Barber’s Tenure at Cal-Hi Comes to an End

California High School boys basketball coach Brian Barber confirmed that he recently resigned his post as head coach after 10 years.

Barber spoke to the paper on Wednesday evening, days after he confirmed to Del Rio League coaches that resigned at the all-league meetings.

Barber cited a need to spend more time with his family as the chief reason behind his decision.

The Condors won two DRL titles in the Barber era, the last a co-league championship with Santa Fe during the 2007-08 season.

While Barber’s team failed to make the postseason this year, losing its last three games in a row, he said that didn’t weigh on his decision.

Personally, I’d like to wish Coach Barber the best. While there are some who didn’t agree with his coaching, it’s hard to find a better ambassador than the area’s best-dressed coach.

Coach Barber is a class act. Puts alot of energy into his coaching and teaching duties.
Too bad majority of high school student-athletes don’t!

Spend that time with your family. Best of Luck Coach!

I would like to thank Coach Barber for his years of dedication to the CalHi Basketball program! My son did well under Coach Barber and he regards him highly as a coach and person. Together, my son and Coach Barber had the team that advanced the farthest in CIF Playoffs from Del Rio in the past several years!
Success is a relative thing–some see it in wins and losses ONLY while others are aware of the other aspects. Coach Barber taught my son the strength of commitment and the value of a man’s word, as well being a champion.
    Best wishes, Coach Barber!!

guess having all that talent not doing much wit it really got to him.. good luck to him.. glad he got out why he could cal looks bad for the next couple years

  • DRL Fan

What is Cal gonna do now for a coach? Are they gonna hire within or post opening? Any insight Andrew?

  • high school sports fan

Look for Calhi to elevate their JV coach to Varsity- Jason Van Dyne- he is a good young coach who is looking forward to the opportunity to be a head coach- calhi will not go outside.

  • LOL

Thanks for the self-promoting post, Coach Van Dyne!

  • Sp

when has Cal’s basketball been any good, never, so what is everyone worry about? barber was a yeller and a non-achiever. the dead give-a-way was, I want to spend time with my family,,,,,oh what’s their (own family) names? LOL!!!

  • high school sports fan

hey SP FAN-when has your team been any good?? not very often-you play in about the lowest playoff division and play weak teams in a weak league- you are just a typicla no class st. paul fan -just another reason no one in the whitter area respects your sports program!

  • Mr. Observer

    Very nice guy, terrible coach.

  • St.Paul

Cal sucks in football too, our Swordsmen (D. Ancich) took the school from the bottom of the DRL to the top, coach Arnold of cal-hi was given this graduating squad. T.Jones is the brother of whom?…from where? It all go’s back to St.Paul, that’s why cal can’t sign anybody. Arnold would not sign to play us this year and we both had an opening but he said no.

  • Cal Fan

You’ve already been embarrassed enough, he doesn’t want to make it worse. He embarrassed junior last year with a far inferior team & he would do the same to senior. Put the dagger in the football program, it’s over. Hell, put the dagger in the school. Adios

  • Anonymous

we starting a new chapter, but cal hi could and would never play us, afraid; is killing your school. St.Paul would beat any school in whittier.

  • Anonymous

That is a fact, Jones is Grigsby’s half brother. Now lets see what happens with pure Arnold players.

  • COME ON MURRAY

    ANDREW !!!
The divisional realignment proposals are out. The other papers are talking about it, but you. Did Murray come back. This side of town is so slow on sports news.

  • Cal Fan

You should be able to beat any school in Whittier genius, you get to recruit players & offer tuition. I don’t think there is too much tuition being paid these days though, your flat A## broke! Your record over the last 2 years reflects that.

The fact that you talk smack against the Del Rio shows your ignorance. Try calling out the schools that are on an equal terms ie: Servite, Amat, Mater Dei etc. We all know your not bright, but your smarter than that, I think.

Arnold over at Cal will be fine, a little young next year but, they will still compete for league due to their coaching. The next 2 after that, they will be strong Swordie.

  • SP DAD

Hey Cal Fan. Servite, Amat, Mater Dei are not in our league. They haven’t been in years. Those are preseason games.

  • Cal Fan

    SP Dad

The point is they are PRIVATE schools just like YOU. SP calling out Whittier schools shows how low the program has sunk and where it’s heading.

  • Swordsmen Alum

    People,

Let’ get a grip. Look, I’m a St. Paul alum and I’m very proud of my alma mater and how it has survived difficult economic times. I look very fondly on my times at St. Paul, both as a student and as an athlete.

First, I think it’s disgusting how some (not a majority) of Swordsmen “fans” represent our institution by running their mouths when they shouldn’t. On the other hand, comments like those made by “Cal Hi Fan” are just as disgusting. I went to a major university out of St. Paul on academics, so St. Paul produces smart kids. But, at the same time, St. Paul has a rich history of athletic success, and no matter how far away those days are (even before my own), it’s more than a lot of area teams can brag about. So it deserves respect without belittlement. To think otherwise is pure insanity.

Let me finish up by restating that while our our school and some of our “fans” are not perfect, making fun of the fact that it is a private school struggling during recessionary times is not only ignorant, but disrespectful and disgusting. The fact that it’s still standing and producing students on character defeats poisonous ideas like that spread on this blog. Again, that’s more than any other area school can brag about. I don’t see any “Harvard-Westlakes” in the greater Whittier area…

    Swordsmen Alum,
You need to get a grip. St Paul had been on a race to the bottom for eight or more years now, whats enrolment now 600. People in general dont run away from a good thing. So, SP catastrophic slide has nothing to do with recessionary times as you use as an excuse. Get a grip because youre falling the ground isnt rising, its a cliff, Lol.

    Ex-..with love Swordsmen Alum;

This year, is to accomplish a much improved St.Paul, because tuition will have to be raised regardless, our biggest economic source is obviously our football games, without that were doom, a dreadful fate, an official death judgment from our own Catholic Christianity.

The archdiocese will not help, school is demeaned and too far-gone (despite our clean up) according to the Catholic Clergy…OURSPBELEIF… Students are still better off at SP than most public schools because we still care for the child. Public education doesnt care for the kids. Listen the truth hurts, students are our future so facilitate and let us continue the future education of our children.
