It’s Official — Drake Griffin is a Highlander

Highlanders football coach Frank Mazzotta confirmed that former St. Paul running back Drake Griffin has been working out with the team (which is totally legit) after his transfer in late January.

However, visions of Griffin in the clan’s midnight blue and white this fall are not a done deal.

For one, Mazzotta said Griffin still has to be cleared by the CIF-SS office. As of today, Griffin has not even filed a transfer with the CIF-SS office.

Griffin was St. Paul’s leading rusher last season, totaling 943 yards on 121 carries (7.8 average) with 11 rushing touchdowns and one fumble.

The 5-foot-9, 204-pound junior was also the team’s second-leading receiver with 17 receptions for 141 yards. He was recently awarded the Charles Martinez Memorial (Best Back) Award at January’s St. Paul football banquet.

But whatever happens to Griffin, his departure will likely be more of a bust to St. Paul than a boom to La Habra.
