Area teams advance by the bunch

Six area teams played second round games Friday night in the CIF Southern Section postseason tournament.

Five of them won, and the only area team that lost, California, lost to another area team, La Habra.
And the wins were decisive, nothing cheap about any of them.
An impressive showing to say the least.
La Habra 35, California 12. Highlanders jumped on top with 14 points in their first two possessions and 4:17 of the opening quarter and never looked back.
Santa Fe 43, Alhambra 7. Chiefs led, 14-7 at halftime, then rode Angel Molina’s 9 for 10 passing for 200-plus yards.
Schurr 38, Westminster 8. Spartans not flashy, just efficient, and may not have played their best game yet.
Whittier Christian 40, Saddleback Valley Christian 13. Next up, unbeaten St. Margaret’s, the Division’s No. 1 seed and a 35-0 winner over Lucerne Valley.
St. Paul 13, Mira Costa 7. The Swordsmen keep proving they can find a way to win, this time it was in overtime. Definitely the area’s little train that could.
Anyone have any comments on these?

Next up:
Friday, Dec. 1:
La Habra at Schurr, probably at 7 p.m.
West Torrance at St. Paul, probably 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 2
Santa Fe vs. Troy, probably at Fullerton HS, probably at 7p.m.
Whittier Christian at St. Margaret’s, probably at 7:30 p.m.
Any comments on these?

I agree with you St. Paul is the train that could. Its amazing every school we play against are bigger and the seem faster, but our players will not stop. The swordsmen dig deep and come out and make the plays that are needed. Our defense is awesome. Its amazing to see them play each week. Congratulations to all area teams making it to the semi’s. Hopefully all our kids will have a safe journey next friday. Go St. Paul.

  • The Dude

Well the results were interesting for this past friday…St. Paul has impressed me with advancing to the semis, but have yet another tough game ahead of them with West Torrance who pummeled Culver City. Santa Fe won big against what was to be the Almont Leagues pride and joy in Alhambra and now have the game I would be revved up to see since Santa Fe played Shaun Cody and Los Altos, losing 7-8 giving the Conquerors their truest test during that years playoffs en route to LA’s Division VII Championship over Charter Oak. This should be quite an exciting week, so let’s get the ball rolling!

Bold – Indicates the winning team
    * – Indicates the game of the week

    La Habra @ Schurr
Highlanders…Spartans. Steven Cano is quite the underrated RB along with an underrated QB in Joseph Orduno who is now starting to finally get some praise..Schurr has a myriad of weapons at their hands and best make use of all of them vs a tenacious defense in La Habra that had locked down the highly favorable Condors. Quarterback Chris Morales looked decent on friday but really needs to step up in this one for LH to show it’s muscles. Greg Francis needs to be highly aware in this one as the Highlanders’ defense will most definitely have a very potent offense stepping up to face them in this one. Either way this will be a high scoring game on both sides unless La Habra shifts the secondary into a higher gear but still must hold down Cano.
Final score prediction: LHHS 38 @ SHS 31

    West Torrance @ St. Paul
The Swordsmen are still alive after a great overtime win vs Mira Costa. The question is how will St. Paul hold up when they take on West Torrance. Luis Garcia has taken over for Grigsby and done well for himself and the Swordsmen. I sincerely believe that St. Paul can and should win this one by a good margin, it will come from the running game and the defense though. Expect a high flying passing game from West Torrance but not enough to stop the surging boys from the south side of Santa Fe Springs.
Final score prediction: WTHS 14 @ SPHS 38

*Santa Fe v Troy @ Fullerton HS
This is the one many have, if not they should be salivating for this one. Angel Molina, Romeo Pellum and company are taking their traveling act on down to face the almost untouchable Troy in what should be the best game in the Southeast Division Playoffs. Derrick Coleman needs to work harder than ever in order to get the Warriors the big W here. Expect a big offensive game similar to the last Troy/La Habra matchup, but you know what? I’m going with the underdog Chieftains to barely pull out a grueling win, at the cost of losing most of their gas and draining their energy all in this one. Be ready for a push-pull game, but both teams will be showing up for business.
Final score prediction: SFHS 35 @ THS 28

    Whittier Christian @ St. Margaret’s
Can anyone stop Camarillo? Well if someone can, then this is it. The Heralds’ offensive line needs to be tough and firm for Esteban to run through because St. Margaret’s wont be so inclined to let him just waltz in for numerous scores. Camarillo will have the attention of many more if he pulls this one out and I think he will.
Final score prediction: WCHS 24 @ SMHS 17

You wanted predictions/comments? You got em..now let me hear yours. Good luck to everyone left in..and to those out already, wait til next year.

La Habra 35, California 12. – Was there any doubt? Condors came crashing back down to earth quickly.

Santa Fe 43, Alhambra 7. – No surprise here.

    Schurr 38, Westminster 8. – OK, I’ll admit it…I’m impressed.

Whittier Christian 40, Saddleback Valley Christian 13. – They have yet to face competition in the playoffs

St. Paul 13, West Torrance 7. – What can I say but GO SWORDSMEN! A great defensive game. As usual, the fans came out in droves and really got the house rocking in the 4th Qtr and OT.

    Next up:
    Friday, Dec. 1:
La Habra at Schurr – Schurr will discover what Cal Hi did last night…that Del Rio teams have a way to go to compete with the likes of La Habra.

West Torrance at St. Paul – You know I’ve got pick St. Paul but this one is going to be quite the challenge.

Santa Fe vs. Troy – Troy, but SF will give them fits.

Whittier Christian at St. Margaret’s – End of the line for the Heralds.

That being said, I’m still rooting for LH, SF, WC and of course SP to win!

  • ST PAUL FAN

You keep talking about st paul as if they were just lucky. They get no love from the daily news. They are probably the best team in the area, I would take them over la habra or santa fe any day. They play a different style of football. Go watch them play they are agressive from begining to end. They have a tough pre season if they played a schedule like other area teams they would be a one loss or undefeated team. Im not surprised to see them were thay are.

WELL THIS WEEK AGAIN WE PROVED THAT WE DESERVE SOME RESPECT! ITS GOOD TO BE THE UNDERDOG EVERY WEEK CAUSE WE MAKE TEAMS RESPECT US ON THE FIELD….EVERYTHING YOU SEE ON PAPER MEANS NOTHING YOU CAN PICK A TEAM TO WIN ON PAPER BUT IT DOESNT MEAN THEY ARE GOING TO WIN! SCHURR VS LA HABRA THIS WEEK DAMN I CANT WAIT TO PLAY1!!! DONT WORRY THE SPARTANS HAVENT PLAYED AT THERE ABILITY BUT THIS FRIDAY LA HABRA HAS SOMETHING TO WORRY ABOUT CAUSE THE SPARTANS ARE GONNA BRING IT ALL NIGHT LONG!!
    SCHURR OVER LA HABRA 28-14

    SANTA FE OVER TROY 35-28

  • El Rancho

As soon as I showed up to the SF vs AHS game and found out Zion Babb was not playing because he was ineligible and their best linemen was not playing because of an injury I knew Santa Fe was going to be to much for them. Had those 2 kids played, they might not have been enough to win, but the game wouldnt have gotten out of hand like that. As for SF beating Troy, you have something else coming, Troy is on another level. Ramirez, Coleman, and the Swaney’s will be to much for SF.

  • hank

    re: St. Paul

I agree with the previous comments regarding their strength of schedule. They faced powerhouses in Notre Dame, St Bonnie, Loyola and Bishop Amat. I would love for some of the local teams to step up (like El Rancho) and schedule a home/away with St. Paul.

I’m also quite disturbed about the Whittier Daily News lack of respect for St. Paul. They consistantly bash them and talk about them as if they just fell on the map. It’s sad to see a local paper not embrace a school thats represented the area so well.

And, now to the St. Paul vs. West (Torrance) game. I found that both teams had common opponents. West beat both Mira Costa and Redondo by the scores of 14-0 and 39-3, respectively. St. Paul beat those teams 13-7 and 49-7. St. Paul will not be intimidated by West HS. Especially considering who St. Paul has already played. West HS non-league schedule was mediocre at best, facing local teams (El Segundo, Hawthorne, etc.). I see St. Paul coming up with another defensive gem and winning this game 17-14.

  • ogkilla

SCHURR NEEDS TO BE AT THERE BEST THIS WEEK AND NEEDS ANOTHER GREAT PERFORMANCE FROM THERE DEFENSE..This week schurr needs to have a great game all around.as long as defense keeps there end of the bargain..[orduno,valdez,de la hay, cano and jordan]needs to hold there end up on the offensive side of the ball..THIS SHOULD BE ANOTHER GREAT WEEK OF FOOTBALL…BUT IF SURE PLAYS AT THERE BEST THEN IT SHOULD BE{35-21}SCHURR HIGH IN THE FINALS….

  • >>the fan<<

ARIGHT I GIVE SOME CREDIT TO ST PAUL IM IMPRESSED AND I HOPE YOU GUYS WIN BECAUSE JUST LIKE YOU SCHURR IS UNDER RATED TO WIN CIF…..BUT ITS GOOD CAUSE WERE UNDER DOGS….WITH OR WITHOUT TWIST LA HABRA HAS ALOT TO WORRY ABOUT BECAUSE COME FRIDAY THEY ARE GOING TO GET HIT IN THE MOUTH LIKE NEVER BEFORE!!!!! ST PAUL DO YOUR THING THESE WEEK!!!!HATE IT OR LOVE IT UNDERDOGS ALWAYS ON TOP!!!!

You are always going to get fans that say the local media doesn’t give their teams any love. I posted a comment back some time ago on this blog where I said the Papers go where the story is. I still believe that.

Personally, I think the WDN has got a great story right under its nose with St. Paul. Here is a team that undoubtably had one of the toughest schedules in Southern California. On top of that, they got a new coach who was replacing a major legend and on top of that, give him a young and inexperienced team. All the right ingredients for a 2-8 or 3-7 season.

They survived the season with a 5-5 record and were in the game in all losses but 2.

Now they are in the semifinals of one of the toughest divisions in CIF-SS. They’ve reached this point with good old fashioned hard nosed defense and with a lot of heart. Have the wins been pretty, heck no….but as long as you are on the winning end…doesn’t really matter does it?

You didn’t see the Swordsmen standing around feeling sorry for themselves. Nope, the coaches wouldn’t let that happen. They’ve taught these guys to play the game with dignity, class and heart and they taught them to believe in themselves.

The Swordsmen can win Friday night and I believe they will. But win or lose the Swordsmen faithful are proud of the team.

    Go Blue!

Hank, great comments. Your comment above is precisely why I think the Swordsmen can win Friday night.

  • Chieftian Alumni

While I must admit that Troy is an offensive juggernaut their defense has given up a lot of points this season. It seems that against some of the better teams they just managed to outscore their opponents for the win rather than dominating them. With that being said I wouldnt count out Santa Fe just yet. It should be a great game! Not being the favorite going into this game just might take some of the pressure off SF. Plus they seem to be coming together as a complete team just at the right time. I was a bit surprised that Zion Babb ended up being ineligible this week. I was really looking forward to seeing Pellum matching up with him.

On the other side of the bracket La Habra looks good but I really hope Schurr can take them down and we have a Schurr vs SF finals. No knock on Troy or La Habra but Id hate to have a Freeway league team win in their first year in our division.

All the crap SF has taken in these blogs we find ourselves once again as the lone DRL representative. Many expect us to fail so we have nothing to lose. Good luck to all the semi-finalist this week!

Yo Murray. So what was the word on Grigsby? Did he try and go or did he sit out the game? His name wasnt even mention anywhere.

    LA HABRA VS SCHURR

I DONT EVEN NEED TO TALK ABOUT THIS ONE LA HABRA IN A LAUGHER, SCHURR HAS NOTHING TO OFFER, NO REAL SKILL PLAYERS, AND ON DEFENSE, THEIR SECONDARY AND LINEBACKERS ARE OVERATED AND THEIR LINE IS BELOW AVERAGE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL.

    LA HABRA OVER THE SPARTANS

  • >>THE REALIST<<

its obvious all u watch is the “freeway league” to make comments like schurr has no skilled players it’s either that or u haven’t taken a good look at schurr’s offense……. but dont worry u’ll find out real quick how much of an offensive powerhouse schurr is………
i guess it’s easy to brag about a league with no real competitivness…..
i guarantee you la habra will have more then enough compettition then they can handle this friday….
I THINK THE ONLY LAUGHER HERE IS HOW TWISTED YOU ARE IN THE “FREEWAY LEAGUE”

oh and by the way schurr’s secondary & linebackers are far from overrated…..
but they seem to feel the same about your QB…..
don’t you worry about are defense im sure

Best of luck to the Chiefs. Troy dismantled one DRL team and the Chieftians will have a lot to handle. If you think the Cal Hi Stud can run, Troy’s tandem studs are for real.
Coach Mahlstede and staff have been there before. Prediction goes to the Warriors in a heart filled (good) contest.

  • La Serna AND Cal High parent

    Good Luck Santa Fe!!!

Also, Mr. Murray, what has happened with Nick Grisby? He is no longer listed on Rivals.com football recruiting, he was #85 of the top 100, however he’s not there today. Do you have any information?

  • Black and Gold Parent

Should Santa Fe get past Troy remember that SF beat Downey while both La Habra and Schurr both lost to Downey (all be it early in the season).

    Just some food for thought.

  • Schurr Dad

This is only the second time I have posted on these blogs. Both time the reason have been to say people are getting carried away. The last time it was “The Fan” but this time whoever is posting as this “freeway league rules” just has no clue. Cause believe me the boys on our team need no “bulletin material” to get up for this game. the way you make it sound we dont even need to show up. I don’t believe there will be a blow out either way it should be a great game. but most of all i hope the boys on both teams come out of this injury free.
GOOD LUCK TO BOTH TEAMS AND MAY THE BEST TEAM (SCHURR, IMO) WIN!!!!!!!

  • edwin8

this is my opinion after going to watch westminister vs shurr.. i really think that shurr vs whittier would of been a way better match up but looking at shurr’s d i would pick whittier’s running game to come up top .but that’s just me

i have one question when is the 605 game and who picks the players to play in the game

  • Chieftain Alumni

Oh please, give me a brake! DRL Watcher are you kidding me with your analogy of Troy. Come on.they dismantled the Del Rio At-Large (4th place) team who probably only made the playoffs due to weak 5-0 preseason schedule. Have you read any of the previous blogs? Dont let Troys win over La Serna give you any indication of the outcome of the game against Santa Fe. True Santa Fe had a hard time with Cals back but tell me who wouldnt going into the game blind as SF did. With that being said SF still was only beat by one point in overtime and if you do the math I believe Nick was held to his lowest yards per carrier ( 5.7 yards ) game as a Condor. If it turns out to be an offensive shoot out the game should be close but I have to give the edge to SFs defense for the win.

  • JiBBiiE

No beef with troy but im gonna have to take SF in this one! troy just seems like an offensive team to me. SF Seems like the whole package and will end Troy’s perfect season!

    SF 35 Troy 27

i think the team thats more disciplined and lays the hat on the other team will win in this match. Schurr is gonna end la habra’s season this week! La habra will know who the GREEN and GOLD are come friday night! They Can also say they lost to the 2006 C.I.F Champs!

    Shs 35 La Habra 14

Shs vs SF 2006 C.i.F Championship

  • El Rancho

some of your schurr players are a little bit to confident, I say you forget about this blog and concentrate at the task at hand, you guys beat a grigsby less cal hi by less than 10 points, whereas La Habra was up on them 35-0. Belief, hope, and heart can only take you so far, La Habra has all that + a dam good team with some excellent coaches and great players. La Habra has been a powerhouse in their division for years now and will continue to do it in the Southeast. Sorry Schurr kids, but La Habra will win this going away.

  • Just a Coach

Santa Fe vs. Troy – I would love to see Santa Fe win, however they have a curse on them, of never making it past the semi-finals, no matter how great of a team they have. Maybe this will be the year they break the cursethe Red Sox eventually broke there curse! I think it will be closer than expected but due to the curse Troy will come out on top.

Schurr vs. La Habra Again I feel this is will be a good close game, if Schurr come out to play, and plays their A game. Unlike they did against Alhambra. If La Habra goes to Schurr and take them lightly, as most teams have done this year, they will lose. When you look at the two schedules they both whooped Westminster, and they moth lost a close game to Downey. I think Schurr will upset La Habra.

  • SPHS FAN

I’m very proud of the St. Paul football team this year, but I can’t help looking ahead to next year with much excitment. 17 of 22 starters are underclassmem. St.Paul 24-West Torrance14

  • LHHS booster

As a La Habra parent I for one don’t take any team lightly and teach my son the same. I feel that anything can happen on any given day and that is why they still require that we play the game. That being said I have quite a bit of confidence in the La Habra team and have watched them get better every week. Just because it is our first season in this division everyone thinks that we can’t compete. If any team is under rated by the sports writers it is La Habra. No love from the pro South County OC Register and no respect from the L A County papers (including the WDN). I just will say this “watch the score board” too many weapons for most teams and on a mission to avenge a loss to Troy. IMHO LHHS 38-25 over Schurr.

  • Spartan Parent

la Habra booster I do agree with you as far as I don’t believe anyone is going to take this game lightly. As far as being on a mission I thinks our kids are on a mission of their own to gain respect. I don’t believe what you say that your underdogs with no press. I do believe you to be the favorite to win the whole thing(c.i.f)and I have all season. Good luck to your son and his buddies and like “schurr dad” said i hope everyone comes out injury free.

With all that said I’m pretty sure the coach is still going to want the boys to show up this friday.

Where did I bash Schurr? Am I wrong to be telling your kids to focus on the game and not on stupid Internet smack. They should be doing everything except trying to talk smack on the Internet. I did play the game, I played for the Ranch, 3-0 vs Schurr. You need to go to school genius, lets see twice as many games as we won this season, that would be 2 x 0, still equals 0, good one Einstein.

Spartan Parent, Any game without injuries is a sucessful game. As I always tell my boys “respect is earned” and you have made it to this round, that deserves respect. Win or loose any team that makes it this far has earned the right. At present I hope that your administration for the school hasen’t underestimated the fans of La Habra. When we heard that the game was going to be in your stadium we strongly encourage them to find a larger venue. Last week Cal underestimated us and didn’t have enough ticket takers (some of our people waited in line for up to 45 mins just to have there ticket taken, they only had one gate open), concession help (same thing long lines) and seating space (our fans were 4 deep at the fence after the stands were full). I estimate that we had about 2000 fans show up for the game, granted some of those were people in for the Thanksgiving vacation, but we always have more fans in the stands than the home team. I expect to have a great time and hope for a lot of excitement from both sides. May the best team win and everyone stay healthy.

I know its late but I wanted to get my predictions in before tonight’s games.

    Troy 35 Santa Fe 24

Should be a great game, I think Troy will pull away late in this one.

    La Habra 49 Schurr 20

To much talent and playoff experience within La Habra’s program for Schurr to post a real challenge

St paul 24 West Tor. 14

Why not? SP understands what they need to do for their team to win.

    WCHS 31 St. Margarets 28

SM has alot of talent but they are not physical. They have yet to see a back like Camarillo or even close to him this year. SM has lost in the semis the last two years and the heralds will make it three.

  • highlanderfan

It’s great seeing this blog grow as we get deeper into the playoffs. Any of these quality teams could probably beat the other on any given night.

    Here are my picks.

    Shurr vs La Habra

    These teams are very similar.
Great QB’s, very good running games. LH has a little more experience, Shurr has home field. This game will be very close and very hard fought.
    LH in a close one.

    St. Paul vs West Torrance

St. Paul’s defense has been playing light’s out, and I agree they are very underated in this area.
My heart says St Paul, but I think their great run ends here.
    West Torrance by a TD.

    SF vs Troy

This should be a great game. Troy’s offense is worth the price of admission. SF appears to be peaking at the right time. After years of being one of the favorites, this year they are flying under the radar.
Troy’s defense is suspect, but that offense is legit.
    Troy by 1.

    WCHS vs St Marg

WC will finally face some competition. It is very difficult to keep advancing with just one player carrying your whole offense. When a team slows down Camarillo, WC loses.
I think that this team has the coaching and the talent to do just that.

    St. Marg by 4.

Good luck and good health to all!!

  • wc alum

    Highlanderfan,

You are 100% right about the WCHS offense and St Margaret’s talent and coaching ability to slow down cammarillo. Something to watch for is the return of Kyle Clark from finger surgery. Saturday will be the first time are top two receivers will be in the lineup together since week one. Alex schwert(sorry if misspelled) returned a couple of weeks ago from injury, this tandem provides wchs with some real speed on the edges of the field. If the coaching staff can keep st. margarets defense honest by forcing them to respect the pass this will open wholes up for camarillo and alow him to get in the open field where he is deadly with the ball in his hands.

    WCHS Coaching Staff,

Do not forget what happened in the semis last year, we were one demensional and Cambell Hall shut us down. Put the ball in the air and we will win.
