Three locals announced their collegiate commitments over the last couple of weeks.
Whittier Christian senior libero Emily Atwood committed to Fordham University last Thursday, as was confirmed by her mother Annette Atwood.
Emily Atwood was a part of the Heralds’ big turnaround the last two years, which has resulted in two Alpha League titles, two CIF-Southern Section Division 4AA title-match appearances and last season’s championship.
Atwood was a Daily News’ two-time first-team selection and is expected to sign soon.
La Serna boys cross country runner Matt Okiishi, a Daily News’ first-team selection, actually recently signed his letter of intent to attend Maryville University of St. Louis. Okiishi will be competing in cross country and indoor/outdoor track at the university.
Okiishi was one of the area’s few CIF-Southern Section Divisional Finals qualifiers.
Lastly, although it is a bit of old news, California girls soccer coach Brian Bordier called to remind us that senior midfielder Jasmine Martinez also committed to the University of Houston.
Martinez was a co-Del Rio League MVP last season and finished this year as the league’s top scorer with 19 goals and 11 assists.
Congratulations to all.
