Santa Fe by a field goal

  • Edgar Soto

    Spartans in a close one.

  • just a coach

i think after watching schurr take on la habra on fridays and doing a hell of a job…. i think they got what it takes to be the southeastern confernce champion!!!! i think santa fe is a good team and they did a good job holding troy…something no one has done!!!! but ill take schurr over santa fe….(10-7)

  • Jay

Santa Fe. Only because they recruit. I once asked one of their talented receivers who was on the team that lost to San Gabriel in the semi’s if he was recruited. He shrugged his shoulders at me. What does that mean? What happen with producing a championship with home grown talent? I respect the the El Rancho Team of 87-88. Made it to finals with home grown talent. Also the Whittier and Bell Gardens team who made it to the finals in the early 90′s. No recruiting. Just great coaching with no shortcuts!!

  • thetruth

honestly, to tell you the truth this is strange to me. Seeing these two teams come this far. Santa Fe wouldnt of came this far if it wasnt for those forfeits to set them up in the upper bracket and cal hi to be place in the lower bracket. That was unfair Cal Hi should of been one of the opponents in the cif southeast division championship. and to see schurr there that was amazing. I knew they were going to go far but not that far. From being a calhi fan i would like to see Schurr win it they deserve it with those incredible running backs the QB and the stunning defense. Santa Fe does not deserve this…they dont work as nearly as hard or with passion like the Spartans. Lets go Spartans show them who you are!!

  • JiBBiiE

    Schurr in a close 1!

  • CondorMom

Schurr-The criteria? Destiny and genetics. The only other time Schurr won the championship was in 1980 with a QB named Joey Jordan–who happens to now coach Joseph Orduno. His son, Rudy Jordan (tailback), has also been a great contributor to the team and it would be fitting for both Jordans to have the ring. Good luck!

  • LS grad

SF will lose to Schurr. i haven’t even seen Schurr play once. but i know, from the depths of my heart that SF will find a way to mess it up and have the championship just handed to them. they were very lucky that CAL messed up and had to forfit that game. CAL should be in this postion. so best of luck Schurr, and i hope that if you do lose SF you lose big. i mean huge.

ok honnestly i could care less about santa fe or schurr…but what i really want to know is how does it feel to have a victory that wasnt really thiers? if any players show up on here from santa fe please let me know..honnestly i wouldnt want to after all of that hard work Cal put in see santa fe walkin around with a ring talking trash its gonna be thier downfall…but just answer how does it feel living a lie?

  • http://swtness kevin ruiz

santa fe is much more talented and after seeing them against troy i believe they are very tough…maybe too much for schurr….my vote goes to the chiefs

  • The Dude

Bold – Indicates winner of Southeast Championship

    Schurr v Santa Fe

To all those that are still talking about Santa Fe’s ‘illegitimate’ victory…can it. It’s done, someone at Cal Hi screwed up and messed it up for the entire school.
Until someone wins without any disputes against the Chieftains, shut your traps. Disputes with the alleged ‘transfer’ rumors about Santa Fe..then do something about it.

Enough of this blackballing though, lets get down to the grit and grime. Schurr has one heck of a talented defense as was seen facing the Highlanders and shutting them down. Santa Fe made their way to the title game stopping Fullerton completely for a shutout, with a resounding victory vs Zion Babb-less Alhambra, butnothing to take away from that at all..especially when they proved to have the strength to push through Troy.

Well my pick goes as this…tough one to call but I give it to Schurr but regardless it should be a great one to watch..look for Santa Fe to go with the pass and Schurr’s offense will do some surprises of their own that the Chieftains won’t expect, but best of luck to everyone in this shindig!

    Final Score
    Schurr 27 : Santa Fe 17

  • 28 STRONG

I NEVER REALLY PAID ALOT OF ATTENTION TO ALL OF THIS STUFF, BUT WHEN A FRIEND OF MINE STARTED READING I JUST HAD TO RESPOND… WHEN A TEAM WORKS HARD AND PLAYS TOGETHER THEY ACCOMPLISH GREAT THINGS. SO FOR THOSE PEOPLE FROM CAL WHO FEEL SANTA FE DOESN’T BELONG HERE AND FOR THE REASONS THAT WERE STATED PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW YOUR SCHOOL DIFFERS. AND IF YOU CAN’T I’LL TELL YOU.

  • SF Alum

I’m tired of hearing Cal comlpain and moan about their game against SF, and the fact that they’re crying over transfers makes me laugh. I don’t hear them saying anything about their running back who “moved” into the district, by way of a hotel. Plus once you’re in the playoffs it’s anyones game. As long as your in you have a shot. As for the Del Rio leaugue championship, you guys should have made sure you had your ducks in order. Without your “transfer” RB you guys aren’t that good, ask La Habra.

  • highlanderfan

    To The Dude,
Injuries are apart of the game, and I hand it to Shurr, they played hard and smart football against LH and deserved to win. However, to say they shut us down, without mentioning that Morales got hurt and that our backup Soph. QB threw 3 picks
is not telling the whole story.

  • highlanderfan

I was just informed that Chris Morales LH’s QB actually suffered a broken ankle against Shurr. For those of you who were not at the game Chris went out early in the game and returned in the 4th quarter to lead LH to a TD to make the gamr 9-7 after a change of possesion he drove the team to midfiels before tome expired.

  • Don Wanlass

Those Calhi people really need to quit crying. You didn’t follow the rules, you got caught and got punished. If you really were a championship caliber team you would still be playing, no matter where you were seeded. As for this week’s game, I take Santa Fe. I don’t think they are going to let this one slide through their fingers. They are balanced and showed last week they can make necessary adjustments. I remember Schurr’s championship run in 1980 and expect to see a good game Friday night. Let’s everyone from the area go and represent this community, no matter who you’re rooting for.

  • justsomoedude

for all those here who support santa fe i would like to thank you, but to those bad mouthing and accusing them of false accusations i would like to say that it is totally unnecessary and a very big character trait of a sore looser.(cal hi)So i say to all who still want to complain about the forfeit to santa fe this, it was a great game first of all but to down a team because they were crowned victorious because of an illegal player is absolutely uncalled for, if cal hi was a btter team then why did they need both nicholas grigsby and louie gonzales? grigsby who was responsible for two touchdowns and gonzales for being on every tackle still just won by one point, a point that was deflected on a p.a.t. attempt so lets just think about it if we subtract those two players you have a 20-7 victory or maybe even more for the santa fe score, just some food for thought. And those who want to try and point out recruiting on santa fe’s behalf why is it that there has never been any cases or forfeits on their half due to these accusations? So now your probably saying to yourself theres no way that Romeo pellum is legal and a legit transfer right? Well if he wasn’t then they wouldn’t be in the finals now would they?

  • Chieftain Alumni

LS gradhow completely pathetic are you!! I thought you disappeared with your team and now youre back running your mouth. Are you honestly trying to say or imply that in some way Santa Fe had an easier bracket??? Cal barely got by Bell Gardens by a touch down and then got spanked by the Freeway League #2 team while their superstar could only watch. What in the world could ever make you think theyd get past the Almont and Freeway leagues #1 teams as Santa Fe did?

Dont be a hater! Both Santa Fe and Schurr deserve to be were they are by doing things right and working hard. Good luck to you both.

Santa Fe players..the entire weight of 50 years of this so called curse has been lifted off your shoulders as you enter a new chapter for SF football so go out Friday night and play this one for yourselves. You gave Coach Mahlstede a very memorable 200 victory but make 201 one that hell treasure FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Chieftain Alumni

And for all those that think Santa Fe somehow screwed over Cal High. If that was truly their intent they would have waited until week 9 of the season and killed their entire season.

Cal High made the payoffs despite the forfeit. Cal High lost in the second round. Cal High failed to make it to the finals. Deal with it!!!!!!!!!!

  • SF #6 Mom

I wasn’t going to leave a comment because no one had the heart to say my son’s name, but thank you justsomedude for mentioning that all of the recruiting talk is in regards to my son. I would like to say to all of you who believe that he was recruited HE WASN’T. We live in the Santa Fe area. When I took Romeo to enroll at Santa Fe we were looking to transfer to another school until my sister told me that she had read that Santa Fe was a good school academically and since it was our home school that he should probably stay there. We did not know anything about the football program or the record of Del Rio League and the coaches did not know who he was or if he could even play. He had to work hard and prove himself just as anyone else would and he deserves to be recognized as a great player playing with other great players on a great team within his community.

When we walked into the school I liked the atmosphere and Romeo immediately wanted to speak with the coaches so that he could get on the team. We had actually gone to another school in Cerritos to see what we had to do to transfer but I am glad we stayed with our HOME SCHOOL Santa Fe. I have another son who goes to Lakeside and will be at Santa Fe next year…So if any one has any questions of the validity of Romeo’s enrollment please feel free to contact the CIF regarding his eligiblity and if you don’t want to go that route blog back and I will invite you over for some eggnog and I’ll make sure to have the District map so that you can see that we are TRUE SANTA FE CHIEFS!!!

GO CHIEFS! Good Luck to our boys and Congratulations on a great season! Love You Guys ~ Karla Pellum

I think Schurr is satisfied with just being in the finals. Their victory over LH was their championship and i doubt they will be able to comeback and play that hard again. SF by at least two touchdowns.

  • former chieftain player

    to jay,

you respect the El Rancho & Bell gardens from the early 80′s??? you seem to forget that the only reason those 2 teams really dominated those years was in fact the just a few years prior they drop down a division in the whitmont league.

  • i hate santa fe

the fact is jack! o i mean Chieftain Alumni… you did want to screw cal, you new what the deal was before you played cal you waited until you lost, and then you did what you did. the fact is santa fe will kill Schurr! Schurr is over rated. i hate to say it but

    santa fe 41 schurr 7

people are not mad anymore cause everyone there understands what happen when you guys played cal

  • Spartan Parent

    “i hate santa fe”
I HAVE A STEAK DINNER THAT SAY’S SANTA FE WILL NOT BEAT US BY 34 LIKE YOU SAY. AND IF WE ARE OVERRATED WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT YOU (CAL) DID’NT WE BEAT YOU IN WEEK 4. I KNOW “YOU DID’NT RECRUIT YOUR TEAM(GRIGSBY) YET AND YOUR GOING TO SAY WOULD’VE, COULD’VE, SHOULD’VE. BUT UNLESS YOUR GOING TO GIVE PROPS TO THE TEAMS THAT “MADE IT” I GUES ALL YOU CAN DO IS KEEP ON COMPLAINING.

WHAT TIME IS IT THAT YOU PLAY THIS WEEK? I MUST HAVE MISSED IT IN THE PAPER

GOOD LUCK TO BOTH TEAMS THIS FRIDAY!!!

  • Chieftain Alumni

Say what you want about Santa Fe but from everything I heard coming out of SF is that Cal was not only warned once…..but TWICE to check that kids eligibility prior to the game. How stupid do you have to be to ignore the school he came from and play him anyways so just keep blaming SF for it. Im sure thats much easier than the truth.

Besides if Cal had been the team they thought they were this weekend would be a rematch but they werent so I guess they have to let it fester all summer and wait till next year.

Hates a pretty strong word. I hope that works out for you.

  • DRL

Wierd, Romeo Pellum’s myspace page used to say he was from Long Beach, but from what you are telling us he was Romeo Pellum from Santa Fe Springs at Long Beach going to Gardena Serra High School. Lets just take your word for it, nothing odd, we saw the same thing with Nathan Kimbrough a few years back.

  • SPHS FAN

Santa Fe and La Habra you have great football programs, now really test them with a game against St. Paul. FACT: Coaches Mahlstede and Mazzotta turned down St. Paul for future games. Iv’e been told that Murray knows of this. El Rancho stepped up and a fun night of football among friends, family and neighbors was had by all. Come on great football programs step up and challenge yourselves. Oh yeah, Santa Fe 24 Schurr 17

  • jay

    El Rancho:
    21 league championships
    3 CIF Titles
    1 National Championship (1966)

What the hell happened to that program?

  • DRL

keep lying, no one will ever believe Romeo Pellum showed up at Santa Fe because of its great academics, what a f’n joke. Did Nathan Kimbrough end up there because of academics also?

    good luck spartans!!!!!!!!

  • CondorMom

Hey! I scooped the WDN! Great article on the Jordans. Coach Jordan is one of the hardest-working and dedicated coaches in the area. He coached, not only his son but Johnny Potts, Isaac Garcia, Nick Alvarez, Drew Harris, Michael Ibarra, Abel Ramirez, and Joey Torres–who were all on the same team (in Jr. All-American Football)! Go Rudy! Good luck tonight!

  • Go Hard

The great thing about this game is that both teams have a lot of respect for each other. Most of the smack talking on this blog is coming from jealous CAL high fans. I’m hoping for a great game from the last 2 teams standing. Both teams have had to put up with a lot of smack talking from jealous schools. Santa Fe has had to deal with recruiting allegations and Schurr has had to deal with talk of being overrated, but the bottom line is both teams made it to the CIF Championship. Good luck to both teams and remember to leave it all on the field.

  • David Bomer

As the father of a Santa Fe player, I must add that the true measure of a champion is how he/she handles adversity. For you SF detractors, please believe that if there were discrepancies in the SF camp, CH would have brought them to the attention of the CIF. Let the kids settle it on the field and may the best team win. I also applaud the Mother of Romeo. I know it’s hard to sit back and watch people attack your son’s credibility and remain level headed. I wish Romeo all the best in his future endeavors. Run hard Chiefs and we’ll cheer just as hard!!!!
    (Good Luck David).

It wasn’t really funny the first time.

  • Anonymous

whoa!!Spartan Parent do you even know what you are talking about??? we missed how many tackles and you barely beated us!!! lol that is hillarious that is honnestly sad…we missed all of those tackles yet you failed to beat us badley need i say were a young team and we made mistakes against a very good running back i give Cano props

  • condorplayer

im pretty sure The cal football team hates santa fe anyway!! La serna isnt even a rival for me anymore i just straight out hate santa fe

  • Bundy

Ok Cal Hi you can claim the regular season title if you really think you deserved it but I’m sure Santa Fe players wont care one bit about a leauge champ patch that they get every year when there getting fitted for CIF rings!!!!

  • El Rancho

What happened to the program was Willie Reyna. He came in and did nothing with a team that should have been one of the top CIF contenders in 01. Since his arrival it has all been downhill. He destroyed a program that was rejuvenated by Greg Setlich. How you can be eliminated in the second round of the playoffs when you have the likes of Felix Esqueda, Steve Quijada, Ernesto Guerrero, Jamario McClain, Michael Brody, Carlos Rios and other great players is beyond me. Willie Reyna resigned last week, Del Rio and southeast beware. 1-9 to 10-2 showed what the ranch was capable of in 2000. The giant is about to awaken, the ranch is back.

  • Love those Condors

    Hey Bundy:
So now maybe those league champ patches are looking pretty good since you didn’t get the ring!?! Will they have an asterisk, just like your stats should?

  • BOB PASOS

    “C.I.F CHAMPS”

    SCHURR WINS!!!!!!
    SCHURR WINS!!!!!!!!!!!!
GREAT JOB BOYS, NOBODY GAVE US A CHANCE, BUT WE DID IT ANYWAYS. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER, DONT WORRY ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE SAY THEY CAN NEVER TAKE AWAY THAT C.I.F CHAMPS PATCH OR THE RING.

  • 97Spartan

Great job Spartans, I think Santa Fe was a little shocked by how quickly we scored after the muffed punt by Santa Fe

Orduno, Jordan, Valdez, and the rest of the team, you guys deserve this, the school, the fans, the parents, and alumni are proud of you guys, great job once again

  • SHS

NOBODY THOUGHT SCHUUR COULD DO IT….THE WAY THE SPARTANS PLAYED WAS GREAT TO SEE!!!!! YES ORDUNO AND SOME OTHERS HAD GREAT GAMES BUT IT WAS A COMPLETE TEAM EFFORT… DEFENSE PLAYED GREAT, SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYED GREAT, AND OFFENSE PLAYED GREAT. GREAT JOB SPARTANS!!! THE ENTIRE CITY OF MONTEBELLO SHOULD BE PROUD OF YOU.

  • Condor 60

    Go Hard,
Most of the trash talking has come from people talking trash on Cal. We have just defended ourselves, but most of it has come from others talking trash on us.

  • SF #6 Mom

    Congratulations to Schurr, great job!

Santa Fe, great season, keep your heads up and I look forward to watching you guys play great football next year!

Rome, you already know how proud I am of you. Keep looking forward because baby there are so many great things in store for you!
