QBs aplenty …

There are those who would argue that it wasn’t so long ago St. Paul
couldn’t find a quarterback on its roster.
This season, it appears there will be at least three, none of them
seniors, two of them sophomores and possibly a fourth, who will be
competing for playing time, and all of them reported to be blessed with
exceptional talent.
The players who have been working out with the Swordsmen are junior
Andrew Canales and sophomores Paul Lopez and Gabriel Encinas.
The fourth is sophomore Chris Willison, a transfer from South Hills who
was taking care of the necessary admissions paperwork at St. Paul
Tuesday afternoon.
Canales is a returning letterman who was a reserve and split time early
before taking over the starting role in midseason. Lopez, Encinas (who
transfer from Santa Fe) and Willison were standouts for their freshman
teams.
To halt — or at least slow — the rumor train, Willison reportedly also
considered Bishop Amat and at least two other schools. One of the main
reasons given for picking St. Paul was “the educational opportunities
and the overall program.”
There is no reason to believe otherwise.

All this talk about transfers, when in reality the kids that were coming back will get the job done. Our defense is what will win us a championship, not the transfers, they will help but not make the biggest diference. Lets face it our senior class is the strongest in recent years and others want to be part of it, you can’t blame them for jumping on the band wagon.

Nice to see an abundance of QB’s at SP.

Over on Aram’s blog they are already anointing this Willison kid the starter. I’m sure he’s talented but I guess they haven’t seen Canales yet this year. He’s bigger, has got tremendous arm strength, knows the system and was the starter during their run to the semi’s in D3 last year.

SP is loaded this year. They are going to surprise a lot of teams this year. I can’t wait till Servite comes into our house on Aug. 31 and leaves with a big L!

I was at the passing game yesterday @ SP and I will say those quarterbacks are tall boys with some strong arms, and if I’m correct on the transfer from South Hills he is a big boy, good for SP I know that school goes by tradition and may the best QB get the job.

  • SP fan

Roger, I did see the QB’s lining up yesterday and it seems as though St. Paul has their QBs covered. I beleive that Wilson did pick St. Paul for “educational purposes” it seems like things are looking up for St. Paul. Go Swordsmen.

What happened with Gallegos at St.Paul is he still on the team, I thought he might get a chance at Q.B. again this year.

  • footballfan

I was at St.Paul over the weekend for the first time my son attended the Youth Camp and I was really impressed it seems as though the coaching staff had a good vibe with eachother and that was really nice to see. I read your blog and understand they have some QB’s but I will tell you they have some freshman who are fast, I saw them at the camp and was really impressed. It appears that St. Paul has a few good years ahead of them.

    Yo, Football Fan:
Adrian Gallegos, who was St. Paul’s starting QB through four games last season, was replaced by Andrew Canales in Week 5. Gallegos moved to wide receiver/defensive back, and was impressive at both positions. He figures to be an impact player, especially at WR, this fall.

El Rancho’s freshman stand out running back is also at SP lol.

  • Vaq

Adrian Gallegos got hurt the 5th game of the year, and should have sat out the rest of the year. Instead he played DB/WR and was a true leader, as well as making 1st team all league DB, and 2nd team all area. He was not replaced as indicated, but rather showed true team spirit and kept playing.

  • BIG TEX

I have heard a lot of talk about St. Paul having a great returning defense didn’t they give up 260 points last year and end up with a 7-6 record. El Rancho only gave up 249 and they went 0-10. I understand St. Paul plays a difficult schedule but what is going to change this year. St. Paul will have another average season. They had better hope all this recruiting and blogging pays off.

  • Pico Dons

Rumors floating out of teh El Rancho camp that Galan and Aldecoa hate it at ER and are on there way back to SP. It was just a matter of time for this to happen.

  • vaq

St. Paul will not have a simular year as last year, with or without the transfers they will go further then last year. By the way, your assessment on El Ranch giving less points then St. Paul shows your knowledge of divisional football. All St. Paul did was player one of the toughest schedules around, local powers such as Santa Fe want nothing to do with them. Also, St. Paul was in the semi-finals in division 3 not 6 were they would run away with the tilte yearly.

  • Chieftain Alumni

    Hey vaq,

St Paul is a team that was barely over .500 the past 3 years. Explain to me how that equals running away with the title in division 7 (not 6) yearly? And if El Rancho is such garbage then why the heck are they on St Pauls tough schedule? I sure hope you guys dont think its some sort of a bye week for you as Edison and Fountain Valley did with Santa Fe. Note they didnt renew their contracts once the 2 years was over. Id fall over laughing if they beat you!!!!

I sure hope the coaching staff doesnt whine and cry when they get bounced out of SFs TOC tomorrow because it was a bit embarrassing as a football fan the way the SP coaches were acting as they were getting beat.

  • Dan

Have you or anyone else on this board had a chance to see Pioneer? I’m a West Covina fan but I’ve seen Pioneer in a few passing games this summer, I know the pads aren’t on yet, but they look like they have some excellent skill players, if they have good lines I’ll bet they will be
one of the better teams down there.
Does anyone have an opinion on them?

  • Hank

    Chieftain Alumni,

I’ve got a real easy answer as to why SP scheduled ER. It definitely wasn’t because they were the toughest team in the area it was because SF wouldn’t play them. Also, it has other ramifications. PR is a SP pipeline. What better way to convince PR kids that SP is the place for them than to beat ER. Exactly the same reason why Mahlstede won’t schedule SP. After beating SF it would open up the SFS to SP pipeline.

  • swordsmen observer

    Hey Chieftain Alumni,

Do you want me to remind you who St. Paul played last year?

Week 1- Bishop Amat (you’re telling me EL Rancho could beat them?)

Week 2-St. Bonnie (who were ranked 2nd in the state at the time)

Week 6-Loyola (not as great as they were once were, but always a challenge)

Week 7- Notre Dame (need I say more?)

And just look at their league compared to the Del Rio!

And look at their schedule this coming season..
Servite, Crespi, La Mirada, Amat..Who does El Rancho play? Cerritos? Bell Gardens?

I don’t see any D1 or powerhouse schools on that schedule.

  • vaq

    Hey Chieftain,

Did you forget we beat Downey which you lost to last year. In fact they did not score on us, stopped the runnung back which was to run all over us. Keep in mind we did this with an offense which was young and not experience. Forget the fact we had an all area guy leave us, lost our QB to injury, and played big time schools pre-league. It is good contracts are written every two years, that way SFS does not have to turn us down yearly. By the way coaches from SP were getting upset because we play tough football not flag like this passing league thing is. Put on the pads and play us, very simple solution to see who would win.

  • FootballDon

Ive also heard that Aldecoa and Galan have said some things about El Rancho and how its a different game played. They said theres alot more heart and the players care more over there and that the only reason they came was because of financial reasons. A friend of mine asked them what they thought about Ranch football and thats what they said. They said practices are much easier at the Ranch and St Paul coaches are much better

  • Chieftain Alumni

    vaq,

Get your facts straight! SF beat Downey and if you really want to go down that road then lets bring up the fact that SP only beat El Rancho by 14 while Santa Fe beat them by 28 only giving up one td. So your point is what???????

The point of the TOC is for team to come out and match up against other teams to see how they compare. Its a great tool for qbs and receivers to get their timing down and defenses to work on coverages and zones and in doing so to stay injury free. That is the reason for the points being awarded at the point of the catch and no running after the catch. Every team is sent a rules packet and well as having a coaches meet prior to the start of the tournament. If the SP coaches dont understand the rules or can’t seem to play by the rules maybe they should just stay home instead of crying in each and every game. It would really suck to lose a kid (ANY KID) because some team is out to prove how tough they are in a passing tournament.

  • El Rancho

Yes Aldecoa and Galan probably see ER football in that light right now because they come in at a rebuilding time where everyone who has attended ER has been part of the dark days of El Rancho football, only a few players truly bleed blue. I guarantee they would view this program differently had they been at the ranch about 4 or 5 years ago, they are lucky that Willie Reyna is gone from ER otherwise right now they would have probably been out of the ranch by now.

What else can be said after going from a CIF semifinal team to a 0-10 team, things are going to be different no doubt. The foundation is being layed for a big time program, and both of em (Aldecoa and Galan) will be a very important part of this resurgence of ER football. These past few years there was no support from the alumni, this year the alumni have really stepped it up, things are looking good and they just have to be patient and they will see the results they want.

2000 – Greg Setlich steps in and leads a previously 1-9 team to a 10-2 record, school spirit and morale are at an all time high. More importantly tradition is restored, finally ranch football is back to the way it should be, it was short lived but it showed the way things should be done at the ranch. If anyone thought that season gave you a glimpse of Ranch lore, you haven’t seen anything yet, good days are ahead for ER whether anyone else wants to believe it or not, the ranch is comin!!!

The reason santa fe and saint paul don’t play goes deeper than sants fe being scared. There is a history of the two teams having off the field problems. Because of that the teams agreed to not play anymore. Santa fe isn’t scared of anyone. You cant tell me that saint paul is any better than Edison Fountain Valley or Peninsula. Other issues have made this matchup not possible.

  • Hank

There are many teachers that send their kids to other schools or have. As for the almuni, all the successful ones leave to bigger and better things. We dont see any former ER superstars coming back, just the people who know they cant find anything better. El Rancho has really gone down as a school. Many Teachers are unhappy and leaving due to low pay and Unqualified and inexperienced teachers are being hired. Its starting to look like a Los Angeles city school. I passed by it a couple of days ago and they know have it all fenced up around it. It Looks like El Rancho Penitentary

  • elrancho

You dont see many ER superstars coming back because you are not around ER much. I can tell you I have seen em around, you were obviously not present at the fundraising event ER had back in June, there were plenty of former ER superstars there, including Bill Nelson who played QB at SC and in the NFL the Browns. Frank Mazzotta the Cerritos College HC was there, guys that are at Santa Fe, Ferny Fernandez, Ralph DeLaTorre, and Anthony Cruz from the ER 1988 CIF Finalist team were there. Alot of these former stars are not coaching at ER, but they were there to support ER football something they hadnt done the prior seasons.

Its no secret that the pay in the ERUSD is not too good and people are leaving, but thats something we have to live with. Even with all these new teachers, ER still manages to send off so many kids to college, the Star testing scores are going up every year and our decatholon teams always seem to be at the top.

ER has pretty much been open to everyone since it opened, no fences or anything, finally this year they fence it up and people talk sh*t. All the rest of the schools are fenced, Pioneer is, Whittier is, Santa Fe is, Cal Hi is, La Serna is, Bell Gardens is, Montebello is, please tell me of a school that is not fenced. There is so much doubters right now and I just cant wait for these kids to shut everyone up.

  • bigjer

You can choose to believe me or not but the truth is that off the field problems caused the game between St Paul and santa fe to be cancelled in the mid 90′s. The principal for santa fe at the time said that the we were not going to continue the contract. That principal now happens to be the superintendent of the school district. Off the field fights and other things make this not worth playing. Oh yea St paul is not better than Fountain Valley and may be as good as Penninsula. But we also played Orange Lutheran. We don’t duck anyone.

Funny thing Dave (El Rancho) is that none of those alumnis send there kids there. And they can afford a fence but not a pay increase. Last year me saying ER was gonna beat SF was just me being optimistic, realistically I really didnt think we were going to beat santa fe with pellum on the team, we just had no one with that speed.

  • Chieftain Alumni

    Pico Dons

Who are you kidding? There was almost a fight in last years TOC passing tournament when SF beat SP late in the day. When they realized SF was going to beat them their coaching staff started going nuts arguing with everyone and accusing the refs of cheating them. I tell you what I would love to see is when and if SPs new field ever gets built for Santa Fe to come break it in on the night of its dedication the way they did for Downey Highs in 06..49-0!!!! But thanks to SPs attitude it will probably never happen. SFs football programs record speaks for its self and they have nothing to prove.

  • murray

    Yo, El Rancho,
There’s never anything wrong with being optimistic.

  • vaq

You guys at SF just don’t get it, a simple answer to all this back and forth jabbing, is just play us. SP with its CIF championships I guess doesn’t speak loud enough to how many you have? Maybe after we win another this year, then maybe we may have the program for you guys to say lets do it.

Exactly El Rancho grads choosing to coach at other local schools. Its easy to blame Coach Reyna but this was happening way before he even came to the Ranch. Funny thing is you never seem to say much about Patrico even though he had a worst record than Reyna and more talent and size. Theres so much hype about the Marcus boys. I remember a few years back when ER was all wet of Crhis arroyo and Robert Contreras and how they would be supertars, but they werent all that. And you figure that when the job was open many almuni would want to restore what once was. But no, not one of them wanted it just the rejects who dont know anything. Talk about having blue pride huh. ER will never be anything. stop living in the past. You dont see El Toro people trying to relive their glory days. There are few teams that will always be good like The Mater Deis and The LB Polys. Other teams may win for a few years and do nothing after. Some teams will never ever be successful no matter what. And the Ranch falls into that category

  • blue pride

santa fe is not going be as good as last year…el rancho WILL beat them

  • El Rancho

Well, Patricio did win 2 League titles at ER, something Reyna never could do, the 2001 team should have been a for sure league title, I dont know what happened that year. When Chris Arroyo and Robert Contreras came in I wasn’t all “wet” over them, I dont even know if they had even gotten any playing time at St Paul as sophomores. Both Marcuses have gotten a good amount of PT, Galan was probably SP’s best corner. Of course this school will never be what it once was, thats just impossible, but this school can be consistently successful like the 80′s teams. Prior to the 0-10 2006 and the 2005 4-6 season, ER had been to the playoffs 5 straight seasons even with Reyna, 2 bad seasons where the HC lost control of the program do not make ER a team that will never be successfull.

  • vaq

    El Rancho,

Galan was not SP best corner, he played well but there are two corners that made all-league, and second team all-league that started over him. However I do believe he will help El Rancho, he is a tough kid. I also hope they do well, the history is there, and the kids from that area have football in their blood. Good luck to all the El Rancho kids and new staff.

  • AllPassons_Football

How are you saying that there are no alumni at The Ranch. Joe Ledesma is the perfect coordinator and is pretty much the head coach. Roddy Hiat’s an alumni and so if Louie Zamora and of course head coach Parsons.
The reason there weren’t more alumni applying for The Ranch job is y because administration is screwing them and the district doesn’t pay enough money.
Who are some of the alumni that coach at other places? I know that ER alumni who want to coach, always want to coach at The Ranch.

  • LAPreps

    Anonymous,

This year El Rancho has more alumni that have returned to coach there than at anytime in their history. Parsons (65), Ledesma (87), Madrid (81), Cervantes (72), Hyatt (70), Aguirre (94), Zamora, (01), and Palomino, (99). Can you tell me what other local school has as many alumni coaching for their program? When it came for the head coaching position, ERUSD is one of the poorest paying districts in the area. Had they not been, ER could have had their pick of solid coaches from all those that expressed interest, such as Gibson, Casagran, Ward, Davey Verdugo, Frank Mazzota Jr., Dusan Ancich, amongst others…

Also, how can you say in one sentence that El Rancho is living in the past, then say that El Rancho will never ever be successful? Look at the ER website (erfootball.com/records), they have listed their year by year record. As recent as six years ago, El Rancho had three legitimate Div I players on their team (McClain, Guerrero, Urrutia). Also, A.J. Toscano (Class of 2006) is the projected starter at Cerritos College, and is ranked as one of the top JC QB prospects in the West Coast. What does that say about Willie Reyna who lined him up at Tight End to begin his senior season!

El Rancho will never dominate football like they did in the sixties, few if any public schools can nowadays. But they can consistently compete in D7 division. Expect it…good times are a coming.

To express interest and to want the job are not the same.
Gibson already had the job at SC HILLS.
Mazzota jr is at La Habra I don’t think those coaches would leave there schools for ER
Casagran took a tour of ER with a friend of mine and did not like it. He did not go back to the second interview.
Ward was offered the job but said no thanks.
Verdugo yes he loves ER but the pay cut and to step down, I don’t think so.
Ancich was still at Cal hi at the time.
Good luck to McClain and Guerrero but they did not go to a DIV 1 school
So you can stop dreaming and just give us the facts. Good luck to all the teams in the DRL.

You can call me a dreamer all you want, but Guerrero, McClain and Urrutia were legit D1 kids. Urrutia did go to Kansas University, McClain and Guerrero screwed themselves because of their grades, but they were still legit d1 guys. Toscano is one of the top JC prospects in the country. To BIG HEAD,

    FACTS!!!!!!

Gibson,Casagran, Ward & Verdugo all applied! Gibson was offered the other job in OC before the interview process commenced at El Rancho. He had to withdraw…Casagran did tour the school with Jason Carlin, and did apply, and was granted an interview. But he later backed away, due primarily to salary issues at El Rancho. He later accepted a job at Contreras High in Los Angeles. Ward applied, was offered the job, then turned them down, due to money! Verdugo applied, but he was unable to make the transition, given salary issues as well.

    Also…

Its a fact, Dusan Ancich called the school to inquire about applying, while still at Cal Hi.

McClain and Guerrero did not attend DI schools, I didnt say they did. I said they were DI prospects, as they were both recruited by DI colleges across the country.

    BIGGY

Hey buddy, I got no problems with Jason. He’s a good guy. Not a very good coach, imho, but a good guy nonetheless. I dont know what happened when he took over at Roosevelt. After five solid years with Casagran. That program took a dive fast! Im sure it didnt help that Casagran’s last year had some damn good players, like Adewale, Owens, Sanchez and Cortez who all graduated.

BTW, Im very relaxed, thx! Just dont like people to throw out inaccurate information, and misquote me. Dont worry, I forgive you.

The unfortunate part of the whole Guerrero and McClain issue is that they both were being recruited. Yet their grades, and issues with Willie at ER, resulted in Guerrero quitting mid-season, and McClain getting benched! Oh well…its all in the past now…

Good luck to you…Should be a good year, with solid competition in the DLR League.

    REDD,

There were obviously some issues there. How is it that these two performed well in 2000, and then had problems in 2001 once Willie arrived. I actually liked Willie as a person. He wanted to win, was a descent x’s and o’s kind of guy, but had horrible communication problems. He just could not ingratiate himself with the kids at El Rancho. This led to discipline issues, many kids not wanting to play for him, and the eventual decline of the program. I agree that its a two-way street, however that is why I feel that coaches just cant be great football strategist. They have to be that along with great communicators, motivators, conditioning experts, psychologists, etc…in order to successfully run a program.
