but i dont think they got what it takes to play with some of the teams out there in this thing, when it all comes down to it dushan ancich and the condors still get things goin! and they still are an exciting team to watch so i see them in the finals! SPECULATE AND REGULATE!

  • Condor Player

lol im sitting here in class listining to my I pod and lookin at these comments about la serna and whittier and santa fe and Cal but what is gonna happen in the playoffs is plain and simple Cal will work hard to get into the finals la habra is a problem but they are beatable! i would honnestly LOVE if Troy lost to the next team they play cause i know for sure La Serna cant get the job done so CAL Vs. TROY or CAL Vs. SANTA FE that would be a sold out game plus more for sure!

Am i the only won that is thinkin this??? probabley might have to move the location lol Where do the teams play in CIF finals anyway

  • La Serna AND Cal High parent

Ok, to all the La Serna bashers, enough already. La Serna has made the playoffs – GET OVER IT – The LS team and coaches will do their best and work their hardest as they have done in each game, that’s how we got here.
How about supporting ALL the Del Rio League Teams during the first round????
Good Luck to La Serna, I really hope to see us bring in a big upset against Troy.

Good Luck to Santa Fe you guys have been strong in league for 6 years now, hope to see you make it all the way.

Good luck to Cal, the last few seasons have been extremely rough on you guys since the undeafeated season in 2000 – Which my oldest played on the team-
Hope to see you guys continue to play with the passion you have shown this year.

IF La Serna does not advance then my family and I, including my son that plays for La Serna will be there supporting whichever Whittier school is still in the hunt.
Everybody – Stay Strong, Stay Safe.

  • Chieftian Alumni

BRAVO.La Serna AND Cal High parent:

Good luck to each and every team in the playoffs! Whittier, La Serna, Cal and Santa Fe go out and represent the Del Rio League the best you can and show everyone that the DRL is a force to be reckoned with!!!

  • Moorfan

At the beginning of the season several comments were made that the Mission Valley League was stronger than the Almont League. At the end of the round one of the playoffs, 2 of the Almont League teams remain while all three of the Mission Valley teams have been eliminated. What happened?

  • CondorPride22

As far as i know Santa fe & cal won and la serna got it served to them. But its okay they gave it there all. Cal plays La habra next friday at Cal hopefully will pull through. But really nobody can say anything about grigsby now because we won the game with out him.

  • Former Paramount 3 Time Champion

My little brother now plays for Cal High. I had the opportunity to play for Paramount High during our 3-peat years. I know what it’s like to win and lose. To the young men of Cal High, good luck during the playoffs. The victory over Bell Gardens has shown your dedication and love for the game. Regardless of this years fall back on the victories taken away, always look forward and remember to stay focused on the future. I hope to travel to California to see this weeks game against La Habra. Good Luck.

  • highlanderfan

    Hey Condor Player,
You are in for RUDE awakening.
Tell me you were joking, thinking that LS would even be in the game at halftime.
Troy has an excellent team this year.
That game was over, when the seeding were made.
I believe Cal Hi & SF are good teams. But they’re going to have to play their best, to stop a Troy vs. LH rematch.
The good thing is, the talking is over. Now we get to settle it on the field.

  • http://www.insidesocal.com/murray/2006/11/who_has_the_best_chance.html#comments Hsfbfanatic

Friday’s games were great!now we know that St.Paul; Cal High; Whittier Christian; La Habra, and Santa Fa have what it takes to win first round games. These young men have earned the right to practice on Thanksgiving… what could be better

  • >>THE FAN<<

THAT IS TRUE ALOT OF PEOPLE SAID THAT THE MISSION VALLEY LEAGUE WAS TOUGHER THEN THE ALMONT LEAGUE WHAT HAPPEN THIS YEAR THE MISSION LEAGUE WASNT READY FOR THE PLAOOFS I GUESS NOT CAUSE THERE ALL AT HOME FOR THANKSGIVING!!!! • Condor-O-Line-Dad

    To THE FAN:
I do not think win/loss from so long ago is really a factor at this point in the season, because all the teams are much better than they were in the pre-season.But anyway, according to both websites I checked, Downey actually beat La Habra 10-7.
And if you want to go that route just for the heck of it, Sante Fe beat Downey 14-13. And of course, Cal beat Sante Fe 21-20. Not a big deal however, just food for thought. Things that make you go HMMMMMM!

  • highlanderfan

    The Fan,
Great teams improve as the season goes on. So if you think you are going to play the team that lost to Downey you are in for a BIG surprise.
Friday all the talkin will be over.

  • Chieftain Alumni

So whats the word on Grigsby? How bad was his injury? I love how WDN had nothing to say about it or give any sort of details.

Congratulations Navarro! I know you said that you always wanted to play defense but after reading all the preseason articles on Cal it was very nice to read about your offensive performance Friday night against Bell Gardens and the victory of the Cal High Condors?.

  • Condor Player

you know what i think its time the Del Rio Leauge shows what we got we are the only teams left we should be helpin each other to beat these Freeway leauge SISSYS we gotta go untill the finals so we can play the game of all games honnestly Santa Fe And Cal Should take it DEL RIO LEAUGE lol damn that would be sick as hell

  • Condor Player

lol ok i know what Highlander is talking about but the fact is la serna isnt the best del rio leauge has to offer i wish we could play you guys TODAY so i could show you guys whats up

  • murray

    Yo, Chieftain Alumni:
Unlike those who want to give and get the news first even if lacking accuracy, there are those who prefer their info to be actual and factual even if at the expense of not being first on the block.
Grigsby’s ankle is NOT broken despite what first reports indicated. X-Rays showed no break and the diagnosis is bad bruise and prossible sprain.
He wants to play, but the decision concerning his availability will not be made until Thursday p.m. and more likely not until game time Friday night.
I realize this info is not as exciting as the first reports, but it is more accurate and interesting.

  • Chieftian Alumni

Thanks for the update because I heard everything from a broken leg to a broken ankle. I knew Id probably get the answer in here.

Hmmm, waiting to see if Grigsby will play? Doesnt that sound familiar??? La Habra better put together two separate game plans. One from the Cal High Condors (first five games) and one from the Cal High Grigsbys (their last 5 games). In wishing everyone good health Im glad to hear its not broken.

  • highlanderfan

    Hey Condor #65,
I will be at the game watching you block those Freeway league SISSY’S. I am looking forward to reading your comments after the game.

  • Chieftain Alumni

    Hey #65 & O-line Dad

La Habra smashed Buena Park 42-7 while Cal High (pre-Grigsby) squeaked by Buena Park 17-7. Will Grigsby play? If so how close to 100% will he be?

    Just some food for thought.

  • Condor-O-Line-Dad

    Chieftain Alumni

What you say is true. The Condors win against Buena Park was ugly, I was there. It definitely should have been a blow out and they cannot bring that kind of game Friday against La Harba. If Grigsby is healthy we are that much stronger, however, I have seen this team practice and I have watched them play all season. They have more weapons than they are sometimes given credit for. If they come out strong and play mistake-free football it will assuredly be an exciting night. Go Condors!!! PlAY WITH PASSION!!!
Good luck to Sante Fe, it would be great to see a Cal-Sante Fe rematch, instead of the much talked about Troy-La Habra rematch.

  • Chieftian Alumni

O-line Dad, I must agree that an all Del Rio finals would be awesome. We both have a tough road to get there but not an impossible one. It would be nice to finally put all this drama aside. You must admit how frustrating it was for the SF staff and team to basically throw out their entire scouting reports and game tendencies the day of the game as we did when we were notified Nick would be playing. Even with all that it was great game. And should our loss have stood our places would probably be reversed. I guess its kinda like picking your poison.La Habra or Troy???

Good luck to your son and his teammates.

  • highlanderfan

    Condor Player,
You should be very proud of the way you represented your school and community this season. I was impressed with the way your team played Friday night. I know you didn’t get the result you were hoping for, with a healthy Grigsby and little more consistent play at QB, that would have been a very close contest. This is definately a program that is headed in the right direction.

  • Condor Player

What can i say a good game i did my best! they are a good team and i have no regrets im just glad i get to do it again next year and im still a condor for life
