Del Rio League FB: Who are these guys?

I know, I know, it’s still early.

It still deserves a mention.

Seven games into the season, the Del Rio League is 6-1.

And the leader is Pioneer (2-0).

And the one loss is six-time defending DRL champion Santa Fe’s.

Three of the six league members are ranked among the top 1-0 in this week’s CIF Southern Section, Southeast Division (VII) poll: La Serna (3), California (4) and Santa Fe (7).

Two others, Pioneer and Whittier, received votes.

All this is big because the Del Rio League doesn’t get alot of support among the voters, in any sport for that matter. This is especially true when it comes playoff time and the brackets are set up.

Last week, the DRL guys outscored their opponents, 156-91, perhaps not the most impressive ratio, but still, that’s an average of 26-15 per game. And that’s more than just decent in anybody’s league.

In this week’s CIF-SS polls, eight of the area’s 13 teams are ranked among the top 10 teams in their respective divisions. In addition to La Serna, California and Santa Fe, they are: Schurr (No. 2, Southwest/VII), Cantwell (No. 3, Mid-Valley/XI), La Habra (No. 5, Southeast/VII), St. Paul (No. 7, Western/III) and Whittier Christian (No. 8, Northeast/XIII).

In addition to Pioneer and Whittier, La Mirada (Southwest) also received votes. The only area teams left out of the polls were El Rancho, which won its opener over Cerritos, and Montebello, winless in two games.

Which area teams has the staying power to remain in the polls?

Well you know Santa Fe, St. Paul, Cal Hi and La Habra are all mainstays on those polls…it will be interesting this year to see which teams in the area step up to have a quality season just like Schurr did last year

  • BLUE BLOOD

I agree on what SF Alum picks are I also think The Ranch will be stepping up this season.

  • delriohardball

Very true about he lack of respect for the DRL. I’m more of a baseball guy, and last year La Serna played D1 and D2 schools during a fall league, and LS competed well aginst El Dorado, Servite, Cypress, El Modena, Katella, etc., while all I heard was how weak the DRL supposedly was. Then in league, where I saw each team play several times, I was suprprised to see that the teams were similar to the bigger name schools, and LS finished 4th. And then in CIF, Cal Hi, with an average team, talent-wise, went deep in CIF, beating Quartz Hill and other suppsedly better teams.

Maybe what it will take is a DRL team getting to the CIF finals, at least, to get the respect it deserves.

I’m sure it is the same in football. There are good athletes everywhere. Should be a great year in the DRL in football and the other sports.

  • fan

it is amazing that schurr is ranked number 2. that really makes me laugh!!!! schurr is not that good and is only get ranked because of last year. schurr will be brought back to earth against DOWNEY. Downey is not a great team but will destroy little schurr

  • blue pride

i dont know about santa fe being a mainstay

  • Big Red

You know, it’s nice to see the DRL teams getting some well deserved press, especially WHS. They are a team that has the presence and the parts in place to be the sleeper of the DRL this season. While the other schools in the Whittier area are getting the publicity, the Cardinals are just doing what they do, going out and playing fundamental football. And the fans, well they are getting the buzz and filling the bleachers on Friday nights. So, good luck to all the DRL Squads and a special “Hoorah” to the Cardinals and their fans! Go Big Red!

  • HSFBFN

Schurr will win by at least 20!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Fan

Downey is always too big and too fast for Schurr to handle. They beat Schurr’s All-World team last year and will smash them again this year. This will bring Schurr and the community back to reality.

  • Ol’areaFBfan

Roger, Being a nearby resident of Whittier College. I understand there are some area high school FB players on the roster at Whittier College. Can you provide some insight on this year’s team outlook? Will this published in the WDN anytime soon?

  • Anonymous

Looks like Jack has already given up on this year and is looking to next year when his grandson takes over as QB as a freshman. Saw him coaching the Pop Warner team the other day.

  • BIG RED

    Murray
Who picks the teams in the Cif polls. Is it coaches, writers, or people who work at the Cif office. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW. Can you give me the answer.

  • SF Alum

    blue pride,

    are you serious!!!??

Santa Fe is always in the playoffs and had won 6 straight Del Rio League Championships and I think 8 out of the last 10 years so correct me if i’m wrong “blue pride” and Roger Murray, but I know that Santa Fe is always ranked on top of the DRL, The Whittier Daily News Polls and the CIF polls…
    Where has El Rancho been???

This year you guys talk big…and i hear you an ok team…well then prove it…and beat Santa Fe for once then you can bash Santa Fe Football

  • blue pride

    sf alum

whos one more cif football titles or should i say who hasnt won any

  • ER

    ER fans,

When was the last time er has won a championship stop living of the past glory days. That was when Ford and Northrop were in Pico Rivera. Say bye bye to all the big white boy ballers. you guys will never even shadow the past succes ER once had.

  • Friar Guy

    To CIF Champ 2006,
Your post has so many typos and grammatical errors, I hope you are 10 years old. If not, please pick up a book. Holy Moly!

  • blue pride

    sf alum

tell santa fe to win a title before you guys talk

  • SF Alum

    blue pride,

Looks like pigs stopped flying because friday night guess what happened you lost for 14th time in the last 15 games….but you know what forget about all that lets not live in the past…Like dwelling on this championship i guess you won before i was born…

    I don’t care about it!!!

What I know is that now, in the present Santa Fe Football is one the top programs in this area…you know that, the DRL league knows that, and so does everyone else…

Remember the DRL title goes through Santa Fe… gotta beat the champ to be the champ…but remember in El Rancho’s case that also includes actually winning a league…

and did i mention no one cares about your CIF title from a long long long time ago…wait i think my grandpa cares…o my fault he doesnt dwell on the past

    Hey Big Red

It sure look like the Pioneer’s runningback out played you running back this week. Now maybe you can stop TALK S**T.

BLUE PRIDE I THINK YOUR G**…..EL RANCHO SUCKS AND ANYBODY WHO PLAYS FOOTBALL FOR THAT SCHOOL….I WOULD NOT EVEN WERE MY JERSEY ON FIRDAY TO SCHOOL IF I WERE YOU…..TRANSFER TO CAL OR SANTA FE…..UR TALK IS CHEAP …..

I am not a hater I wish those boys well. But it is one game, and against not a weak team but a VERY weak team. Remember last year when Pioneer was beating up on those weak teams, and were ranked in cif and then played Whittier, and lost the next few games. If it was not for ER being so bad you might have lost the next 5 games. The only tough game they have is Cypress and then league. So go ahead and get all the stats you can against those weak teams, we will see what you do against the good ones. Keep that in mind Murray.
Same thing goes for La Serna and Cal hi.

and well a BIG “HOORAH” to the MIGHTY MIGHTY TITANS!!!
    Lets play football baby!!!!

  • LAPreps

    ER,

No public school and few private schools can shadow the successes of the ER program of the past. So its silly to say that ER cant do this. But its interesting to note what they have accomplished, (an accomplishment, no other public school in the area can come close to):

    *Six CIF championship appearances.

    *Three CIF championship titles.

*Most wins by a High School in California (1960-1969).

*Most players invited to play in the shrine game, upto the mid 1970′s.

*Dozens of High School All-Americans such as Egan, Pope, Drake, and Bailey.

*Consistently had 8-14 players receive athletic scholarships, during the 1960′s.

*Ranked Number 1 in the nation in 1966.

Although the demographics of the city of Pico Rivera has changed through the years. Your comment does not take into account Latino players from the school who made an impact for the program. Players such as Rich Camarillo, Jim Arellanes, Ruben Quintero (started on the line of the 66 title team), Johnny Chavez, WR and QB for the 69 team. Ynez Rosas, starting QB for the 1961 team. Steve Nieto starting WR for the 1968 CIF title team, Dennis Tarango, starting running back on the 1969 team. In fact during the sixties the team was comprised of at least 30% latinos, many of them starters on those championship teams.

    Next time do your research…

    LAP

    Those were in the 70′s

    great stats

    but in the 70′s

  • Wayne Campbell

    ~LAP

And the Raiders were great once upon as well….what’s your point?

To quote Garth Algar..LIVE IN THE NOW!

  • elrancho

If your saying live in the now, then lets forget about Santa Fe’s 6 straight league titles and lets also forget about ER’s 0-10 season… its not that simple is it?

  • FAN

Hey CIF fan.. Whose your daddy?? 44-23.. DOWNEY.. DOWNEY.. DOWNEY..

  • SF Alum

    hahaha

    el rancho would say that,

    “lets forget about 0-10″

but you still are not that good

  • Chiefman

    You are confused El Rancho,

We are talking about present day activity and for your Dominguez Hills ed obviously you dont get the fact we are the defending 6x Del Rio League Champs….uhhh that is now.

  • LA HABRA PRIDE..

OH WAIT DIDNT SCHURR BEAT SF…..THE CHOKE ARTIST……HAHAHAHA SF THE DEL RIO LEAGUE IS A JOKE….WHENS THE LAST TIME SOMEONE FROM THE DEL RIO LEAGUE WON THE CIF TITLE IN THE 80S OR SOMETHING….EL RANCHO SUCKS…..AND THATS THE PRESENT…..

  • elrancho

Well obviously that is why I put “its not that simple is it?” Are you some kind of stalker or something?

  • Chieftain Alumni

    Hey La Habra Pride,

In the 80s it was called the Whitmont League.bonehead!

Talk about choke artist. Wasnt it LH that got bumped up a division and was supposed to run away with it after dominating in the previous division? But as memory serves didnt Schurr beat LH as well???? Not to mention LH getting beat by Troy, which SF beat to get to the finals???? If you were at the game looks like you had the same view I didfrom the stands!!!!!!!!

Dont mean to knock on the LH program but rather on the crap that just popped out of that blogger pie hole. Coach M has built a quality program and props to beating South Hills last week. And if LH pride had brain 1, he would have bashed on SF for never figuring how to beat SH. I cant wait for the day these two teams finally match up.

    And your point is ?
I still stand by what I wrote.
Your running back did not face the speed and size of Verbum Dei. But good luck anyway

  • ryan

I’m not a Santa Fe, El Rancho or La Habra fan. But really i agree with the guy below me didn’t La Habra loose to Schurr also. Oh and didnt Troy the league champion from your league loose to Santa Fe. I didn’t see anyone from La Habra’s league in the finals. I guess the Del Rio league isn’t the joke the guy making the comment is ha ha. Absolutly ridiculous. Good look La Habra, Santa Fe and El Rancho. Don’t worry La Habra I won’t hold u responsible for that moron.

  • Anonymous

    Hey Big Red!

Was the running back for the Cardinals at the Verbum Dei game?????? LOL!!!!

  • randthaman

The two transfers El Rancho got from St. Paul(Marcus Galan,Marcus Aldecoa)just might make the differnce in beating a team like Santa Fe this year.
