Changes About at La Mirada

La Mirada High School athletic director Kim Brooks confirmed openings at head coach in two of the school’s premiere sports – boys basketball and girls soccer.

Brooks confirmed five-year boys basketball coach Larry Kaupang, who led the Matadores to their first Suburban League crown since 1982 two years back, has decided to step aside.

Brooks credited Kaupang with “strengthening the program while maintaining a high level of success.”

The position has been flown both in the district and out and the interview process begins Thursday with 10 candidates.

As for girls soccer, second-year coach Kim Smith also stepped aside due to a “time commitment” with her job, according to Brooks.

In two years, the Matadores reached the playoffs twice and even won their first Suburban League title this year for the first time in years.

Both positions are currently “walk-on” jobs.

There was also a CIF-Southern Section listing for a girls volleyball coach. Apparently that’s a mistake as Linda Reich is expected to return next season.
