El Rancho’s 2010 Football Schedule

It’s time to talk a little El Rancho football. With the paper today is Dons head coach Rick Zepeda, who is embarking on his third go-around with Blue Pride.

5243-dons1.gif

Zepeda, a St. Paul High and LSU alumnus, gave a 15-minute overview on this year’s schedule, including on early changes and his expectations of the games.

Here’s the podcast -

Zepeda Interview.wav

Here’s the schedule -

Week 0 vs. Los Altos
1 vs. Northview at Covina District Stadium
2 at Bell Gardens
3 at Montebello
4 BYE
5 vs. Fontana
6 vs. La Serna*
7 at Pioneer*
8 vs. California*
9 vs. Santa Fe at Pioneer*
10 vs. Whittier*

*signifies Del Rio League Play

Commentary: I joked with Zepeda that he must have known about the turmoil at Los Altos and Northview last year, which is why he scheduled two games against first-year coaches to start off the season. He responded “it might look that way but believe me I had no clue about what would happen at those schools.”

Zepeda has an interesting nonleague schedule capped with a rare match-up versus Fontana. As for league, the Dons are like several DRL teams in rebuilding seasons in a wide-open year. I erred on Week 9 in the podcast saying El Rancho was hosting Santa Fe (you can’t always trust maxpreps). The Chiefs are at home versus the Dons. I think if El Rancho can go 2-3 or 3-2 in the preseason (not an easy task), they’ll have enough momentum to grab a playoff spot and maybe even win league.

their program is a joke. you should of scheduled St. Paul too.

  • Steve

The Fonana game will be interesting, good job Rick.

  • El Rancho

Man, Can’t wait for that Los Altos game!

  • ER PRIDE

    Anonymous,
Granted El Rancho isnt the football program it once was or when I played, but Coach Zepeda has done a good job gettin the program in the right direction again in his 1st two years. He been getting community involvment and getting people around the community excited about football again, which was lost over the years. Under, Zepeda, he has got a player each of his two years earning scholorships to play football at DII schools. Thats 2 more than alot of other schools in the area. El Rancho is returning several players that surprised alot of teams last year. I think any team that takes the Ranch to lightly will be mistaken this year. So get to know a program and whats going on before opening your ignorant trap.

  • Robert

The Fontana centre from last year #79 65 295lb has graduated, but #1 Antwione Holmes, is still there and this is his senior year. Yes, it should be interesting. GO DONS!

  • Steve

Oops, spelled Fontana wrong, I guess I was excited. Agreed Coach Rick is awesome and St. Paul should be proud of him and his family, their all football people. FoHi, awesome!

The Fontana game will be an exciting one, back in the day their team was the source of tremendous pride in the community. On Friday nights, much of the town shut down as more than 10,000 maroon and white clad fans filled Steeler Stadium for heroic battles with rival schools like Eisenhower, Redlands, Pacific, as well as Colton. To this date, Fol.Hi Steelers fans love their team, as they should.
El Rancho will need to match their enthusiasm that night, so a large crowd is in order on our part. End of quote…..

  • ERDons

In my book, the man (Rick Z) is walking on water, because hes not just a football coach he truly cares about kids and all the kids. Every coach, football program, school desires to win but not all crave to teach and lead all young men they come in contact with, Rick does. We at the Ranch are very auspicious to have him as coach.

  • Oh Give Me a Break

El Rancho is pretty desparate if they are putting fontana on a pedastal. they have won 8 games in 6 years. give me a break.

  • Cal

i did not like coach zamora or large ramirez who coach at Cal last season because they are er guys, el rancho did play us the toughest last year in league. The win and lost colum will be the same this year er. even with all of Ancichs players officially gone now the result will be the same.

  • BG Lancer

Dont forget the Black and Blue game vs Bell Gardens always a good one lots of history between the schools.

  • ER PRIDE

    TO CAL,
You call yourself a Cal Fan? Seriously. Not liking Zamora or Ramirez because they are former ER guys. I’ll tell you this, Zamora puts in alot of hours and work for whatever program he coaches for. His work ethic earned him a spot as the D-Coordinator for Los Altos. Ask any coaches from the Cal Staff they would speak highly of him and what he does. And Iv seen the Cal players respond well to him. Its funny all you Cal Hi Fans flip flop so much on your team. Last year, Cal Fans were on here talking so much crap about the Cal Coaches at the beginning of the season for dropping a few games. You Cal Fans even talked about getting rid of Head Coach Arnold(A Former El Rancho Coach by the way-Do you not like him either?). By end of the season, you were praising the Cal Coaches on getting the team to Semi Finals. Once again, another IGNORANT blogger opening up their trap.

  • Dons

Well Cal, thats why we get to play the game! Cannot wait, and it cant come fast enough.

  • Anonymous

Oh yeah, The black & blue game I played in it and son & nephews played in it and soon enough my grandsons will play in it.

  • Anonymous

    Dude….those eyes creep me out!!!!

  • True Don

He better win this year or else they should bring an ER alum to coach our team. I hate SP and everything it produces, he should go back to the hole a crawled out of.. BLUE PRIDE!!!

  • CalMoreLikeGal

Jeez, these Cal people like to complain a lot. Huge mouths for people with no tradition. Johnny Come Lately’s are not legends, bro. You’re nothing but a mark.

“CAL”? more like GAL. because you whine like a bunch of women.

  • IT’S ALL GOOD

Give me a break:…. Citrus Belt League (C.B.L.) is a high school sports league in the Inland Empire region within the Greater Los Angeles area of California’s CIF Southern Section. It was the only Division I league in the San Bernardino-Riverside County area until 2006 when CIF Southern Section releagued it to Division II.

Redlands East Valley High School Wildcats (Redlands)
    Redlands High School Terriers (Redlands)
    Fontana High School Steelers (Fontana)
Fontana AB Miller High School Rebels (Fontana)
Rialto Eisenhower High School Eagles (Rialto)
    Yucaipa High School Thunderbirds (Yucaipa)

Redlands E Valley humiliates Orange Lutheran last year; check the video OLs coach was speechless. These schools are 4 and 5 thousands in enrollment. Now Give me a break…… what DRL school would have a winning record in C. B. L.?… THINK!…… Let’s go Dons!

  • Anonymous

look er pide, we at Cal dont walk lock in step with every coach because unlike er we love our school. Sure every school has pico people in some way, so!!!!
    Ancich brought us to greatness!

  • Antonio

    Hum, why?

Oh Give Me a Break said:
El Rancho is pretty desparate if they are putting fontana on a pedastal. they have won 8 games in 6 years. give me a break.

    Pretty desparate for what? Hum…….

  • Anonymous

The Ranch is back on the attack and you could just look back.

  • Anonymous

Dons I think Whittier is gonna be a force that maybe everyone is over looking, ok Savage and company are officially gone but this might be their year, talent wise. GO DLR WITH A GREAT SEASON.

  • Anonymous

    who cares SP for life!!!!!!!!!!

  • Cal Hi Condor xxx

huge mouth whatever, Cal people know Ancich was the best coach Cal ever had not even er’s mcwhinney can compare.

  • Cal

Zamora or Ramirez, suck do you understand? Or should i say it again?

  • Wow

Ancich won one playoff game in three years and that was with a division 1 college football runningback that he stole and he is the greatest coach in your school history. Wow thats pretty pathetic for Cal. Arnold is much more succesful then Ancich ever was. Patricio even took Cal to the Semi finals. Cal Hi Condor are you Dusan’s mom?

  • Ancich’s record since 2004

31-33 Not counting his forfeit losses he is still below 500. Lol What a mediocre hero you guys have over there at Cal Hi. He left over three years ago. Nobody at the school that plays on the team even knows who he is. You pathetic parents need to move on with your lives. You should be happy Arnold has brought you guys 2 titles something Ancich never did. Something Ancich has never done as a coach his entire career! Living in Daddy’s shadow.

  • Sphs

    True Don,
I would be bitter as well if I was an alumni of a school that got their a** kicked the last 30 years by sphs. Your school is a joke and will never beat sphs again…And the worst thing about it is sphs is in the worst shape it’s been in since the black hole era of the 80′s. Both schools play football that is irrelevant.

    Erhs=freakin losers=look at your alumni

  • Anonymous

The Los Altos game will be awesome with J. Arellanes, Zamora, and J. Ledesma all ER guys across the field, awesome. In one way or another, a Don will win. GO DONS

  • Bobby Robertson

Wow youre kidding me; Joe Ledesma is also coaching at Los A? He coached with Shelko in the early 90s and crazy man Sweeney a great guy. Well looks to be a good game. Best of luck Dons should bring a lot of the alumni out, perfect.

  • Philip

If anyone is able to attend tonights All Star Game at Baldwin Park High at 7:30 we (Dons) will have in it one of our own in Bryan Turner. Believe SF also has a player in the game as well.

  • B.A Lancers

What, sphs your alumni dont even send their kids to sp, i guess the slime dont want their kids to be slime. And thats for at least 10 years now; they send them to Amat or anywhere else. Whats sp enrollment now maybe 600. Wheres your alumni, look at them. sphs=freakin losers=look at your alumni

  • SF

Amusement at the circus, is that after a year and a half Mrs Barr wanted out, plus sp had the smallest graduating class in the area and maybe any area, ridiculous, what a fiasco of a so call school.

  • Amat

Oh my goodness, the sp slime did not have a player in the West vs. East game tonight. Slime do you remember Darien Johnson, Davis Cazares or Daniel Kane, you know the ones that embarrassed your school so bad,,, that sp and coaches dont want to play us. They played tonight and played well.

  • ex Cal parent under Ansish

This year will tel about Cal, no more Ansishes players around, we will see what Arnol developt. i think he had god timin.

wasnt this an el rancho blog??? morons

  • a

its a whittier daily news blog. moron. the topic of this question is el rancho. but if you know how the conversation went. It started out with cal hi people calling out coaches they had or have with el rancho ties. And Ancich spews ooze on too many of these blogs. Because his relatives keep blogging on here.

  • Anonymous

Great spring practice, get your rest this dead period Dons. Summer workouts will be different this year

  • Hombre Bestia

Week 9 is going to be a good one with Santa Fe, that may determine a one or two seed in the playoffs.

  • Ex Cal Parent

Ancichs record is not just abuot wins and losses. He has almost reversed the win record of the school in two years with an 8 and 3 record this year. They never won before he took over.

He had the guts to take over a terrible program and made the playoffs in the second year. At Cerritos he made the playoffs taking over another terrible program.

  • Wow

    Ex Cal Parent:

Ancich did not take over a terrible program. 3 years before he got there Patricio took them to a league Championship and a semi-finals apperance and they lost 28-27 to a Los Altos team that was ranked 4th in the state by California High School Sports magazine. (Ancich never won a league title.) How is that terrible? The year before that Foster led them to a 9-1 regular season record. The year before Ancich got there they were 4-1 and took second in league. (equal to the best that Ancich ever finished.) Ancich’s first year they went 0-5 in league the worst finish in over a decade for the school. Ancich made the playoffs 2 out of three years and won one playoff game. Thats no big deal. How was the program terrible before he got there though? Patricio’s teams went to the playoffs 3 out of the four years he was there. Fosters teams teams made the playoffs his last 5 years there. YOU KNOW NOTHING OF CAL HI FOOTBALL HISTORY. And if it isn’t about wins and losses all the more reason people shouldn’t like him. He got ran out for moral and ethical reason not wins and losses. How is it that you idiots give him all the credit for last season when he never even personnally coached any kid on the team. They were freshman. Yet Arnold gets no credit and he had them for three straight seasons. How does that make them Anchich’s kids? Doesn’t make sense? CAL HI HAS DONE NOTHING BUT GOT BETTER SINCE THAT LOSER WAS RAN OUT OF TOWN. Including whooping his butt head to head over at Villa Park.

  • El Rancho

We at the Ranch know Coach Arnold well and encompass immense respect for him and Cal is lucky to have him as coach, and we know Patricio as well. Do not know Ancich but he does come from a football family…… Come on dead period please end quickly. lol

  • Anonymous

Hey Campa just asking, whats up with the linebacker from El Rancho (Tate Harshbarger) who with another ER student headed to Yale this August? Would it be achievable for a write up on the young man?

  • come on campa

    1966 Football Team Reunion
    4/10/10
El Rancho’s 1960s football teams are well known to Pico Rivera historians. From 1956-1968, Coach Ernie Johnson lead the Dons to an astounding number of victories. During his tenure as coach, his teams won 9 league championships, 3 CIF championships, and two CIF Runner-Ups Arguably, the biggest season of them all was in 1966, when the Varsity Dons were declared “National High School Football Champions.” On April 10, 2010, the players and coaches from that 1966 team held a reunion in the ERHS gym. They came together for a few hours to get caught up on each others’ lives, and to reminisce about that one amazing season.

  • AMAT 73

I remember some pretty good El Rancho teams from the 70′s also . We played them a couple of times in CIF playoffs. I remember betting my Aunt on the games as she lived right down the street from ER on Homebrook ? and was a fans due to the neiborhood kids being on the team. Always big and diciplined back then . Good to see the program headed in the right direction.

  • Don

Thank you Amat 73, its kind of nice to hear a that a boy every now and then. Im not against a verbal spat now and then, but not every post………. Understand Jay Amats back, is only playing baseball. Good luck this season and I mean it.

  • Ex Cal Parent

Wow I am not talking about when he took over at Cal, I am talking abuot when he took over at Villa Park.

Patricio is a heck of a coach. And Cal did well for years.

Misunderstanding. Maybe I wasnt clear. The Villa Park program he took over was miserable.

  • AMAT 73

Don, Unfortunetly he is going to drop football in order to concentrate on baseball and studies. Can’t say anything about that because for a young man to understand his limits and do what he feels best for him is great and shows a lot of character on his part. He is a fine Lancer and I wish him the best. Now as far as replacing him we have a few kids on the rise in Shay and Moore who will fill in nicely . Hopefully we pick up where we left off and have an even a better season this year. I have been coming over here to see what’s going on and also saw West Covina Dan visit . Nice blog not as much drama as the SGV blog but still plenty. What really strikes me funny is the way( I have to do it) the slime is looked at over here. The same things that are said to Campa are said to Fred on our side. That he is an AMAT homer and gives AMAT too much coverage and will protect AMAT and so forth. Maybe it’s the assumptions of recruiting and we have our pick of all players and so forth but it is funny to see the same things written. Good luck to the Dons this year and maybe a CIF run. And thanks for the well wishes.

  • erdons!

Absolutely Amat 73 good luck, Wow in 2008 the Lancers were so close in advancing against Mighty Poly, with Amats #1 Johnson, #4 Anderson, now baseball only, my picks #9 Brent Seals, #20 Deshawn Gaisie just to name a few. Maybe the Lancers are the team to beat this year. Lightning and Thunder was awesome!

  • to cal fans

its funny how u guys talk let the players play and let us do the watching

  • olddon

To my endearing Dons, best of fortune this season, play hard and prepare yourselves. Every season is one to always remember.

If you are calling me out for being a hater please tell me who you are so at least I know who to address this to. Now as for being a hater what make you say I am one? I am an Alumni of the Ranch, a member of the Boosters, and a Parent of a player on the team. So what reason do I have to be hating on my own Team. So if sending many hours in support of a program is deemed “HATING” then I guess you are correct. But please let me know who you are so next time you call me I can address you directly. GO DONS!!!
