Area Rocked by Recent Deaths

It’s tragic when a community has to deal with the death of anyone, youth or adult, before their time.

Over the last month, this small Whittier football community has suffered through three deaths, two in the last week alone. Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers.

The St. Paul community is mourning the death of long-time instructor Lucy Wilson, mother of Anthony Wilson, an alumnus who just began coaching with the football program early this year.

Lucy Wilson taught Spanish at St. Paul for 23 years and influenced many students and staff throughout the years.

Her services are this evening at 7 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church (13935 Telegraph Road) while the funeral mass is on Tuesday at 10 am.

The La Serna family also suffered the loss of one of its own as Ernie Cooper was found dead. The 25-year-old former quarterback stopped breathing and passed away on Thursday.

Here’s a story in the San Luis Obispo Tribune –

Former Cal Poly football player Cooper found dead

The news department is working on a story and I’ve been told that funeral arraignments are still being worked out.

As soon as I get more info, I will pass it along.

Lancers coach Margarito Beltran said he’s been in touch with Ernie’s father, and in lieu of flowers, the Cooper family requests donations be made in care of the La Serna High School Football Club.

The two deaths proceeded the passing of former California football athlete Quinn Luckett about a month ago.

Again, this is the time to reach out to these communities and offer any help possible. Thank you.
