Fear the Cardinals???

In case anyone hasn’t been paying attention to the first two games of Del Rio League baseball play, one team has definitely stood out.

It’s not California….or La Serna….or even El Rancho

It’s Whittier!

How bout dem Cardinals. Whittier opened with an impressive 2-0 win over co-league champion California on Friday behind a three-hit shutout from starter Andrew Gomez.

The Cardinals followed up that effort by rallying from a 7-0 hole in defeating other co-league champion La Serna, 10-9, on Wednesday.

The Lancers even led 9-3 by the middle of the fifth before Whittier erupted for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning in taking the game.

I know it’s only two games into league and no time to start crowning champions. However, the accomplishment can’t go overlooked.

Whittier was 1-5 versus the duo last year and has not won more than two games versus each in over five years. In fact, the last time Whittier beat both California and La Serna in the same season was the 04-05 season.

Not too bad.
