HOOPS — Cards, Chiefs in Driver’s Seat

Alright folks, the second half of Del Rio League play kick starts this afternoon and evening. I’ve reposted the standings here as well as in boys and girls soccer. Who will take the title?

In boys basketball, Whittier is on top. But will the Cards stay there? I don’t think you can count out La Serna or Cal-Hi. Is Pioneer a legitimate postseason contender? What about Santa Fe? How good is El Rancho’s Albert Keil, the DRL’s leading scorer?

Boys Basketball                                                  Tonight’s Games (All @ 7 p.m.)

1. Whittier (11-9, 4-1)                                                 La Serna @ Pioneer
2. California (9-9, 3-2)                                                 Santa Fe @ California
3. La Serna (10-11, 3-2)                                              El Rancho @ Whittier
4. Pioneer (7-15, 3-2)
5. Santa Fe (5-11, 2-3)
6. El Rancho (5-14, 0-5)

In girls basketball, Santa Fe certainly looks strongest. However, the Cardinals seem highly motivated since their loss to the Chiefs. Should the league just give the MVP to Whittier’s Loren Gurrola already? What about Santa Fe’s Alexus Guerrero? Can Cal-Hi recover after a poor showing versus Whittier? Can La Serna, El Rancho or Pioneer get back into the playoff hunt?

Girls Basketball                                               This afternoon’s games (All @ 5:15 p.m.)

1. Santa Fe (15-7, 5-0)                                           La Serna @ Pioneer
2. Whittier (12-9, 4-1)                                             Santa Fe @ California
3. California (11-9, 3-2)                                           El Rancho @ Whittier
4. La Serna (7-14, 2-3)
5. El Rancho (7-10, 1-4)
6. Pioneer (5-15, 0-5)

In boys and girls soccer, can any team dethrone the La Serna girls and El Rancho boys. The California girls have their shot on Monday. Will the La Serna boys win over El Rancho on Monday knock the Dons off their drive toward another league title? Or will El Rancho shake off the loss and go undefeated the rest of the way?
